WBAL Drops Limbaugh

WBAL is dropping syndicated Rush for all local programming, with more traffic and local news.

http://www.wbal.com/shows/schedulechange.asp

Probably a good move for them, but they still start Sports too early at night. At 6PM people are still looking for news and traffic. Unless there's an Orioles game on, the afternoon show should go till 7 or 8.

Will this stop the ratings fall at WBAL ?

The following is my post on this board from January>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Mighty 1090 is losing ground.....Now x.x from x.x a year ago.

Did anyone at the station consider that its policical tone is responsible for the ratings erosion. Some of the staffers are down right nasty to anyone who disagrees. My God! If you are a Democrat...beware. I did not realize that Liberal was such a dirty word!

And how are they correcting the slippage......well its now traffic on the 5's.

Right.....that will take care of the ratings problem.

Stayed Tuned. _______________________________________________________

Now we are in March and WBAL has shown Rush the door.............

WBAL may be giving the listeners more local information features ( of course

the very creative and innovate traffic on the fives!!!!!!...who got the raise

for thinking of that one at BAL).......BUT this dumping of Rush has more

to do with modifying the political stance of the station............and

therefore stopping the ratings slide...............

Go to DCRTV for more on Rush.........................

Another Shoe To Drop??

Except for the fact that (at least in 12-plus, as reported on the Radio And Records.com website) Clear Channel's two FM stations in Baltimore are doing well, I was beginning to think that CC would flip one of them to talk (like they did to a smooth jazz station in Minneapolis/St. Paul) to pick-up Rush and other Premiere Networks talk shows.

Or could CC still flip the lower-rated of the two (Smooth Jazz WSMJ) to talk and build the format with Rush, et. al.??

One advantage for Clear Channel launching an FM talker in Baltimore around June 1st would be that they'd have Rush right off the bat, and perhaps other Premiere shows, too.

That is exactly what happened in Pittsburgh, sending KDKA on a slow slide into the abyss

I'd take that slide any day. Regularly #1 or #2? A constant 9+ share in a major metro? I'd love to fail like that.

WPGB, the Pitt Rush affiliate finishes with half of that despite having an FM signal.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Poppinjay on 03/16/06 02:07 PM.</FONT></P>

Rush to WCBM? Well, there may still be some hard feelings over Premiere dropping them for WBAL several years ago. ABC Radio has been working on several "back up" programs in case of the loss of Rush from their stations, they include Mark Davis from WBAP in Dallas. Davis up on the ABC Talk channel, and would be a good choice if Premiere drops the bomb in ABC markets. Clear Channel requires each of their station to give one minute per hour to national sales, and I've always believed having Premiere programming on none Clear Channel stations just gives them more to sell nationally, but that may be changing. In Wilmington, after Clear Channel bought WILM, they pulled Rush back from WDEL. Rush was on WILM before moving to WDEL.

I agreed.

Why does all new talk have to be on FM?

First off, I think it's largely recognized that CC will not flip an FM. WCBM is a distant second to WBAL, but not much worse off than CC's WKRC/Cincy, KPRC/Houston, et al that serve as second string synditalkers. If they made a few changes, 680 could be even better off.

Having no inside info in the Baltimore market, it seems CC could just as easily buy the two-station cluster from Mr. Mangione. The standards station could flip to Fox Sports if they so desired, or to libtalk, although that ship seems to have sailed with CC. Or, WCBM or WITH [containing laughter] could pick Rush up. I don't see this FM talk strategy being a huge thing for now in markets where there are perfectly good (and in this case weakly run) AMs to go to (WCBM, 50k/20k).

I met their News Director once, who told me that KD's greatest problem was that they lose 10 listeners a day to the Obituary Column. He seemed to say that with the conviction of market research data behind him. It's true! Half of that share is from people over 70 who set their radio dials to KD in the 1950's, where they have frozen in place. The only people under 40 who can even find it are baseball fans, and that deal comes to an end in a year. That share is about to start dropping like the Thunderbolt at Kennywood Park!
