WBZ-FM HD-2

It's interesting the connection with WBZ- AM and WBCN. WBZ-AM was the first progressive rock station in Boston at night, but they changed to MOR in February 1968. Then WBCN went with progressive rock starting in March 1968. Toward the end of the rock days of WBZ-AM, Dick Summer played progressive rock every night, not just on his Sunday night "Subway" show.

Scanned through the FM dial on my FM/HD portable last night. Reception mostly good--some Cape, NH, and Maine stations came in, as well as most of the HD "extra stations" (Irish, blues, WEEI,
WBZ AM, WXKS AM, Nothing But 70s, WGBH's HD2 of WCRB and HD3 of WCAI, etc). If you only had that radio you could do half decent with the reg FM stations and the extras, and there are 3 AMs that wind up
on HD2 or HD3...but of course you're out of luck if you want to hear the following on that radio:

WRKO (Howie still hopes to wind up on FM next yr--though you may get him on the 95.1 out of
Cape Cod, which DID come in for me)...WWZN Revolution Boston...of course WJIB isn't on an HD2 or 3, and neither is Radio Disney or the multitude of ethnic and religious stations (though WCCM
is on 102.9 at the moment, reg signal)

...another connection between WBZ-AM and WBCN, the New England Patriots broadcasts.

Which will likely be heard with a huge delay on HD Radio.

The Patriots games are on WBZ-FM HD1, so there is no delay. I know what you mean though about the delay the Red Sox when I could get them on WMKK HD3 were delayed.

Jimmy all HD Radio signals are delayed. No way around it and typically the analog is delayed the same amount so that radios will blend back and fourth between the HD-1 and the analog with no jump in time back and forth. Many HD2 and HD3's are actually streamed to the transmitter site using low bit rate data over wan links adding further delay. But if it's on HD radio it's not in real time. Now most forms of television backhauls and transmission methods have many delays today as well so unless your at the game trying to listen you really have no real concept of time. But if it's on HD it isn't real time!

Ok, you're right, but on HD1 it's only about one second delay. In fact sometimes I'll put WCRB HD1 and another radio on analog to get a slight echo-delay effect.

But if I put it on WGBH HD2 (to go with WCRB) it's a very long delay.

Are you saying that analog broadcasts are purposely delayed? I know it may be the case for sports broadcasts to coincide with TV.

All HD broadcasts are delayed several seconds (usually around 7-8 seconds) and this in addition to any profanity delays, STL, etc. And yes the Analog is then delayed again usually at the transmitter site to match back up with the HD signal so that folks radios can blend back and forth between the two signals as they drive or march around in the fringe HD areas.

I would be interested to know "progressive rock" Dick Summer was playing on WBZ AM before February of 1968. What was a typical set of progressive rock on WBZ? I was young, and living in the NYC area, and I do remember him later on WNEW FM for a short time, and then his morning show on WPLJ. I remember Dick Summer playing The Carpenters on WPLJ, early in '73 which made me quickly turn the station

He was playing a lot of local psychedelic groups aka the "Bosstown Sound" as well as groups like:
Cream
Country Joe and the Fish
Jefferson Airplane
The Blues Project
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Bob Dylan (He played the entire John Wesley Harding album when it came out)
Tom Rush
Canned Heat

This is just an example, songs that were not on the top 40.

Of course they say if you remember the '60s you weren't really there.

Lest I forget, he played "Help I'm a Rock" by the Mothers of Invention. Think about that, on a 50,000 watt AM blowtortch. ;D

WBCN: The Rock Of Boston is on 98.5-HD2, and WBCN Free Form is on 100.7-HD3

Wouldn't it make more sense to have what sounds as if it is the primary "WBCN" stream on 104.1 rather than on 98.5? 104.1 was where the old analog WBCN was.

I think WBMX HD-2 made the move over to 104.1 from 98.5 the same time Mix did so, WBCN ended up on 98.5 HD-2

Yes, and I would guess that CBS is more interested in having a more formatically compatible HD2 for "Mix" on 104.1 with "The '80s Channel" on its HD2 rather than positioning the WBCN HD2 for people who are nostalgic for 'BCN's old frequency.

Does anyone remember that about a year ago, there was talk that the Sports Hub was going to launch an "All Bruins Radio" format on one of the WBZ-FM HD channels? I did a search for this before making this post and found nothing about it, however I discretely hearing an announcement about this last year.

CBS radio does have a 24/7 all Phillies station on WOGL HD-4 in Philly. You would think that CBS would bring this station over to one of the WIP-FM subchannels when CBS' Philly sports station went to FM especially since the Phillies are now on WIP-FM in addition to WPHT (AM). (I listen to the Sox on WEEI via my XM radio).
