Saw this on indianaairwaves.net...Rumor mill sez: At WAZY-Scotty Blades in morning drive will be paired on Monday with a former New York City broadcasting alum. A new Program Director is on the way to handle ride home as well. He is inbound from Lexington Kentucky where he was a former Clear Channel programmer. Could it be JC from WLKT ?? He starts in February ???

Clear Channel's Lexington stations are programmed very well and have been for a number of years. Whoever it is, I wish them all the best!

Always my first question:

If you were so great in a market like New York City or Kentucky, what the HECK are you doing in Lafayette, Indiana?

Did somebody discover oil in the back yard on 18th? How are they going to pay this "top dollar" talent?

Come to think of it, there's almost nobody left in the building to fire to make up the revenue. Hmmm...

Not sure if he ever worked in New York (possibly back in the day), but maybe they're gonna throw Fred Stuart back on WAZY. I wouldn't put anything past Artistic.

I could very well be wrong, but I believe Lafayette might be the largest market Freds worked. I know he was in Kokomo before coming to Lafayette.

Fred's got a full plate over there and a top sales guy.

They are going to pull him off the street to either be on the air or voice track? I doubt it.
I don't think he minds being put upon for so much, but making him also responsible for an air shift might be the last straw for even HIM.

Just wondering out loud.

Fred rocks. Always a yeoman's job in whatever he's called to do. Perhaps the one guy in Lafayette that could give Vizza a true challenge in afternoon drive.

Just a thought here...but are we sure its someone from New York or just someone who once worked for a major market?

Remember...Dan McKay has been in exile at WIBN in Oxford for quite some time, and I guarantee you that he'd love to be back on in Lafayette. Dan worked in Los Angeles and a 24/7 network format before making his way to Lafayette.

I'm not disputing how great a guy Fred is.

I just feel that if he sees himself becoming another Steve Clark (for the most part, making sure all 4 stations are running, plus production, plus an afternoon airshift, plus appearances), he might say enough is enough.
Fred's busy enough trying to make AMP money as their most seasoned sales rep. Are they going to take him off of that quest? Huh-uh.

A big NO on the challenge to Vizza as well. There would have to be some sort of guarantee that after years away from the mic, Fred could step right in and do a quality airshift and know where all the buttons are. Great production pipes doesn't mean you can keep anybody tuned in.
Bob's not doing anything spectacular except just being Bob Vizza, but people know the brand name and AMP is not into promoting it's local talent. Well, if you call the very rare liner touting "Steve Clark afternoons" promoting talent...

Good point, Apollo. People buying into the "I worked in a major market" part of the interview is a mistake.
Why aren't you still there? Maybe you stunk even parttime no matter how big the market was?
I'd pick the guy who's had a solid gig down the road in Indy for a few years and doesn't want to be "handled" anymore and wants to move UP to a SMALLER market instead of the schlub who's resume looks like something off Mapquest because he couldn't stay put for more than 6 months.

Once I was told major market talent that goes to small markets never does so because they want to. It's always because they couldn't cut it! While that may be a little too broad of a statement, I can honestly say every small market experience I've had with major market talent was not positive. I immediately think of the morning host from Detroit who only stayed two months and successfully pissed off everybody in the building during his first week and the former Houston and Nashville PD who did such a stellar job his country station was blown up less than two months after his arrival and six weeks after he relaunched it! Unforunately, he was shuffled around within the cluster after that. So, he was able to gut the news department at the AM talk station and wreck the FM AC before his 18 month reign of terror was finally put to an end!

Good point buddy. Fred had moved into sales right before my all too brief fall of '98 stint on South 18th. (Has anyone other than Fred or Steve not had an all too brief stint with AMP?) It's been a good three years since Fred and I last talked, but I've never heard regrets about sales. When I was working opposite Fred on GLM, I'd always found him to be a good on-air guy and a strong competitor. Just sayin' - that's all. :)
