WBCN's Farewell

Just so you know, I've recorded everything since Friday (yes I know I'm crazy) so if anyone wants anything from the last days of BCN, let me know.
Wow, I would love to have a clip of the duke of madness's bits that adam 12 played.

That "fake static" you were hearing is most likely an STL (studio transmitter link) receiver tuned to the frequency that was being transmitted from the WBCN studios. They probably shut off the STL, which caused the static to be re-broadcast on 104.1. I am assuming an engineer will go to the Pru to flip it over to the STL frequency coming from the Mix studio by around 2am.
This is just my guess by the way :)

There's probably not too many major market stations using analog STLs after the WBAB incident a few years ago. The static was a recorded loop. It was clear to see with the waveform on cool edit.

Going to static after Pink Floyd, the last BCN ID, and the time montage was class. At the end ,BCN had the soul that it had in the old days. Almost all radio has No Soul any more. Maybe college radio and perhaps MVY and XRV can say the have some "soul"

Here's a link to download the final 4 hours of WBCN, saved at 128K to fit under sendspace.com's 300 meg limit. I've got just about everything from the last 4 days saved as 192K MP3s, but the files are too big to post online anywhere, as far as I know.

No thanks! I have the last hour and a half of WBCN from last night. I recorded it on my 90 minute cassette right up until the last moments of WBCN until the first 5 minutes of static played at the end. This was when I was still in bed with my iPod Touch running when I was trying to record the relaunch of "Mix 104.1" at 2 AM on another tape, the stream on my AOL Radio app was dead due to some issues. Sadly, I don't have an aircheck of the relaunch of WBMX's "Mix 104.1". Sorry! I only recorded the first day of "Mix 104.1" today when I got home from work. I will get it post it later this week including the final 90 minutes of WBCN in 2 parts, each are 45 minutes long. Stay tuned.

Bradley J did an ID at 12:am over music. A montage of BCN DJ's from 12:03 to 12:05 and ending with an "over and out" to static.

Thanks for mentioning about WBCN's death. Remember when WNEW-FM in New York City played the last song by the Beatles called "The End" from "Abbey Road" until it flipped from rock to hot talk, that was from 1999. And now, 10 years later, WBCN did it again.

I was listening to KMET here in LA when they became "The Wave" in 1987 and they too used "The End."

Is it safe to say WBCN is the last of the original progressive rockers to go?

WXRT in Chicago is still on.. KFOG in SF. CFNY in Toronto. KBCO in Denver still going strong. Not sure if any of these stations go back as far as BCN did though.

Actually, to be fair, if I remember correctly, the WNEW-FM DJ at that time, Ralph Tortora, actually said a few words and then played what appeared to be a one-minute musical montage, including the Kinks as well as the Beatles, and then at 3 PM, it was handed over to Opie & Anthony and "FM Talk @ 102.7". There's got to be a clip of it somewhere, but from what I remember, the way WNEW went out was pretty weak.

WXRT began playing rock in 1972, four years after WBCN. Program Director Norm Winer, who has been with them over 25 years, came from WBCN with a stop along the way at KSAN San Francisco. I remember hearing him as a college student DJ on then 40-watt WBRS Brandeis University in 1967.

KFOG didn't go rock (AAA) until 1982. It was preceded in the Bay Area by KSAN, and the pioneer KMPX. There were also a number of other rock formats on the air in the Bay by 1982, but KFOG has outlasted them all since then.

CFNY slowly morphed from pop and simulcasts of a sister AM to eclectic rock during the mid '70s. It's still rock, modern alternative.

KBCO debuted with rock in 1977, still a successful AAA.

Our own WAAF beats out all of those, it went progressive rock around 1970. I can't offhand think of any others anywhere still currently playing rock that go back farther than that.

Looks like WMMR in Philly goes back to 1968, according to wikipedia.

That looks right to me! I forgot about them. I remember one night back in the early '70s when some "troppo" brought them (and other Philly FM's) up to Boston!

KQRS Minneapolis goes back to 1968 with progressive rock. Today, they are playing much of the same music they did back then as a "classic rock" station. They stopped playing new rock in 1994, when the parent company bought crosstown rival KRXX 93.7 and flipped them from Active Rock\AOR to Modern Rock "The Edge".

WMMS in Cleveland deserves a mention - just checked Wikipedia - they were playing rock in the late 60's, but the format was interrupted a couple of times. They broke David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Rush.

what is the count on cbs rock stations killed so far ???

I think the question should be: What is the ratio of rock stations killed to sports stations created?
