WBZZ returns to Pittsburgh

As I recall, one of the arguments against WBZZ and B-94 as a brand name was that it had gone from being an asset to being a liability. It went from being the hip station for teenagers to being the old fad of yesterday that 20- and 30-somethings had outgrown.

Wait till 50 years from now when the nursing homes are full of Tiffanys and Ashleys and the hot teenage babes are all named Mabel, Alma or Gertrude. :) Although that's already starting to happen to some degree...

I'm already wondering what it would be like to see a room full of little old ladies with tramp stamps and pierced noses. Thankfully, I won't be alive to see it.

TalkDude, reading your last post made my day! Ha Ha!

CBS confirms that the WBZZ call letters are coming to Star 100.7 on Wednesday January 19th, but no programming changes are scheduled to happen.

Of course, no programming changes for now... think Star 100.7 will eventually evolve into a Mainstream CHR? Kiss is a pretty big target, and CBS might want to eat into their pie, if you know what I mean :p

Darn, I was hoping WWCS would pick up the call letters. They could have called it "B-54" and used an
airplane for the logo. ;D

Good idea! The designation B-54 applies to either an Air Force bomber whose contract was cancelled before any of them were built, or a nuclear weapon project that was cancelled because it wouldn't work. That would be a perfect name for a new station on 540 AM.

It means all 4 CBS stations will be near the top of the ratings books as agency buyers see them in alphabetical order.... KDKA, KDKA-FM, WBZZ, WDSY. That may be the entire reason for it.

If so, it makes perfect sense. Look at how many businesses in the phone book are "AAA ..." something or other. Nobody (other than ZZ Top) starts their name with Z.

Nobody uses books any more. It's all software driven, and the buyer/planner typically starts by going to the target demo and running a ranker. Call letters really are irrelevant in a PPM world.

The B became 93.7BZZ a good number of years ago, as digital tuners had become the norm. Also, in the diary days, if a respondent wrote "94," sans the B or the complete calls, B94 and 3WS would split the credit.

Yea, right, no changes. We've all heard that before...Wait two or three weeks...

WBZZ would be more appropriate for one of their AM stations running IBOC anyhow.

AM 1020, WBZZ, Pittsburgh. Jammin' Oldies. And we mean it! Truly JAMMIN' Oldies!

too bad Shelley Duffy and Mel Taylor are the only listenable talent on WZPT

Really knowtheledge? You think? I find the whole morning show unbearable to listen to as well as Mel. She screams and just tells me stuff that I could care less about. Granted, I may not be in their demo, but at least be relatable. I am hip on pop culture, yet "stats" on music acts are really boring if you ask me. Besides, she sounds like a kid.

BTW, you don't find Scott Alexander a bit old either? I find him to be a bit old. JR is just irrelevant, old, and sounds bitter all the time. Not someone I want to travel to work with.

OK so you don't like any of these people, you REALLY don't like Krenn... is there anyone you might have some positive comment about?

I like listening to Quinn. I also liked listening to your buddy Labrozzi back in the day. ;)

Didn't CBS already try to eat into KISS with the return of B 94 which failed. So what would make CBS want to try again on Star 100.7 ?

Do call letters mean much anymore?

Typically not anymore, but there are a few exceptions. In my market - Hartford, Connecticut there are several stations that use their call letters more than the legal ID.

Red Wolf Broadcasting's Radio 104.1 - almost every time the jock cracks the mic they say "Radio 104.1 WMRQ." - Alternative

CBS's HOT AC station 96.5 WTIC-FM goes by the name 96-5 TIC (does that count?)

Buckley Radio's Oldies/Classic Hits Station 102.9 WDRC-FM goes by "102.9 DRC-FM" or just plain "DRC-FM". (Does that count?)

And then in Bridgeport, CT there's Cumulus Media's AC Station WEBE 107.9 which goes by "We-Be 108".

The on AM:

WLAD AM 800 which is a talk station in Danbury, CT goes by "Radio 80 WLAD".

WATR AM 1320 in Watebury which is Oldies/FOX News and Talk just goes by "1320 WATR" or just plain "WATR".

And there's more.

Using the call letters a lot isn't the same as the call letters meaning much.
