WCPO Aircheck

With regards to the news that was contained in the May, 1964 aircheck: There was a nice blend of national, international (both no doubt from their wire service) and local which may have come via the station's connection with WCPO-TV. Did anyone notice that the name of one of the people in the news who was in accident was "Cleveland Brown"? As he was 68 then (in 1964), he couldn't have been named after the football team because it didn't begin until 1946. By the way, the Reds came back to win that first game of the doubleheader against the Mets by a score of 6-5. The Reds also won the second game, 6-3.

WCPO Radio used to give the news at five minutes before the hour. Because of their connection to WCPO-TV and the Cincinnati Post (for a time called the Cincinnati Post & Times-Star), news departments of other Cincinnati stations used to record WCPO's newscasts and then listen to see if they had any news events which they didn't have.

Thanks js for posting these airchecks. And hey Hippo, how about those WOXR airchecks that you said you dug out several months back? Think you could share those at some point?

Keys2... I haven’t forgotten about you or the thousands of others who loved WOXR during the Rick Sellers era. I have hours of scoped tape, but here’s the prob... They were recorded on a Teac 6010 QUARTER TRACK. As I was a teen on a budget at that time – I flipped over the reel and used the other side. Today, my only surviving reel-to-reel is a Revox PR-99 HALF-TRACK. You can imagine the dilemma. In the early 90s, we retired our Otari 5050 machines that offered both half and quarter-track playback heads from my radio station. I desperately moved a lot of that stuff to half-track format before those machines left the building, but I neglected the ‘OXR reels... STUPID ME!

I’m trying to score a quarter-track reel-to-reel to finish what I earlier failed to complete. BTW, I have hours of Chris Bailey on WKRQ and Jackson Armstrong on WIFE and 13-Q in the same format. Also, the entire 1230 WUBE 60s jingle package suffered the same fate, so my motivation remains. I promise within the next few months [as precious time permits] that I’ll properly archive the balance of this wonderful history and share it. Rest assured, the Sony SLH-180 tapes are in good condition after 35-years...WOW!

Down on the farm ;) :) ;D

Thanks alot for making this air check available!!! This is the best example of WCPO that I have heard since I last heard the station at the end of 1965!!! As a kid I can remember arguing with people that WCPO was every bit as good as WSAI at the time. It is also interesting that Gary Corry was the survivor of the WCPO to WUBE transition. This isn't the only time, that I've seen ownership changes, management changes, almost entire air staff changes, yet the overnight guy stayed intact!!! Gary eventually ended up at New York City's Top 40 station 970-WWDJ in the early 70s, I understand when they were trying to compete with WABC. WWDJ appeared after Top 40 WMCA-570 flipped to talk. Unfortunately, WWDJ only lasted from 1971-1974, when it ended up going religious...which it still is to this day...as is WMCA for that matter.

I think the idea behind :55 was to be back to playing music as other stations were beginning
their on-hour newscast. For teenagers, music was more of a draw than the news. WCPO was more
than happy to give up the five minutes before the hour for a chance at the following 55 minutes.

When WSAI countered with a newscast at :55, WCPO moved their news up to :54.
WCPO called it "Lead News". The newscast began with "WCPO Lead News - tells you more at 54"
and ended with "WCPO Lead News - tells you more, says it better".

As indicated in the 1964 aircheck, WCPO also moved its primary newscast to :30 which was dubbed
"News Power on the half hour".

The original 123/WB debuted 20-20 News, long before the Drake era.

Great aircheck, superior quality. Fun sound. You gotta love that every song started hot and the jock potted down after a full second or longer to do his talk over before the fast fade up to the vocal. ;-)
