WAVE Goodbye

Because Fresh in NYC is doing so well? Welcome to bland radio!

Fresh is just a name; the actual format, use of jocks, music list and focus, is different in each of the few markets the name is being used in. An LA Fresh might be radically different from the currently existing Easter ones.

In any case, we have to remember that each company has a repertoire of very few names it can use for stations so we will be seeing more and more cases of very different formats with the same name across the country due to service mark limitations caused by the Internet making every station have a presence in every city and state!

Do you think the execs in the Clear Channel building will regret firing the open shot by sending KYSR after KROQ?
KBIG was a disaster in its Rhythmic Gold AC days, and by basically switching KYSR's format to KBIG and creating a new Alternative format on KYSR, saved the CC cluster. How would CC regret that?
CC doesn't give a s*** about 98.7, it's showing that with CC NOT flipping it, with it being in 21st place...CC literally has no idea what they could put on that frequency. Maybe they should actually create an FM station targeted towards males...Sports Talk, FM Talk, or just even take all those female-friendly artists out of their playlist and attach some balls to it...

KYSR is not designed to be a 1st place station... at least in a market like LA. It's doing what it was intended to: better ratings than Star and holding down KROQ. Nothing bad about that.

yea...like an actual Rock/Active Rock station, not a pop sounding Alternative station.

bummer, it would have been nice to have had a well programmed AC back in the market. smooth jazz is a dog with fleas, they should still ditch it and put on something that can make them some money

The issue here is they are not changing because they are MAKING MONEY.

I would think that ALL stations in SoCal would love to be in first place (even KJLH)...the problem is, it's not holding down KROQ. Why would any station who flipped formats just immediately have to have the urge to be in competion with a station that doesn't exist?

You already have one.

hi bryan, huge long term fan of your work -- both at kost and kbig for all these years. kost was great back in the days when jk was programming, and of course great air talent like kim, ted, mike... there are others... now its just another run into the ground station like all of the clear channel properties. hopefully jhani can put some class back in AC and do it up right on 94.7 -- you, of course, should head on over too!! you are after all part of what makes AC radio great... and i think 94.7 would be a great place to make a fresh start!!

If I died and went to heaven ... we would have Mark and Kim - Bryan Simmons - Mike Saklaredes, Ken Nolan all on 94.7....

If there is a heaven ....

Informed people who have access to revenue reports for LA Radio see strong billing for The Wave - - is it down, yup - but who isn't. But the kind of #s KTWV is posting and what it costs for them to run that station will absolutely not result in a format change. I'd bet anyone 5K that it won't happen. Let's go Baylor if you want to put your money where your mouth is give me your email and we'll put this bet in writing.

I appreciate how you feel hdsucks and thank you for your nice words about me. Lets just say that our opinions differ with regards to my longtime home. We have a wonderful staff and they all work very hard to keep KOST in the upper echelon of AC radio stations in the nation. I have great respect for my former program director and the work he has done since moving across town, but again we part on our opinions of Coast 103's current state and I believe the numbers speak for themselves, especially in the demos that are our target. My current program director takes a back seat to no one and again, our successes reflect that.

To angelbec, thank you for your post. I am beyond flattered.

I am extremely proud of my station and my co-workers and whatever head to head competition comes our way I have complete faith that we can do battle and win the war.

You're probably right about the first point... just that with the composition of the LA market hard to see any rock station making it to the top if the audience is fragmented by two stations. That doesn't mean there's not the niche for them though. As far as the second point, if memory serves me right KROQ used to often be in the top 5 sharewise, not really there anymore. Although KYSR has slid some lately...

The comparison with Star is that 98.7 is doing better than they used to on the Star format... not that they're competing against a station that doesn't exist... they were star!

Bryan,

I still listen to KOST and have been listening since 1984. When they made the changes I took it personally. That shows how much I loved the DJ's. With that being said - I wish no ill will towards the station and the PD. I just wish that they would actually listen to how the listeners feel.

I don't want to see any station or any personality disappear - however it seems that radio is becoming a relic ... and that pains me.

Best of luck to you my dear friend - and I support and respect how you feel!

KNX needs to stay on 1070. Here in San Diego it is the only reliable news source. 94.7 doesnt make it here.

"KNX needs to stay on 1070."

KNX 1070 would not disappear. It would be a simulcast similar to KCBS in SF. But probably not anytime soon.
