The excuse of insufficient advertisers is, to be polite, inaccurate. The owner, Mr. Weaver, made an extremely half-hearted and unmotivated attempt to sell the station during the summer of 2021. I attempted to purchase it. To say he was unmotivated is to be extremely generous. I won’t list specifics but no one in their right mind would even make an offer. The reality is pretty simple. Mr. Weaver still owns three stations in Wabash county with WARU-FM(licensed to Roann) marketed to Peru. Had he sold WARU-AM the station would have been eligible for the revitalization program and an FM translator. Hence a truly local station with an adequate FM signal to cover the city and competition for him. By simply returning the license he prevented another challenge to local advertisers. Mr. Weaver sold the tower site. A new owner would have had less than 24 months to find adequate acreage for another AM tower and ground system, construct and install one to remain on the air. When asked for a financial statement the broker engaged by Mr. Weaver informed this potential buyer “there wasn’t one.” Motivated to sell or motivated to eliminate competition? You decide.
