WBT's Sky Show

Last night, coming back from our fireworks in Charleston, I was picking up the skywave signal of WBT, and they were playing the music for the "Sky Show" fireworks over at Knights Stadium.

I think that it is one of the best things on Charlotte radio every year, as before and after the display, they play music, taking requests for '60s and '70s songs. Also, after the display, they take phone calls about the show. What surprised me this year was that Al Gardner was not on hand when I listened, but instead, Doug Kellett (I believe) was taking calls and playing music.

Except for that Saturday Night Oldies show, and during Christmas, that is the only time that WBT plays music.

What do you think about the coverage of Sky Show?

I turned on the radio Friday afternoon around 3:30, which is something I'm usually too busy to do, and they were playing oldies then.

Now what we need is "good music". They used to play that before Mix 106 came along.

There are too many stations playing evil rock music.

I wonder if next year will be the swan song for the WBT Sky show?

When the Knights move to the new stadium Uptown in 2010 (supposedly) will
WBT be allowed to continue the tradition they started long ago?

I suspect that the center city partners will not let them continue.

Any thoughts?

Why would they not be allowed to continue with fireworks? Is there some prohibition uptown? I would think the Knights would want to continue!

Mike, WBT smartly pulled the fireworks out of uptown after some folks got out of control a couple of years ago resulting in a mini-riot.  They hooked up with the Knights and another broadcast company got involved with promoting the uptown fireworks as "Red, White and Boom!".

Trouble developed again last year with many arrests.  This year, there were 400 Charlotte police personnel on hand to keep a lid on things. I haven't heard how that worked out, but I suspect things were considerably more peaceful this year.

It's only a guess, but I think the crowds for the WBT Sky Show uptown were probably much larger than what Knights Stadium could comfortably handle.

It will be interesting what happens to the 4th of July Fireworks when, and if, the Knights move to a new uptown stadium.

Fireworks draw! Baseball teams love them, particulary over the 4th. The Winston-Salem team does fireworks every night of the 4th of July weekend homestand and more than packs the park! Crowds are fairly contained in the stadium, although the traffic at the adjacent fairgrounds increased dramatically. It will be interesting to see how it works when the Warthogs move to their new, downtown stadium next year.

I suppose it could be a real challenge for two fireworks displays in uptown Charlotte.
