Little Ed,
From the mid 70's to about 90 KITY had about 3 good runs. First was When Clifton took it over and turned it Disco then dance/urban circa 1979. (929) It had a 8.9 #1 in the city. KITY also gave KTFM a run for the money shortly in 82/83. I left mornings at KTFM to program KITY and was also doing mornings and increased the ratings 2.9 to a 5.7. KTFM was down to a 6.8 then. Then Brian White and Rick Upton had it going for awhile in the mid/late 80's. KITY DID have a very short go when it went country briefly but never had the ratings when Clifton had it in 79.
KITY fell apart in 80 when Clifton left and came to KTFM. He along with Mike Scott/Dan Mason hired me for nights, then one book later i went to mornings and that's when we beat KITY 8.9 to KITY's 3.0 KZ-100 was also on the air as a chr. They got a 3.5 share i believe. I worked with John Steele at KITY fow awhile and he was a great pd that brought up kity's numbers too.
For a brief time Lee Randall got KTSA back up to the top in late 80 but it floundered after that. Sonny Rio was smokin on KTSA! Also Steamer now with Mix in Dallas did a great job at KITY in 80.
As for KONO, the best it sounded in my humble opinion was when Bill Thorman had it in the late 70's. He knew them beaner records!
BTW..Steve Sellers sounds GREAT on KONO these days! Lot's of Energy!
As a side note...in late 82 KLLS CLASS FM programmed by Harry Nelson had i think one of the best Hot AC stations i ever heard. Sounded much like KVIL. Of course it was consulted by George Johns and had many a former KVIL jock on it including Bill Gardner and Jim Edwards (Bruce buchannan)
