WCJW

WCJW Warsaw NY was nice enough to invite us up to there studio last year for a live on air interview. Thank you! What a nice radio station and a great bunch of people running it. Sorry we wern't able to make it up there this year. Although this year we did get to meet Criss Angel "mind freak" and get a 1 hour interview with him here in Clearwater. Super nice guy. Thanks for spend the time with us and giving us the VIP Passes. Adam and the 96.7 crew www.wkid967fm.com "the only radio station in the world owned and operated by kids!"

Thanks for your kind words, I'll pass them along to Lloyd.

Hope you can make it back soon. We have some exciting things going on -- for example, our new FM service at 103.7, which will allow live broadcasts of high school sports and expanded local news coverage beginning in a few weeks.

That's going to be a great station! does Lloyd own that one too? Hope we can make it up there over winter break we would love to see the new station. Take care, Adam and the 96.7 crew.

Freebird, please accept my congratulations and sincere best wishes to you and Lloyd and the CJ crew. This is fantastic news for your station. Best of luck! Way to go!

Wow, how big is Warsaw, NY these days? My aunt and uncle lived there back in the early 60's. They had an old farmhouse for awhile. I loved it there but they moved. The only thing I remember was a tiny post office!

WCJW is a good small town radio station which provides plenty of local programming for Warsaw and Wyoming County. That FM translator should be just the tonic. The AM is on 1140, a heavy duty clear channel with WRVA Richmond 460 miles directly due south. Hope WCJW can squeeze enough juice out of the FM translator, considering that it's on the second adjacency to both WEDG at 103.1 and WHTT on 104.1.

Good luck with your new FM. Will the signal reach Rochester? If not then when I'm in your neck of the woods I will have to listen to it.
It is also great to read that your station decided to expand local news. It would be nice of a couple of Rochester radio stations would follow your lead.

Best of luck to your new FM. Expanded news coverage huh? Umm....no never mind; too far to drive anyways. ;D

I believe this is just a small translator.

I have friends who live in Warsaw and it really is a vibrant little town. I think it is GREAT that the only locally station will now have coverage at night.

Here's the projected contour for the CP for translator W279BO 103.7 from Radio-Locator. Not likely exact, but close enough for the purpose of discussion in this thread. Seems to protect the second adjacent channels in Buffalo, 103.3 and 104.1.

Yes, the predicted 54 dBu contours of both WEDG and WHTT-FM fall west of our Merchant Road site and are fully protected by the 94 dBu contour of the translator. In reality, the strength of both of those Buffalo stations is far less than 54 dBu in the valley, so their signals have never really been "useable" in the village of Warsaw anyway.

Reception near Rochester is affected by WDKX on 103.9, so unless you have a selective receiver, you'll probably have trouble hearing it anywhere in Monroe County. Our interference contour protects WDKX by a wide margin (in fact, if our site were one mile further southwest, it would meet the required spacing for first-adjacent 3 kW Class A) but their signal does somewhat better to the south than would normally be expected, due to favorable terrain.

The translator has been operating under an STA since June and will begin 24 hour operation in September. This will greatly improve our service during the winter because full 2.5 kW power on the AM isn't allowed until 7:30 in December, 7:45 in January, and 7:15 in February. Although we have pre-sunrise authority at 331 watts, it's limited to the 15 minute period between sunrise at WRVA (which is a few degrees east of Warsaw) and local sunrise. However, with the translator, we'll be able to go live with the morning show every day at 6 and carry evening high school sports.

We were recently granted a CP to increase power to 250 watts (directional towards the west to protect WCIY's Geneseo 103.5 translator and 103.7 WQNY in Ithaca) and I'm picking up the new antenna at the factory tomorrow. It should be installed next weekend, signal reports are welcome. The RDS encoder sends "W-CJ-W" as the program service name.

I'll never forget doing sales at CJ in the mid 80's and watching my car burn in the parking lot. Sensing an opportunity for live and local breaking news, Lloyd ran a mic out the front door and did a live news story on the burning car. I should have sold some auto insurance ads to run with the story. Guess that's why I'm no longer in radio sales! (Tell Lloyd I said "hi". After you tell him the burning car story, he'll know who's saying "hi".)

I, too, wish to extend congratulations to the entire crew at WCJW. The addition of an FM frequency is long overdue. I'd be curious to see just how far afield the translator will be heard.

A couple questions.

Is the translator in mono or stereo? While stereo would be ideal for a music based station, I've always been under the impression that FM stations in mono tend to get out a bit further.

With regard to the expanded evening programming, will it be live or automated? I'm referring to the normal country music format, as I know the HS sports broadcasts will have to be live.

Best of luck to you all.

We decided to go stereo, since most car radios manufactured in the past 15 years have very effective "blending" functions which minimize the stereo coverage penalty. We may turn off the pilot during extended mono program segments if I can find a way to do this reliably.

Evening programing will be live until 8 PM or so, then voice tracked until 6 AM. However, we will provide a way for the Wyoming County 911 center to go live at any time (independent of EAS) in case an urgent emergency message needs to be broadcast to the community.

Lloyd and I are considering programming a different sub-genre of country music each night of the week. For example, on Monday we might focus on southern rock, on Tuesday we would feature a classic country show, Wednesday would be blues night, Thursday would be country rock, etc. Maybe a live Saturday night request show. What do you think?

I love the idea of programming different aspects of country music at night. That approach would certainly give WBEE and WYRK a run for their money, considering they'll be cranking out the same tired "hits" every night.

I'm sorry I won't be able to hear this programming where I live out in Ontario county. It's a shame you guys don't webcast. Hopefully that is one thing you can consider if the RIAA would give you a break with the extra royalties.

We love the idea of a variaty of music on different days, thats what we do and it has been very successful for us. Maybe some day we will be working for you! or who knows maybe we will even be able to buy the station! :) Playstations and X-Boxes in every studio! ;D

I know you posted this with a sense of joy and humor, so my comments will sound like that crazy old guy down the street who yells "get off my lawn, my sidewalk, my street... crazy kids!" (Otherwise known as my boss and wacky Uncle Oskie.)

You and your buds, no doubt major dudes and the future Tony Hawks, might want to re-think the "X-Boxes and PlayStations in every studio plan." Radio competes with iPods, satellite, TV, the Internet and yes, X-Boxes and PlayStations for every listener. Sure, you can multi-task with the best of 'em, but when you're on the radio, when you're selling radio time, when you're pouring over ratings and research, you'll find that it's best done while not multi-tasking. Some day, you'll thank me for this: Lose the X-Boxes and PlayStations.

We were just kidding about the playstations and x-boxes. We don't even have any here. It's hard enough trying to keep everyone quiet and keep them from walking in or out of the room while were live, but we still manage. Hopefully someday we will work, manage or own a a big station. But for now were having fun! :)
