Atticus is most correct. WIST did come along and give the market an alternate source for Country and Traditional Country at that. WIST was merely a pebble in the road for TQR but did stir up the water. The biggest downfall for TQR has been a number of thing: Management has been poor for year / Programming did not changed to keep up with the times / Talent has been just so so / and the all mighty Clear Channel mentality that we are king of the hill and always will be were but a few of their stumbling blocks. You cannot replace a Big Paul so they tried by keeping Eloise on the air and that did not last very long. WTQR was a great radio station and now they are a good radio station that desperately needs help. Help needs to start in the front office and roll down the hall (s). They had the opportuntiy but failed to rise to the occasion when WPAW can to be. They ran huge TV and Clear Channel sat back and watched. They jumped into the TV thing way to late and with lame commercials. I'll not waste any more of your time on this subject. Clear Channel created this mess not WTQR!
back to NASCAR....there are just too many options that preclude local radio affiliations.
hundreds of smartphone apps, sat radio, and you know all the rest.
the standard 18/34 male demo drives this car and stats from 2009
show they don't use AM/FM enough.
The Sprint and many Nationwide races are on 950, but Indy has never aired, because they make a station carry the 500 along with the 400. IRL interest is very small here.
The Indy 500 used to be on local radio when it was more popular, but not now.
Big Ape is so correct. TV is having problem with viewers also. Seems TV is anxious to see the start of the rac and the end of the race seems to me that about the same with radio. Why would Ilisten on radio when I can see it on TV live?
People listen to the races on radio in the warmer months because they want to be outside. Last couple of years I have had a number of people ask me where the races are since they are no longer on WSOC. Those people were on the their boat on the lake or out by their pool or working in their yard or out on a Sunday drive.
I think this is where radio station operators are leaving money on the table. These are people with disposable money that radio stations used to like to reach.
