WBAP-820 AM Stereo?

Happened to tune to 820 with an AM Stereo radio today. The Stereo light is on! Had not seen that since before they tried IBOC HD. Had to double-check with a second radio. Yep it too is indicating stereo. Have they reverted back to the '80s?

If they have, it would seem like a foolish expenditure to me. On the other hand, last I heard, AM Stereo still works for All News, All the Time, WINS 1010 On Your AM Dial...

I'm no engineer, but one once told me that converting to stereo broadcast is actually simple to do and relatively inexpensive. Still, why? How many listeners surf AM radio for stereophonic quality?

This is interesting - I'll have to dust off an AM stereo radio and see how they are doing in Houston. I've noticed no loss in the signal in the last few days, they are still very strong and almost like a local in NW Houston.

They may be leveraging the fact that most HD radios can decode C-Quam - they get stereo without losing coverage.

Hooked up my oscilloscope to L and R out of my Sony SRF-A100 radio, 'scope set to X-Y Lissajous pattern. Sure enough... stereo! The intro into the local traffic report shows lots of separation and difference between the channels.

My Sangean HDT-1X indicates AM Stereo, but the audio that comes out is not what I would call even medium-fidelity. Pretty bad actually.

I recall talking to an engineer at WBAP when they were going HD a few years ago. He said the Stereo C-QUAM and HD were not compatible and could not be transmitted simultaneously.

Stereo now off. That didn't last long.

Well, we are talking about a Cumulus station here. Some executive in Atlanta probably saw the number 2 posting in this thread by jfrancispastirchak which suggested that it involved at least some, albeit small, expense. Can't have that - so they probably ordered the plug to be pulled and forced the engineer to consent to having the cost of his little experiment deducted from his paycheck.

Probably just as well. For a brief time today I was actually listening intensely to the local intros, outros, commercials, for the stereo effect and audio quality, wasting my time.

I would guess they were running a back up rig, I used to have the old stereo gear in the back up audio processing chain just for lack of time to remove it.

Yep maybe they were tuning up their exciter, or exciting their tuner, or .... ???

Back to KGVL AM Stereo 1400 and Hue Beavers show for my AM Stereo fix!

I am in Houston so I could not hear it. However if you listeners in the Dallas area called the station to complain about it being off, they may bring it back if they see there is an interest in it.

There was indeed home tuners for sale.
There still are!

What brands and model models do I have to search for?, because when I type it in on Ebay, I get standard AM Mono, FM Stereo tuners.

Keep an eye on on eBay for Radio Shack TM-152. Also for walkmans Sony SRF-A1 and SRF-42.

SRF-A1 is on eBay right now for $60: 120939905808

There were many models other than these available at the time:

Of course many of the HD radios are capable of receiving AM stereo, and I wonder if it was by design, as an emergency fall back plan if HD-AM had problems.

Is KONO in AM Stereo?

I know then KSJL 76 AM was, and then KKBQ 79 AM was.

Is there a list somewhere of AM stereo stations and their status today?

Seems fairly up to date. KONO not listed. Only 2 in Texas.

Sorry I didn't get back to the poster asking about KONO - KONO is a very difficult station to get in Houston, due to severe interference from 1st adjacent KEYH. KEYH is not a good neighbor, it slops its sidebands all over KONO. So I had great difficulty verifying that they are NOT in C-Quam.

I should point out - C-Quam AM tuners are still in great demand, even if there are no AM stereo stations in the vicinity. The reason is that they sound incredibly good because they use product detection instead of envelope detection. So long after the last C-Quam station turns off the encoder, AM stereo radios will still be highly prized for their excellent mono sound.

I hear the same bad quality fidelity on my Radio Shack Accurian HD Tabletop when WBAP 820 broadcasts in HD. How embarrassing for the landmark station ! ! :(

WBAP hasnt Run HD in a long time.
