WCOA FM Dead air

Note to program dept. Dead air for the past few Sunday afternoons between 2 and 4.

Careful, it might become the most highly rated show on the station. ;)

I know Sunday afternoon is a zero-point-zero type of period for listeners, but damn. Cumulus is truly half-assing this station. Why do I think it's only meant to be a temporary thing?

Having bad storms here in the area, I wouldn't be surprised if they got struck and had to resort to back up but that's FUNNY! COA SUCKS and I don't like their lineup. Kim is the only thing worth listening to. This format will not last long. Maybe they can re brand to mix 100, and put ESPN radio on 107.3 and end HMN's miserable existence. Football season is upon us.. and being a gator/jags fan, it be nice to be able to listen.. (redzone anyone?)

Cumulus.. grow a pair!

I did not notice the unmodulated carriers ("dead air") broadcast by WCOA-FM this past Sunday since the only programs I usually hear broadcast by the station are "The Kim Komando Show" and "Sound and Vision Radio", though I wish "Sound and Vision Radio" would be scheduled for broadcast on a different day rather than Saturday between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. since WAVH-FM usually broadcasts the last two hours of "The Kim Komando Show" during that timeslot after broadcasting the first hour.

If I were working for WCOA-FM, I would suggest adjusting the Sunday programming schedule to make time for broadcasting "Sound and Vision Radio" on that day. Here is my idea of a Sunday programming schedule with "Sound and Vision Radio" included along with a recent Sunday schedule I've kept since April (in case the Sunday schedule or any other day's schedule has changed since April, you may post the current programs and times):

My idea

Between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. - The Best of the Glenn Beck Program
Between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m - Home & Gardens Radio (replaces third hour of "The Best of the Glenn Beck Program")
Between 10:00 a.m and 12:00 p.m. - Sound and Vision Radio (replaces "Meet the Press")

Recent Sunday programming schedule

Between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m - The Best of the Glenn Beck Program
Between 9:00 a.m and 11:00 a.m. - Better Lawns & Gardens
Between 11:00 a.m and 12:00 p.m. - NBC's Meet the Press

(WCOA-FM's initial programming schedule is available here and audio recordings of "Sound and Vision Radio" are available here here)

I don't find references to anatomy amusing.

Haha! Maybe Crapulus should just stop the world and flip this tin can to Mario FM....After all, it's all about Mario...all the time. Better not have any doctors talking about body parts, though.

Is it safe to assume 100.7 needs contracts for both the Mobile and Pensacola markets in order to broadcast a talk show?
Most all of the good shows already had homes in Mobile and Pensacola when WCOA-FM signed on. It doesn't appear that Cumulus prepared to snatch any contracts for talk shows in advance of the flip of 100.7.
So, how many years will it take to put together a decent lineup. Just waiting for contracts in Mobile and Pensacola to lapse at different times and on and on. Trying to negotiate to purchase a contract from a small local radio station (1330/1620/790).
Seems like a nightmare.
Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to give Don Parker an open mike for 6 hours a day until they find a good lineup. Maybe bring in Barbie from WABD since they're co-owned now.

No negotiation. If the distributor wants the program for a large station or market. They will take it, or you will share it, or be told to drop it.

Then why do you think none of this is going on right now? 100.7's lineup is far worse than 1370's. Of the Pensacola Talk Radio stations I now rank them last out of 5 commercial competitors: 1370, 1330, 1620, 790, 100,7. If it wasn't on FM I'd never give it another listen.

HEEEH, well as I stated, the recent storms might have knocked equipment down. I'm not sure if they have to file that with the FCC but it's not like 94.3's schedule (mostly dead air) must be nice to throw away money like that.

On a Cumulus side note.. am hearing a lot of the same songs on 104.1/106.1 so this might be an indication that they might be getting ready to stunt 106.1, the outcome might be

1)put 104.1 on 106.1 (as this is mostly a pensacola station, ft walton/mobile has BLX)
2)100.7 moves to 106.1 and Q 100 returns around labor day wknd with a retro blast of music

and I have a strong feeling HMN might become ESPN radio before the end of the month (football season!) with the push back to 97.5, 100.7 could return to top 40 if they decide to expand their library.

HMN sounds very corporate and no local flavor

Rob DLT is the number one station in Mobile key demos. It ain't goin' nowhere.

WDLT and Magic have pretty much been the same station for a long time. You just didn't hear it until recently with the DLT move to 104.1. WDLT won't move to 106.1. If anything, Magic goes away. WDLT stays put on 104.1 and covers both markets.

Don't know what to make of 100.7. Don't know if they want to take it back to any form of AC with the recent purchase of 94.1. It for sure will not go back to Top 40 with WABD covering that. Move COA FM to 106.1 and take 100.7 rock to take on TK.

IF 107.3 does flip sometime in the near future, I don't see it going ESPN. 1450am might have something to say about that. I say it goes to a simulcast of 710am.

I disagree on the 107.3 thing. ESPN would fit nicely. 1450 can say all it wants to but they have to know about one thing and that's AM propagation at night. Their signal sucks here anyway.

Not sure if 1450 is owned by Clear Channel but, putting 710 would be good but do see something coming right before football on the FM dial.

If the PD's are reading this, remember, we do listen or there be no ad dollars.

Keep DLT on 104.1, 100.7 106.1 switch would make cents, I 100 would fit especially if HMN makes the move to ESPN radio or 710 am.

Rob,

What you forget is the Pensacola/Mobile stations do not care about serving FWB. FWB/Destin does not count towards the Pensacola or Mobile ratings.

1450 serves Pensacola. That's it. They already have the rights to ESPN, Saints, Hornets, Bama football, Blue Wahoos, Ice Flyers. No, it's not owned by Clear Channel. Cumulus will not put top40 back on 100.7.

Rob, 98.3 WDLT in Mobile and Magic 106.1 in Pensacola were identical radio stations with identical morning shows and very similar playlists. The stations have unique coverage areas compared to most of the other local commercial radio stations... this just happened to make the two stations a nice combo if Cumulus wanted to start a simulcast. Each station had DJs speaking to the locals and played separate commercials for the Mobile and Pensacola radio markets... Unique idea isn't it? Rob, you are getting a taste of this right now because WDLT 104.1 is still "moving in" to the now 100kw station so there are plenty of artifacts left over from WDLT's "Mobile Only" days.

Now that Cumulus has essentially "blown up" the Mobile/Pensacola radio market and bought everything that wasn't tied down, they didn't have any room left for duplicate formats. WDLT and Magic 106.1 were merged together onto one frequency, WDLT 104.1 (which should be the first format to work on 104.1 since K104 was all up in ya.)
Magic 106.1 will stay around a while longer... gotta play nice with their Pensacola advertisers and figure out what's best for the frequency (I suspect Cumulus wasn't exactly prepared to take on 97.5 when this all started exploding, I'm sure they were happy to take on the work)... but probably around Christmas we'll see some stunting on 106.1 to get the rest of the listeners transitioned over to 104.1 and finally get something new out of that little 6kw FM. Right now I'm wondering if News/Talk 1370 could still wind up on 106.1 as the new Cumulus News/Talk format on 100.7 is nothing at all like the old WCOA Pensacola is used to hearing. It would be very easy for Cumulus to move the current 1370 lineup to Pensacola's 106.1 and NOT duplicate any shows on Pensacola/Mobile/Destin/Pascagoula 100.7 (yeah, they are IDing all those cities and more).

I guess we'll have to see what comes down from Cumulus Atlanta's News station WYAY. If they add some Talk to 106.7 in Atlanta it could easily migrate down to Mobile. Is there any other market that Cumulus has launched an all news or FM news/talker in 2012?

Time will tell on this whole thing, it sucks having too many formats of the same effing thing. Why? When they know that DLT's signal can be heard in both Mobile and Pensacola markets. Advertising dollars can work on that one 100KW station alone (in Saraland now.. WTF happened to Atmore)

I see what you mean by this and it's rather dull. What the hell is the "sweat hotel" is that the DJ getting wild about a slow groove track? These stations are def. urban and don't need to be heard out here. The demos here are mostly Coast 93.3, Country 105.5 and Sirius Radio

Again, this is my feel about 107.3 they removed their HD-2 stream of ESPN which could mean nothin' or somethin'

The WCOA thing sucks and was hoping to hear some big names like Dave Ramsey or Clark Howard, Rush and the others. Dead Eye Radio is boooring.

Thanks for your input guys
-Rob

As long as Cumulus is running things down here I don't think we'll have any Urban competition come along. I suppose Cumulus could wind up buying more stations and decide to sell off their Urban FM combo... but who would want to buy it?

That would be sad, I could see more Sirius subs go up and up.. (sarcastic) If they bring back Journey I'd be a happy camper.
