WBUF seems to have its airstaff in place

Today ended the 10,000 songs in a row preview(which felt MUCH longer)and WBUF debuted their airstaff(per WBUF's homepage)...

5-10am: the syndicated Free Beer and Hot Wings show
10am-3pm: Dean
3-7pm: Crowley
7pm-midnight: Ultimate Classic Rock Nights(with Uncle Joe Benson)

Looks like current staffers at TSQ Buffalo that are multi-tasking amongst their other roles. No one new appears to have been brought in to fill the airstaff.

That is the Townsquare nationally-syndicated evening show. Similar to Taste of Country Nights on WYRK and XXL on WBLK. The national radio show also provides web content for the station site, so it sells on-air and online.

I had expected WBUF to carry "Loudwire," which is more mainstream rock rather than classic rock. Uncle Joe Benson is a legendary LA rock radio host.

Free Beer & Hot Wings? Was "Bucket Of Chum" unavailable for mornings? Road Kill playlist. This format will likely die a quick death...

They're not carrying the show for the music. They're carrying the show for the hosts. The playlist is immaterial, This is basically a rock-oriented talk show with some occasional music tossed in.

Free Beer & Hot Wings has very little music. It's almost all guy talk. The amazing thing is they go 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET because of the time zone differences of their national affiliates. I'm not sure if they repeat segments.

I can't seem to understand which markets like Jack and which don't. In some cities, Jack or a variant is still going strong. WCJK Nashville and KBPA Austin are almost always #1, 2 or 3. KCBS-FM in LA has very good 25-54 numbers. It's strong in Dallas, Seattle and Minneapolis. Yet in other places, it died a quick death, such as NYC and Chicago.

Why did it run its course in Buffalo?

My view is it was a holdover from the CBS ownership. The expense for the license exceeded the value. Plus Townsquare wanted to run its nationally-syndicated evening rock show. Those two things led to the change.

Not just corporate radio. Saul Levine is running KKGO in LA with his two kids and two DJs.
Sure looks like more than three or four cars in their parking area. Yes, the sellers can work from home and they can do traffic and billing that way too, but there are more than 4 employees. Check the EEO report.

I didn't say there are four employees. I specified his 2 kids and 2 DJs. Are there other DJs?

My point is the financial crunch is affecting more than corporate radio.

I was just reading of a small station owner in Boston who isn't able to pay his air staff. That's not good.

If you go back to the later 50's in the era when the FCC itself required annual financial reports, you can see that even then half of all stations had no profit. Granted, some owner-operator stations took the profit as a salary for the owner back before newer forms of corporations and taxation were implemented, but it still means that a huge percentage of stations are not profitable.

There have always been cases of employees talking about dashing to the bank to cash the check before the account ran dry. that situation was usually resolved by a sale. Today, nobody wants the "dog" stations and that may mean as much as half of all licenses.

I'm referring to the overall playlist, not the morning show. "Free Beer" is more like Stale Beer. It's another typical Morning Zoo with the female sidekick. ALT Buffalo is offering a similar product. The results for 107.7 are grim. Time will tell if WBUF gets anywhere with this "New" (Stale) approach...
