WCBS-FM 40th Anniversary

MusicRadioUSA said:
WCBS-FM has begun to announce their big 40th anniversary for the weekend of July 6, 7 and 8th.

40 years? They've been on the air since 1941 (W67NY on 46.7), and on 101.1 with their current call letters since 1947.

40th anniversary of the oldies/greatest hits format, I'd gather. Of course, you could nitpick over the two years of Jack, but as they said when they celebrated their 35th anniversary shortly after their relaunch, they still counted those years because they were online and on HD2.

I hope there will be a radio greats reunion featuring people like Harry Harrison, Don K Reed, Norm N. Nite, Bobby Jay, Cousin Brucie, Dick Heatherton and others who worked at WCBS-FM. There should tributes to Ron Lundy, Bill Brown and other NYC radio personalities who have passed away.

I am sure they will play old aircks of our Legends, will some call? I hope so. I wish they could have done something that sat outdoors but I guess a lot of the Guys (retired) and on to other things. Congrats on 40 yrs, Now I feel OLD!! Keep it rocken another 40 yrs!! :)

What other DJs are available besides the ones mentioned...?

Dan Daniel, Ed Baer, Herb Oscar Anderson and Gary Stevens are still with us. As far as CBS FM alumni, Max Kinkel is still around. He had a great overnight show on CBS-FM.

I was wondering if they would do anything for their 40th,considering that huge Jack fiasco, but I'm glad they will be doing something. I would love to hear another Radio Greats celebration, of course focusing on CBS-FM.

The only thing that CBS-FM needs to bring back for the 40th will be former PD Joe McCoy and also it needs to bring back the Frank Gari jingles. I hope this one should return for CBS-FM's 40th anniversary. I have a link to this one from Don Swaim's WCBS-AM Tribute site.

And in addition to all of that, CBS-FM needs to play more 1955-63 pre-Beatles songs for this station for the 40th anniversary playing some early stuff from Chuck Berry, Elvis, Bill Haley and many others as well as lots of doo-wop music from Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", the Penguins "Earth Angel", the Five Satins "In the Still of the Nite" and just to name a few. Look at Fox Oldies in the Hudson Valley right now, they play a bunch of oldies as well as a bunch 1955-63 pre-Beatles stuff. They did a great job for this format on 98.9 which has been on the air for a year now, and mothing's has got to change. Van Ritshcie, Bob O, Bob Corisino and Joe Manglass also had the best personalities when it comes to Fox Oldies. They also bring in many of the listeners since the lost of the original CBS-FM from 2005 when it was prior to "Jack". Remember, WBPM's former "Cool 92.9" usually brought in listeners from the loss of CBS-FM since June 3rd 2005 when it was "Jack" and even it was still on until 2007 when the station returned. Prior to CBS-FM's return, Pamal took over CC and flipped to a Classic Hits/Rock format known as "Classic Hits 92.9" which is now "92.9 WBPM" under Randy Turner (aka Randy Turnip). HV never had an oldies station until 5 years later when Fox Oldies went on the air at 98.9.

Just one more thing, bring back the 50's stuff to CBS-FM and dump the 80's just for the 40th anniversary and maybe they should bring back Joe McCoy and bring back the reverb just for the 40th anniversary show. It could be for one time only, and also bring the Frank Gari CBS-FM jingles back to the airwaves. I missed those back in the 80's and 90's when CBS-FM had those jingles, so it needs it back for the 40th anniversary.

40 years of music and hits from 1955 onward would be fabulous that weekend!

Here's more of the old CBS-FM jingles that they are going to use it for the 40th Anniversary of the station. These are from Don Swaim's website, but I hope would look forward to it.

This jingle also includes the classic The Best of Our Years Together" jingle. This one is from the package called "Taking You There With the Music" package, and I hope they should bring it back.

Here's more! This was one of the first jingles to use it for CBS-FM and it will appear during the 40th Anniversary of the station.

Here is the classic TOH which was used during the first years of CBS-FM, but this sounded almost similar to the Drake-Chenault TOH jingle that it was used by KHJ, CKLW, WOR-FM, WRKO and other Drake stations that used it, but this sounded a little bit different, you don't hear a voiceover announcing the jocks or the special weekend when it was made.

During the first years of CBS-FM, they included the jocks that you all remember and it's going to bring it back for the 40th anniversary of CBS-FM this July. I remember since 2007 when CBS-FM did the "Radio Greats" show, they used the same jingles such as Norm N Nite and Don K Reed in the "Jock Cuts" package.

These early CBS-FM jingles came from PAMS entitled "Gold Evolution", and I hope this needs to bring it back just in time for the 40th anniversary of CBS-FM.

Here's more classic jingles that you are going to hear on CBS-FM for the 40th anniversary. These jingle came from the late 70's or early 80's to say the least, but I don't know what jingle company that has this one to run the CBS-FM jingles from the late 70's. We'll give you an example.

Here is a sample of sounders that you are going to hear for the 40th anniversary of CBS-FM.

That is all. I hope CBS-FM needs to bring back all the good stuff for the 40th anniversary celebration, along with the 50's 60's and 70's music like the one you'll hear on "Fox Oldies" in the Hudson Valley as well, and bring back Joe McCoy, Don K Reed, Bobby Jay, Dan Daniel, Dick Heatherton, Steve O'Brien, Ed Baer and a few others, and let's not worry about Bob Shannon anymore. This is going to sound almost like the "Rock & Roll Radio Greats Reunion" special like Joe McCoy did with CBS-FM since the 80's and 90's, plus, some airchecks from CBS-FM glory days before "Jack" came in. I would love to hear it, and in the mortal words of Ziggy...

I remember the day well..I was stationed in the Coast Guard on Governor's Island off Lower Manhattan, and listening to them in the "White Hats" enlisted men's club....A bunch of us were enjoying it, with our "beverages". We were just in our 20s, and loving the music. And I distinctly remember one of the songs they played was Percy Faith's Summer Place!!

Haven;t heard them in a couple years, since my last visit to NYC. wish we had a station like that "Down East" here in Maine!

I'm looking forward to the the July 6-8 Anniversary Weekend on CBS-FM. The promos are a little vague regarding what the programing is going to sound like. Though I am hoping it will reminiscent of the old Reunion Weekends they used to do.

Those Radio Greats weekends were fantastic. There were six of them, the first in August 1984 and the last in June 1998. During those fourteen years quite a few of the great personalities passed, including Bob Lewis, Jack Spector and Charlie Greer. Wolfman Jack did the reunion in June 1995 and passed away two weeks later.

I'm really looking forward to that July weekend. Dan Ingram, Dan Daniel, Harry Harrison, Cousin Brucie, Herb Oscar Anderson, Ed Baer,Don K Reid, Dick Heatherton, Bobby Jay ,and Max Kinkel are still with us. If they don't do full shows, I would hope they will be able to do some reminscing. I recalll in July 2002 during their thirtieth anniversary, some of the shows were broadcast at the Museum of TV and Radio and each one of the jocks, after Harry Harrison did one hour shows on July 7th. That pretty much signaled the end of their golden age. Don K's Doo Wop Shop was cancelled later that year and in 2003 Harry Harrison and Dan Ingram left, and of course, the ultimate low point on June 3, 2005 when they were hijacked..to this day the dumbest, most inane move in programming history.(WEMP is a close second).

It will be a great weekend, and unlike the Reunion weekends when I drove three hours to the New York area to listen to it, we have the advantage of streaming. If only CBS streamed back in the day!

and also lets forget Dan Daniel (Triple D) who also was there, I am hoping maybe he can call too.
Hoping all are well and know we still love them all!!! :)
