WARU Peru

Mondays FCC Daily Digest shows WARU Peru license renewal cancelled:

AM STATION APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSE TO COVER LICENSE CANCELLED
BL-6138 DWARU 71276
1600 KHZ
DREAM WEAVER MARKETING, LLC
PERU, IN

Toured the station as a Cub Scout and got "hooked on radio" from the experience. Sad to see Peru could not support the station.

Went by the WARU-AM site in Peru today. The building was deserted. The AM transmitter was gone, and it appeared that the station may have been off-the-air for some time. Anyone know when was the last day for 1600?

Not the last day but I'm thinking it was fairly recent. Shows deleted as of 9/30/2021.

The building looked abandoned. Coax laying on the ground at the rear of the building, 2 runs, one for AM and the other for the former 98.3 FM antenna which is still on the tower. Didn't think to take a picture.

The AM coax looked as though it had been on the ground for a while. The FM coax clearly showing it age. The FM was moveqd to 98.5 some time ago and is now located in Kokomo. Can't believe the AM was on the air from this location. I think I'll call the station on Monday (they are in Wabash) and see if they have an update on the last AM air-date.

I worked down the road in Logansport in the 80s. I remember them running 2 different A/C formats and a deep voiced guy doing liners for both,

Spoke with the owner of WARU. The last day on 1600 was September 30th. There was insufficient advertiser support for the AM in Peru. WARU-FM continues on 101.9. The station that is licensed to Peru on 98.5 is, for all intents and purposes, a Kokomo station co-located with WIOU.

The excuse of insufficient advertisers is, to be polite, inaccurate. The owner, Mr. Weaver, made an extremely half-hearted and unmotivated attempt to sell the station during the summer of 2021. I attempted to purchase it. To say he was unmotivated is to be extremely generous. I won’t list specifics but no one in their right mind would even make an offer. The reality is pretty simple. Mr. Weaver still owns three stations in Wabash county with WARU-FM(licensed to Roann) marketed to Peru. Had he sold WARU-AM the station would have been eligible for the revitalization program and an FM translator. Hence a truly local station with an adequate FM signal to cover the city and competition for him. By simply returning the license he prevented another challenge to local advertisers. Mr. Weaver sold the tower site. A new owner would have had less than 24 months to find adequate acreage for another AM tower and ground system, construct and install one to remain on the air. When asked for a financial statement the broker engaged by Mr. Weaver informed this potential buyer “there wasn’t one.” Motivated to sell or motivated to eliminate competition? You decide.

If an AM station didn't get a translator during the windows, it can't just apply for a new one now. The last window closed in 2018, and my recollection is that WARU didn't apply for one.
