WASK is no Jack!!!

I was traveling South of Lafayette on I65 one afternoon last week when I tuned to WASK 98.7. I noticed many changes and I must say none for the better. I really don't care for a moldy oldies station trying to pass themselves off as a classic hits station. WASK was all over the place even playing "Sugar Oh Honey Honey" how can any classic hit DJ sit still in his chair and play that garbage. I had to pull over and upchuck!!! How disgusting!!! Who is to blame??? Did management pay the consultant already? If so cancel the check :p!!!!

"one afternoon last week when I tuned to WASK 98.7." "WASK was all over the place even playing "Sugar Oh Honey Honey" how can any classic hit DJ sit still in his chair and play that garbage."

How bout this, call me sometime or send an email to me [email protected]
I would be glad to answer any question you may have about sitting still or virtually anything else, how bout that? People helpin' people that's what it's all about.

I think you answered your own question, Indy.

WASK is going through some MAJOR growing pains right now.
Initially they were still using the "Super Hits of the 60's and 70's" verbage although playing the occasional 80's tune.

Now it's more 80's tunes but you can still hear the "60's and 70's" liner slip through.

If you haven't listened for awhile and still think of WASK as an "oldie moldie", then I can understand your concern.

I think once they work the kinks out, it will have that lovely "Super Hits" feel and not be all over the place so much.

Your opinion of the music is a personal thing. Personally, if I hear "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" on WASK one more time, I'll drive my car into the Wabash.
But arguing taste in music and "how a jock can play that garbage" is irrelevant if one still has a cassette deck, CD player, iPod, or tuning knob to find something else. Plus, the jock plays what they are supposed to play or they get fired.

Come on guys! There are some songs that did not pass the test of time.
The 12 year old girls who loved the Archies- Sugar Sugar and numerous
Little Donny Osmond tunes are now 50 years old and want Elton John.
It's simple, don't be a DORK. Go delete it.
I will fire you if you play the Archies here.

Hey unplugged,
WOW, I agree, even though I'm"EVERYTHING YOU HATE about radio."

Give WASK some time. BTW "You Lost" is a song that tests nearly off the chart for a few age groups (kinda like music by the group "Chicago").

Yup...people helpin' people.

I disagree with you totally on that one, Dog.

You should play a (super) hit from the 60's like the Archies, but not 10 times a week or right after the Eagles.
You can't call yourself a "Super Hits" station like WASK and not play "Sugar Sugar". That's what's simple.

50-year-old women listen to oldies stations so they can hear music from when they were 12 years old.
Or are you trying to win over and be relevant to the 18-24 demo with your oldies?

WASK is huge Women 35-64. Are you going to be the one to tell the sales dept. not to go out and sell that demo for an oldies station?
YOU'LL get fired, not your jocks.
If I was the owner of a mainstream oldies radio station and heard you deleted "Sugar Sugar", one of the biggest songs of the 60's, I'd assume you were clueless or were trying to inject too much of your own musical taste.

The songs pass the test of time if they are rotated right and texture-wise aren't buttressed up against a song it won't flow with.

I'm realistic enough to realize that since I'm such a big music fan, I'll be hitting the button about every other song anyway or pop in a cassette/CD because I'm sick of most of it, but also smart enough to know that radio stations (especially oldies stations) are NOT trying to reach folks like me.

The majority of (stupid) listeners aren't sick of anything like me!

(Average stupid) Listeners still request "Free Bird" and "Stairway".

Yup.

See my last post about songs like "You Lost". I'm more than aware it was a hit.
And the (stupid status quo lovin') people who aren't sick of it are the ones WASK is trying to please, not me.

:-*

Sorry, but I have managed several oldies stations. Some in medium, some in large
markets. I did not play Sugar Sugar or the Osmonds. Yes, they were super hits.
But most of those who loved them then, do not love them now.
I promise I did not delete the Beatles, Beach Boys, or CCR.

My new motto on here to suck all the bile and venom out of posts is: "Show me facts".

"Most do not love them now" is a broad vague stroke.

Research? Ratings? Evidence?

And "I've managed several oldies stations" either means you started low and now you're in a major market (congratulations) with programming decisions like these, or you're a capable programmer now in a small market (they got rid of you in the large markets).
Another random tidbit we can't really know about because of the anonymity of the posts/user names. I'm not even saying I want to know, but be prepared to get grilled when you throw that one out.

As I said, you either took it upon yourself to assign popularity of the songs based on your own musical taste, don't use a consultant to research the relevance of certain oldies, or don't own a copy of "Billboard's All-Time Top 40 Hits".

Who had more #1 Top 40 "HITS"? CCR, the Archies, Beach Boys, or the Osmonds?
You can't argue with objective over the subjective, right?

I have worked for large companies. You bet we paid for research. And we followed the
advice we received. My point is, some songs were super hits, they didn't stand the test
of time. For example, Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones were putting out huge hits at the same
time as the Archies. But, oldies stations rarely play them
Don't you remember what a mixture top 40 radio really was back then.
I'm sure it will work out fine. You work for a great company.

And my point is/was, "didn't stand the test of time" is based on what? Who says?
What advice did they give you about what songs to play?
"Listen here! Absolutely NO ARCHIES! Ya hear me?"
"But why no Archies? We're an oldies station for cryin' out loud!"
"You just follow the great research you paid for and keep your mouth shut!"

I still hear plenty of Tom Jones on oldies stations and Frank is on "American Classics" or whatever because it fits that format.
The Archies won't be found on a country station obviously.

I "work for a great company"? How do YOU know? I may live under a bridge!
Or typing this at the library. I'm tilting my head like a dog hearing a whistle after that one. ???

As I said, I'm not trying to be a choad about it. I just like to know the policy about who decides these things.

Would someone please show me the facts, the research, or the ratings on who wants to hear the Archies on a classic hits radio station!
Fifty year old women? Oh sure fifty year old women are begging to break out with pimples and hear the songs from their teen years. Not any women I know!! Your average stupid listener? Is that who listens to WASK 98.7? I don't believe you think so little of your audience. Who's your consultant? I bet you hired Jughead!!!! He better cash that check fast. Good Luck! ;D

"Would someone please show me the facts, the research, or the ratings on who wants to hear the Archies on a classic hits radio station!"

Dude I have made an offer to you to answer your questions. Not on here though. Call me tomorrow (Friday) or send me a quick email, I've got answers for you.

Someone really got their fur roughed up here.
My mom has that song on an old 45 record.
Not my favorite. But not end of the world
either.

Why does everyone think I work for WASK? Not sure why I've seen that up here a couple times.
I've got their Arbitron numbers, but not a paycheck from them. Please bother to read/re-read the posts.
A waste of good material on me there, Indy. Sorry, bro! :'(

As I said (in previous posts), T-Warp, I could give a dookie what people listen to, but throwing out these broad statements about "nobody likes that song anymore" and "50-year-old women don't listen to oldies stations" is misguided unless you've got some factual evidence that points me elsewhere. ???

If I'm going to roll over and accept that most of the music on the radio (whatever the format) is geared toward (stupid) people who don't want or know any better and the goal of each station is just getting the best ratings, I'm at the very least not going to also roll over on data. :-\

Nobody's even bothered to say, "My consultant did some testing and this is what we found" about oldies music.
If some consultant jumped in here and said, "This particular song tested poorly across the nation. Nobody wants to hear it anymore", I'd say, "Ahhh...facts! Thank you! Next!". But instead...whatever I write gets interpreted as getting my "fur roughed up" or whatever. ???

Sorry, Jones. I'm not looking to start calling people outside these posts.
You've either got some info to share on here or you don't. I know your heart's in the right place and you are eager to help, but it's not going to work here with me dialing up radio stations and grilling their jocks about formats and consultants.
I'll let the listeners who keep calling you to request an Elvis tune from the 50's that you'll never play or from some drunk guy in Dayton requesting "Little Green Bag" keep you busy with phone calls!
You've got your hands full enough with THAT, my brother! ;D

Peace.

Have to agree with Timewarp on this one. So what, WASK palyed Sugar Sugar.
There will be another song they don't like as well.
As a jock I have played songs I hate. Who cares. It's not about what I want
I am a professional dj. I do the job I am paid to do. Isn't that what a pro does?
And as far as Jack, no station in Indiana has really done Jack. I hear the real
Jack in Canada is a mixture of everything unlike 104.5 in Indianapolis.

"I was only following orders". Where have I heard that before? I think at the Nuremberg trials?

I'm kidding, I'm kidding, calm down. A little levity...

::)
