WBRU PD Quit

WBRU/Providence PD Chis Novello has resigned after seven years at 95.5 BRU. His last day at 'BRU will be October 3rd.

I don't think he was PD for seven years as Seth Resler was PD. He may have been with the station for seven years.

Maybe the next PD will actually care about what their "DJ's" sound like from on-air, promos, intro-ing songs and actually playing songs they say they are. Not sure what I'm talking about, try listening to them for a couple of days. I don't think they realize how many people listen to them. The Brown students need to get their heads out of their a$$e$.

The way WBRU sounds over the air has always been an issue for me. Being in Boston now, I don't get to listen to them very often anymore, but when I come back to RI to visit, the hour or two I may listen to WBRU usually has some gaff in it. Last weekend, they introed a song, and about 30 seconds into the song the song just stopped and a few seconds later started over again. Introing songs has always been an issue too as many of the jocks tend to keep the intro to the songs very low--basically inaudible--until they stop talking and fade the song up--usually abruptly--once the words start, if they even stop talking once the singing starts. I love WBRU, but I think the students running the station need to take it a little more seriously. They're running at almost a full-strength 50 KW, although once they move the transmitter to Johnston next year, they WILL be running at a full 50 KW equivalent.

I do like the musical direction the station has taken lately, getting away from the more mainstream ****-rock stuff like Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd and playing better alty bands like MGMT, the Kooks and Kings of Leon.

While there have been some WBRU alumni that got their feet wet there and wanted to get in radio, most don't fall in that category. I don't think you have the same mindset with the students who are just getting their kicks there so it's really the PD's job to make it clear to them that even though radio isn't something they want for a career while they're there they have to act like it is.

come on...it's college radio! don't you remember the good ol' days...you can't compare a college-student-run station to others in the market..I think it sounds pretty good considering most colleges either have closed circuit or less than 100 watts. Remember---college is where you're learning how to do a show...there shouldn't be the expectation that it performs like others in the market. It sounds a lot better than other college radio stations. Those students are extremely lucky they get the exposure that other college djs don't. Once they get their first job, or first internship, then they'll get the formatics down. In the meantime, enjoy radio hosted by newbies.

This controversy has raged on for years. WBRU is a commercial radio station. It isn't a college station just because it's staffed by college students. I agree you can't compare them to other stations in the market though and what they sound like is OK as long as the volunteers aren't just screwing around.
