WBCN & The Marshfield Fair

I hear WBCN wrecked their van in the demolition derby at the Marshfield Fair on Friday. That has got to be one of the best promotional stunts since dropping turkeys out of a helicopter!

They are going to teach BCN a lesson by having 30% less dead air between songs this weekend. :D

WATD is a far superior station to BCN, dead air or not.

Ed Perry is a radio legend

If I was to come out of retirement, I'd work for Ed before I set foot near BCN

WBCN's original PD as a rock station ('68-'73) Sam Kopper is now doing a show on WATD Sundays from 12:15 PM (after the noon news) to 3 PM!

Please; ATD is a hobby station and one that won't be around for much longer if they keep doing things like playing The Stone's Sweet Virginia, unedited, like they did a couple of weeks ago. Legend or not, just one of the new FCC fines would crush Perry, and none of his 'Aww shucks, I'm just a simple farmer' rap will hold much water with them.

Have there been a lot of calls for you to come out of retirement?

I unretired once, and remembered why I got out of radio.

As much as I liked the people I worked with, there are just so many hours in the week, and radio was the lowest paying gig. It actually cost me money to do board op/engineering since I was turning down double time overtime shifts at the day gig to do my scheduled radio shifts.

Weekends are for flying, motorcycles, spending time with friends....

And Ed Perry is still a better man than anyone at CBS

Ed 'Let's do lunch' Perry? I think not. Mark Hannon has run two stations down the tubes, Ed Perry has only do it to one. That makes Hannon twice the man Ed Perry is, in my book :D

WATD is more than a hobby station. It serves a local community. But, you are right about violations and fines. WATD streams on the web, and I've heard certain hosts do shows in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The DMCA states that any broadcast station which also streams on the web can not play more than four tracks by the same artist or group within a three hour period. I've heard certain shows on WATD flagrantly (or ignorantly) grossly exceed that. I don't know what the fines are for that, but I'd bet they're as steep as all the others.

I hope they wise up, because, even with all their faults, they are still good to listen to at times.

Well back to the topic....
WBCN has a history of destroying vans. They dropped "Wiked Yellow" from a crane and then dropped a huge block on it with live with mic's inside. They actually used to drop all sorts of things from cranes untill it was just to hard to get permits or permisson to do it anymore.

Wow, that was riveting. Thanks for getting back on topic. There were a few van drivers back in the day that should have been dropped from a crane too. Tom Landry comes to mind.

For once I actually agree with LucyLu…there is NO excuse for dead air on radio. If you always keep something cued up as a backup, it will never happen. WATD does have somewhat of an excuse though. They have something a lot of other stations don’t seem to have any more…Freedom. There are no play lists at WATD…the jocks can pretty much play what they want when they want, as long as it fits the WEL format. Every once in a while though, the computer, cd, 45 or LP will skip and cause a few seconds of dead air.

the WEL format is an inside joke at WATD

It stands for WHAT ED LIKES

and heaven forbid you play something he doesn't like because you'll be hearing about it and soon.
