WASK

Recently there was an ad in All Access for a talk host to work at WASK-AM(?) in Lafayette. Having worked there many moons ago, I was curious about the story behind the story. Does this mean the AM is no longer a simulcast with the FM? If so, what's the lineup on AM?

We're searching for a Morning Host for a future opening.

Does that mean that WASK AM is going back to News/Talk?

Ok, who wants to start the pool on how long (or short) the morning host will last!!

Remember, this is AMP in you durations.

Actually, WASK-AM is owned by Schurz Communications, not Artistic Media Partners. WASK/WASK-FM already have a great reputation in Lafayette for news and information. If they place the right mix of local and national news with syndicated talk (Rush, Hannity, etc.) as well as a local morning show with a solid host and cross-promote the crap out of the station, I'm sure they'd do great in the ratings. Schurz has the ability to do what needs to be done to get enough of a buzz going if WASK(AM) flips.

You raise a good point about Artistic Media Partners, though. I wonder if AMP will place a format on WLAS if WASK breaks their longstanding simulcast with WASK-FM. Given the fact that WLAS carries all broadcasted Purdue sports, it would be the perfect place for an all sports station.

It looks like things may have the potential of getting bit interesting in Lafayette radio this year.

Strap in, kids!

They tried that about 10 years ago and struggled along for a couple of years with low ratings before they switched to Oldies. I doubt the AM alone would generate any better ratings than the simulcast of Talk on both AM & FM. It'll be interesting to see what happens. However, if I were the morning host on either WASK or WKOA, I'd make sure my package was updated after seeing the ad...
______________

Hey Jim, I wondered if that was you!

I always enjoyed listening to you on WASK. I thought it was kind of low-budget how Keith left you and Pratt to swing when he resigned.

I know it wont mean much now, but I was privvy to the format change and spent a month agonizing over whether to tell you or not. It was quite the dilemma. Do I tell the guy he's about to get the ax and risk my own future, or keep quiet and let the inevitable happen?

I hope you wont hold it against me.
______________

seeing as how the AM host on WKOA is the Ops Mgr putting the ad in, I wouldn't be all that worried...

Whoever this person is they sure don't know Schurz.

And BTW, the talk 10 years ago was on a simulcast. 2 signals, one format.

You're going to be hearing some different things on 1450AM in the next few months and it won't be Oldies. Stay tuned.

Yes. I believe thats what I said.

And trust me, I know Schurz a lot better than you think I do. And Duchesois, (sp?) who owned the station before Schurz, and all the way back to the days of Harry Bradway, Jerry Collins & Earl Richardson.

WASK isn't owned by AMP

Thank you - for the record, I've *never* blamed Keith for what happened, or Hal Youart for that matter. It was, as I saw it, corporate-level BS...

I'll second that.

Mark, I'm looking forward to hearing the new product that you're putting on 1450. I wish you guys the best of luck with it. :)

They really faired well back when they were news/talk. Probably the amount of stations that had signed on back in the 90s had an impact on how news/talk's numbers were interpreted. Lafayette had only 10 radio stations in 1990 and 15 by the end of 1994 plus a hand-full of format changes by existing stations. In a more competitive environment, shares are going to lower somewhat overall as the total audience spreads itself out.

I'd speculate that the cost of operating WASK was the real reason why the station flipped to oldies in the first place. WASK seemed to have a much larger news operation as a news/talk, which of course, can get very expensive to operate (They also had a local morning and afternoon drive show, no?). Add that to the cost of running programs like Rush and Tom Lykis as well as a lower cost per point due to the competition, and you may have yourself a station struggling to stay in the black.

As someone that grew up in lafayette during the hayday of WASK 1450. Talk show like Public Opion. and many others I do miss that kind of show and would love to see something like that back on. I rember when they moved to the nerw studio and it was out in the "middle of no where ". Listing to them during the Blizzard of 76 and still tell people I know if you want to hear it right turn to WASK. I still have family and businee dealing in Lafayette and I had to pick up some stuff from a companty and ask them are you east or west from WASK. lolol

I would say that WASK AM might break for AM daypart....fill it up with whatnot and go back to simulcast to fill the day...WASK AM has a lot of money to be made if they would break the simulcast to do HS sports and whatnot

I beg to differ...I would say YOU don't know Shurz. The person you are referring to spent YEARS at WASK.
