WCER Signing off?

Got a call that the station is telling what few clients they have, today is the last day.

I wonder if despite turning off the station, they'll keep it at High power after sunset, just one more time. :)

We have confirmed that today will be WCER's last day, though we don't know what time they'll kill the filaments (either high power or low power :D).

As the story goes, owner/GM Jack Ambrozic has retired to South Carolina - a fact confirmed by an SC address for him in WCER's most recent FCC ownership report, filed in February. The other co-owner, Leodis Harris, is apparently not continuing the station's operation.

Our best guess is that the place goes dark whenever the OM leaves the building for the day.

That station was a waste of spectrum. Keep the anti-Semitic nonsense and conspiracy theories on shortwave where it belongs.

Was talking about this on Twitter...

WCER carries a number of shows from the same network which brings them conspiracy talker Alex Jones.

Many of those shows air on domestic shortwave stations aimed at fringe audiences, and many of them buy time on those stations.

Yeah, that was me, sitting in my media writing class, tweeting about media! :D

First WINW, and now this.

Two AMs going dark in the same city in the same month. Has that ever happened before?

Somebody please roll tape.

C.

Small AMs are dying all over the country. Mostly due to lack of revenue. There will be more. Ripe for someone interested to pick them up cheap... but only worthwhile if you can get more than one and network them.

Tried to email the station today to verify if they planed on sighning off today the air today but the email bounced back. Did you check with the station before you started this thread? ::) Were your sources reliable?

Speaking for myself and OMW, we knew beforehand for several days that this could be coming.

I wrote most of the piece ahead of time - mostly with the historical records - and withheld publishing anything until we got independent confirmation from at least two different sources (one of which was a former OM there and is an R-I contributor here). From there, I updated the post to reflect new details or whatnot.

As per the sign-off date, if it's not today, it could be really soon. My guess is that Leodis Harris wants(ed) it today because it is the end of the month, and presumably when most - if not all - of the fundamentalist preachers and brokered programming contracts run out.

If it's held back, it might be because some contracts are still outstanding.

I've also got confirmation that WCER isn't going off the air tonight (and updated the OMW post). Nonetheless, a change definitely could be in the air over at AM 900.

Is this the case? Can't hear this station here in Columbus.

Maybe they will keep the audio stream going after they leave the air?

You can't hear it in Columbus after night because their measly 75 watt night signal only covers the immediate Canton area. Even in daytime it totally misses C-Bus.

Their audio feed is probably tied into the OTA source in some way that, when the tx goes, it will go too. (Why would you keep an automation computer on like that otherwise?)

I think this is a very fluid situation, and I have no idea what in the world is going to happen now.

I was listening to their stream earler today.. Apperently the timing on their automation is off because going in and out of breaks on Dave Ramsey they were going back to network and cutting off network mid content.

Yep, WCER lives, for now. They HAD planned to shut it off today.

Could there be a buyer? It's at least not a broken facility like WINW was...

Apparently so. A listener to their stream heard dead silence after 12:04AM for a prolonged period after the top-of-the-hour CNN newscast. The programming is live again, but this might be a recurring problem for quite a while.

Jack Ambrozic remains the acting/controlling partner of Melodynamic - not Leodis Harris. Station employees and at least one client were told on Wednesday that a shut down would come yesterday. Then yesterday, there was a change of plans. Why there was a change of plans is anyone's guess - but I think a lot of this speculation is somewhat fruitless unless someone talks to Jack Ambrozic himself. Maybe PD Arnie Bloom would like to comment?

Tried emailing Jack Ambrozic, via the email address he listed on his FCC application back in 2007. That email bounced back because it said his email account is full:
Mail quota exceeded
. Maybe he doesn't read his WCER email?

What is the update on the station? Are they still on the air?

I debated typing this but here goes:

Yesterday about midmorning I sent a "comment" through Bible Broadcating Network, website mentioning that WCER was about to leave the air and giving them basic station info..That it might be an opportunity for them..Last year they spent $2,500,000 for WDYN-FM in Chattanooga, Tennessee..In saying this, I find it hard to believe BBN would take action this quickly over an email comment from a listener..But It was in the afternoon that stories began coming out about WCER/Ambrozic changing their minds..

Update:Still on the air as of 12:30 PM
