WBZ legend Dave Maynard dies at 82

David was big at 'BZ but maybe not as big as he thought he was. When they flipped him to overnights it was a stunner.
He likely thought he should have been doing morning drive earlier in his career. I don't remember if he took over for C. De Sesuze or not?

He only did one year of overnights before taking over for Carl DeSuze on mornings in 1980, and did mornings until '90 or '91 when he was on midddays briefly before retiring.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Maynard back in the mid '70's when he visited WHYN-AM in Springfield as a representative and spokesman for a promotion for one our on air sponsors, seems like it was a food company. He was very personable and professional, and, with his help, the promotion, as I recall, was quite successful. He also called me on the air when I was doing all-nights at WAPE in Jacksonville around 1979, it seems like he was at WHDH at the time. We had a good on air conversation, and he wanted me to play the famous "Ape Yell"! Dave, Rest in peace, you seemed like a class guy!

Let's not forget "Community Auditions" on Ch. 4. "Star of the day, who will it be.........."

R.I.P. Dave

Don't forget, he was also THE voice of WBZ-FM. remember? ...... "It's the MOST music ANYWHERE! Rockin' Stereo 106.7, WBZ-FM Boston!!" (TA-DA!!!!!). No question, he was a true professional and a very down-to-earth guy. He will truly be missed.

Was this comment necessary? What did he do to you to evoke this kind of disrespect?

No disrespect, just a factual reference. It was the turning point in his career.
When a station puts its highest salaried talent on in the overnight it's a request to leave. David made the most of it and survived.

Hope you receive the same kind of comments on your passing as you afforded Dave. Didn't anybody teach you, if you have nothing good to say, keep your mouth shut?

Yep, they wanted him to leave so much when they put him on overnights that they quickly moved him to morning drive for 11 years where he was routinely at the top of the Arbitrons.

I hope somebody wants me to leave so much someday that they give me AM Drive.

Remember when 'RKO snapped up Charles Osgood and in turn WBZ had Dave step up to the plate to do the "The Other Side" commentaries instead? Those were good and who knew that Osgood would not even be missed as a result?

'BZ had a contest once that involved people looking for Dave somewhere in the greater Boston area.
Dave could be selling hot dogs or sweeping sidewalks or whatever in public and clues would be given as to what he might be doing. If you were the first person to step up to him and say "Where's Dave Maynard? WBZ's looking for him" you'd win a swell prize. I recall one of the fastest wins in that contest. Dave was mowing the lawn out in front of the station on Soldier's Field Road.

Were the overnights less of a draw ? Think of how many listeners Dave Maynard had during that time, and the extended coverage across North America as well. Plus somewhere out there, maybe still on YouTube, there is a WBZ Radio commercial promoting both Dave Maynard in the morning and Larry Glick overnights... "Piece of cake, Dave" !! RIP.
