WBNX Fall 2022

Good Dish bombed, and is done at the end of the week all over the country.

Only question is, is the extra hour of Judge Judy a placeholder until the new fall stuff kicks in or is it for keeps?

I'm surprised "Fox 8 News at 11am" isn't on the horizon, or some compromise wherein New Day is extended 30 minutes and they just add 30 minutes onto the beginning of the Noon news. Then again, isn't Labor Day when they usually do the APL telethon? I don't think any major changes would happen until, as you said, the 12th or the 19th.

Don't give them any ideas. They already air enough newscasts the way is.
"Fox 8 -- Your 24 hour Live News Source" (tm).... :D

Sans the Fox programming, in which they could move the newscast to 8.2 while keeping a little corner of it on the main channel also.

Ever notice how Channel 19 insists on preempting Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy for "First Alert Updates" which they swear they are obligated by the FCC to do. Yet come "Big Brother" or "Survivor" they must have permission to become like "Teetotaler's" ???

I think Sunday was one of those times we needed them to be on past 7 P.M. with severe weather...However, nothing but "60 Minutes", etc....

I thought, right after the switch to Fox, channel 8 added "Cleveland's 24-hour newsroom" to their newscast IDs, so you're not entirely wrong with "your 24-hour live news source," haha!

Speaking of, remember when they used to do afternoon traffic reports when they got SkyFox back in the air? Seems to me like that's a missed opportunity for having SkyFox.

All I remember was the "Fox is eight and eight is news" promotion that was so "Well received". I do remember both WEWS and WJW hawking an "At the top of the hour" 24 news brief which was usually like "Lake Erie holds water" or "Indians (Can I still say that?) show signs of improving. (*)". The "briefs" seemed to have started even in the early 1990's.

(*) Later to be disclosed as, possibly brighter colors on Slider to make him more visible, or the return of stadium mustard.

Kind of off topic, but does anybody remember more exact years of stations going 24 hours? (WUAB = 1982) and (WJW = 1983 - I think...Possibly when CBS News went "Overnight".). I can't remember any others 24/debut.

WJW started their "24-Hour Newsroom" slogan around 1991 after WEWS started its "24-Hour News Source" in 1990 during the last of the "Eyewitness News" years. "NewsChannel 5" started in early 1991. Many thought that WEWS and WJW we're copying each other at times in the early to mid-1990s.

I thought WEWS became "Cleveland's 24 Hour NewsSource" when the Persian Gulf war was going on. I seem to recall that's when "NewsChannel 5" became a thing, but I could be wrong there.

As far as the news briefs on TV8 go, I remember that they'd come on during the 9pm shows on FOX with "ei8ht IS NEWS... LIVE" and have Wilma Smith in the newsroom teasing a story that would be run at 10. Also, say what you will about that time of its life, but the fact that we still remember the jingle and the slogan meant TV8 did something right with making themselves known. Sure, it was about 25 years ahead of when ei8ht actually IS NEWS, but hey, maybe they'll dust it off for a 24-hour news feed on 8.5 or something.

It was during the Gulf War, which was early 1991.

You're right about ei8ht is News. It is still effective despite being a short-lived name.

I kind of liked when TV 8 used it's "The Winners" promos.

The "Fox is Eight is News" promo was obviously meant to be catchy. They were fighting several uphill battles at the time. Looking back, I'd wonder why they opted for an hour of 10 pm news. Instead of syndicated programming at ten leading to an 11 P.M. Live newscast. I know 11 P.M. did well in the ratings, but forgot if it had surpassed Channel 5 at the point, or not. Kind of water over the falls now, as they'd have switched at some point to 10:00 anyways. (Maybe waited until Fox had a better Primetime recognition?)

Back then, didn't Fox have a late night show at 11:00 pm or was that prior to Fox moving to WJW?
In fall 1993 - right before the big network swap came to fruition - Fox debuted the infamous (and short lived) Chevy Chase Show at 11p weeknights.

I think WJW wanted to have its news follow network programming as a tradition. There likely was an absence of available programming locally for the 10pm slot.

Chevy Chase's late night show came on around the same time as Arsenio Hall's move to WOIO from WJW. Arsenio came on after Chevy before he moved to 11pm on 19 after Chase's cancellation. Arsenio's show preferred an earlier slot after he was slated to air in a later slot after David Letterman when he left NBC for CBS.

Kind of a crude irony. As for years (It's entire existence, I think) WJ(K)W simply didn't show "The CBS Late Movie/CBS Late Night" programming by choice. At one point, I think it was even deferred to WCLQ. My thinking is WJW anticipated Letterman before the network switch was announced, and brought on Arsenio believing they'd have an all new programming block and audience for late night.

WJW (as Fox) wasn't completely innocent of passing up network shows. I think the "Fox Kids" and "Fox Kids Club" were picked up by WBNX. To this day the 11 A.M. "Fox NFL Kickoff" show is sent over to Channel 8.2

Only because WJW has to produce another pointless airing of Fox 8 News on Sundays, displacing Fox NFL Kickoff to 8.2. As a result, NFL Kickoff is offered in standard definition and in 4:3 with the sides trimmed off due to the way 8.2 is transmitted, resulting in softer video quality and a lack of a widescreen broadcast, cutting off onscreen graphics.

I wonder how many cable/satellite viewers know where to look, or if they can even get 8.2 without an antenna?

Lord knows I'd feel deprived if I didn't have one last chance to hear..."The Muni lot is full" or "It's soooooo beeeauuuuuutiful you should sit on your porch and sip coffee".

In my friendship base...Very few.

Trying to get the "3, 5, and 8 etc. can actually be picked up over an antenna (sans cable)" point past anyone under 55 isn't very easy. Let alone what the sub-channels have to offer. (In the sub's-channels case. Even to those in my age bracket).

To be fair, Fox 8 does it's own local Browns pregame show on Sundays at 11a during the season called "Orange and Brown Countdown", and has done so the last few years.
