WAVO asks for donations to maintain radio format

I just listened to 1280 streaming online with Bad Company playing. Wow..1280's WSAT format has changed. Sounds more like classic hits. I wonder how long they will last. Classic Rock on AM doesnt sound right. Well I guess it's good news for WAVO for 1 more year.

Especially if they consider a WTIX simulcast. I thought Memories 1280 was actually playing the softer side of oldies, but I didn't like hearing those songs anyway. I'm hoping they get lots of complaints about that.

Tomorrow I'll actually get to hear the morning show and see if it's still the same. But I'll be within range of WAVO once I get in the car at lunchtime. I'm looking forward to it.

WAVO did meet its goal for staying on the air by September 30, but (I assume) not for streaming. I listened when I was closer to Charlotte and heard this twice. They raised $500 more than what they needed.

As for the music on WSAT, it's not as bad as all that. It's not something I will listen to, but I happened to turn it on when it became too hard to hear WAVO as I got close to home. Three songs in a row would have been part of the old format, though I didn't like the DJ. Two more songs were borderline. Still, I heard "Cold As Ice" earlier in the day. And "Le Freak" yesterday. Still oldies rather than classic hits, but not ideal. This may not be enough to generate a lot of complaints.

The morning show is still the same. That's good news (for a few people, and mainly in the 8:00 hour) since WAVO has a talk show then. I even heard one big band song. "Jump" by Van Halen. The man who runs the station said it was performed by Paul Anka. But I don't think he was a member of the Four Seasons as the man said.

That's impressive glad WAVO is making a go of it. Faithful Listeners willing to support a radio station with financial contributions might also be a good target for advertisers. Okay I know they're all over 50 but I just had to say it....So flame on, you know you want to. :)

Heard a rumor yesterday that the fellow that bought WSAT and WSTP in Salisbury is in the process of buying 1410 in Concord. Still think they made a mistake changing the calls from WEGO but it is what it is...

I am guessing GHB is slowly being sold away. Wonder how long they hold onto WAVO?

They had to put the WTIX letters somewhere. Those are legendary if you live in New Orleans.

I would have hoped the plan for WTIX is something like America's Best Music. I did contact WAVO and tell them a simulcast of WAVO on WTIX would be a good thing now. However, if they sell WTIX that doesn't seem likely. And it was WSAT that was committed to this kind of music. That's obviously not the case now.

The person that told me about the possible sale also told me that they had 1410 on one of their vehicles. At first I thought he may have gotten confused since they also own 1490. It is official now anyways. They filed an application with the FCC to buy the station.

Station IDs confirm this has happened. Not the sale, but the simulcast.

I'm happy to say WAVO did run a commercial yesterday (at least I hope it was). Something about cholesterol. Sounded national.

I must agree with Mike's observation. I think a potential business (as in not an ad agency buy) would be impressed with listeners contributing to the station. Public radio can enjoy the use of "our listeners are so loyal to our station they contribute financially. By being on our station you not only get your message out there but you reap the benefits of that loyalty as well". It almost puts you at the friend level bound by a love of the station, not just as random business asking for listeners to patronize them. Yes I know the difference between Underwriting and the Commercial but the business owner only tosses out dollars to increase their business and it doesn't matter the name, it's all marketing to them.

And it's that time of year again. And once again we are reminded we are over 55 and advertisers don't like us.

Though I was enjoying this music when I was 35. And younger.

While I didn't hear a request for money yesterday, when they went to news at 11:00 there was silence. The music started up again at its usual time.

The news was back later in the day.

And as of the date of the recording I heard on Tuesday, they're halfway to their goal, which must be met by August 31.

Is this good news?

That's what the man was talking about. I couldn't hear clearly. That's not a signal problem, but just the poor receiver in my car.
And all I needed was to be closer to Charlotte (which, by definition, is closer to Rock Hill). I heard the words loud and clear.

The recording has been on the air for several weeks, but the man said photos were on their web site. Well, I just checked and didn't see any.

VChimpanzee,

If you go to 1150WAVO.com, you should see some pictures of fried xmtr parts.

Tom Gentry is the GM who made the announcement & does do some spots.

I love the station, but a couple of weeks is more than enough time to announce that they had a lightning strike, coupled with their music licensing fees fund drive.

Time to move on.
