A few voices in the know tell me that Tom Collins is now running the show at WBRF-98.1 and that they will soon be known as "The Great 98" with an all-Oldies format!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always a person that has all the answers. I would not think that WBRF would make the change to oldies in October of this year or any year. They are an old line Country and Blue Grass station and do not see them making any changes. They have an opportunity if they would take it but do not look for that to happen. There are country stations and lots in their coverage area but few that play the kind of country and blue grass that WBRF plays. If the Triad gets an oldies station if will have to come from somewhere else.

If they let Tom do that, it will be the biggest mistake they have ever made. I just don't believe that will happen.

Plus...why would WSMW go back to a format they dropped??? Just doesn't make ANY sense at all.

a little info please. I don't remember WSMW (we are talking 98.7, right?) ever being oldies. I remember WRQK and a brief run at country, when did they do oldies?

I think it was more of a "why would Entercom go back to a format they dropped?" - 93.1 and 98.7 are both Entercom stations.

The songs they did as KissFM are "oldies" now. Does that count?

Not really, but the songs they're playing now are.

I ca't pick up WBRF around here except at home (and usually when I turn them on here, they aren't playing the good kind of country), but I sure like what I heard the last time I was in Winston-Salem at the right time of the day.

Dude even put a station name in this imaginary-world question-thread title.
Gotta give him props, and hope he uses the information he gets to learn and grow.

First Media's Roanoke Rapids FM on 97.9 is also "The Great 98 - Motown, Soul, and Great Rock n' Roll". They are running a 60's, 70's, 80's oldies format with lots of Beach Music. Also, as soon as Clear Channel dumped the WTRG calls for WRVA, First Media took the WTRG calls.

Have no idea of The Great 98 however it does have a ring to it. WBRF is county and they will remain country and sound like a small market radio station. Yesterday I heard what appeared to be some kind of competition on the air. I finally figured it was the Old Time Fiddler's Convention and there was a young person competition for fiddler players. It may have been a good thing that there was little or no mention of the station from the announcers on stage. While this may be very good for the locals I would think they had listeners bailing after the first five minutes. This station has the opportunity to step out and take the lead but continue to fight the country battle with no less than 25 or 30 competitors in their coverage area.

One other thing you can say about WBRF, they still have a overnight announcer catering to the 3rd shifters and
truckers.

Ya gotta love them for that if nothing else!!! It's REAL radio. Imagine that!
