WBZ iHiss off!

I can now report to all you very-fine “professional broadcasters” that “HD” on the Standard Band sounds like **** [sorry for the asterisk, but the admins here need to remain happy].

I toted my new Sony component “HD” tuner to east-central Indiana this past holiday - to within 40 miles of 700 WLW's B-Knox - next door to the Flaming Head Irish Pub in Mason, OH... WHAT AN INSULT TO THE AUDIO ART—OH, I guess I need to add “quotes” to that phrase [I can't find any art whatsoever in this AM IBOC science fair project]. If such is “salvation” for the AM band—IT’S OVER, my friends! ...Give me my analog back - even in full 5k splendor, PLEASE! Actually got the coveted “HD lock” – but wished I didn’t... I’ve heard 24k MP3 streams on the net from college frat houses that sound better than "The Big One" did in "HD"!

Hey CCU [or is it Bain] and CBS [at WBZ]... SHUT IT OFF—like a bad rerun of Petticoat Junction ::)

Hip,

Nice to see you back in the zoo. (Where arguably Hippos belong). :)

And the Sanitation workers union is glad to see you haven't given up the cause... :)

And major props for the "Standard Band" reference. However A poll here at iBiquity says your opinion about HD radio "sounds like ****". :)

Seriously, - welcome back.

Yes, i can get a lock on WBZ at about the same distance as you with the same radio during the daytime only and then only sometimes with very careful placement of a tunable amplified antenna, and yes it does sound like ****. It sounds very shrill and saccharine-like and has some very strange noises like it's picking up a Martian on the same frequency at times. I can't listen to it for more than a few minutes. Whoever designed AM iblock either has tin ears or never actually listened to it. If you can actually receive it cleanly FM iBlock actually can sound good with good processing which I find rare around here, for ex. WGBH HD sounds great, but AM iBlock is just plain pathetic.

What's wrong with "Standard Broadcast Band?" That's where all the Kilocycles live.

On your Telco circuits, that's not idling voltage. It's "battery." It's not a remote, it's "NEMO."

And I know Clouseau enjoys listening to all his old vinyl. You're not using a phono cartridge, it's a "pickup."

Now, back to my morning shift on Ancient Modulation....

Here is one more industry voice speaking out against HD Radio. In this case it is Maynard Meyer, Chief Engineer/GM KLQP-FM Madison, Minnesota quoted in today's RBR.

"Is anyone surprised to see stations shutting off their HD signals? It's a flawed technology designed only to line the pockets of iBiquity...The analog signal puts out a lot more punch over a longer distance so I would say it is the superior technology."

From an already-long and lengthening list of gaffes, missteps and omissions committed by HD Radio's supporters, by far the most self-defeating has been the stubborn insistence on rolling out HD-AM and then obstinately sticking with it when it's obvious that it's been a technical disaster.

The Alliance and iBiquity's stance on AM-HD is the equivalent of erecting a massive billboard on the radio industry's busiest thoroughfare announcing "LOOK AT US! LOOK AT HOW HD RADIO DOESN'T WORK!" You've gotta wonder how many non-Alliance broadcasters considering HD for their FM properties, having gotten past the costs and technical problems, were ultimately deterred by the HD-AM debacle.

If you spend millions for a national restaurant franchise and drop a few more mil on building the location, it doesn't make much sense to insist that the menu include an item called "Spoiled Food."

Somewhere else and earlier on this board Scott Fybush related the tale of how he was at some industry gathering some time back and over dinner, queried an HD proponent about what the backup plan was going to be if HD-AM proved to generate too much skywave interference. The retort was, IIRC, "there aren't going to be any skywave problems." There you have it! Unilateral revision of the laws of physics by proclamation. By somebody with an agenda.

That's the kind of thinking - or, more precisely, non-thinking - which could spell the ultimate doom of HD Radio.

Don't forget the "beeper" input for putting the phone on the air.

And the big sign the C.E. put on the wall showing the power up/power down
times for each month of the year. It got a little messy in 2007 when he had
to add data for March and November while crossing out half the info in April
and October. Ever since, the C.E.'s two favorite swear words have been
"Upton" and "Markey." ;D

Oh, and how are those two Spotmasters holding up? (Only two?...ouch!)
