WCRB 99.5 Poor Signal

HHH said:
How can you tell who has debt?
Well, its a pretty well-known fact that companies like Clear Channel and CBS overpaid for aquisitions made in the late 1990s.
Both companies are now slashing personell. And it (generally) has little to do with their billing. It has to do with their debt.

Wrong, it has to do with profit.

Slashing personel does not have to be because of debt.

It can simply be to make more profit....regardless of debt.

Kiss and Jammin' bill very very well, but are slashing personell. The debt is killing them. They need cash big time. The same with CBS radio.

Cutting personel, cutting costs, and budgets does not necessarily mean they have debt. It can simply mean they see an oportunity to not spend money where it doesn't return revenue.

I would doubt that CBS has much (if any) debt.

My point was that WCRB's mortgage was paid off years and years ago. It is free and clear in terms of major debt. It may not look like they are making a lot of money relative to their "potential" but all this talk of "potential" earnings to someone who just spent 80 something mil for the station requires a lot of catching up before true profitability kicks in.

You are not responding to any of Keiths logical post above.

You speak of what you do not know.

Re-read Keiths post.

I guess we could go on forever with this debate.

I will simply say that the fact that you doubt whether CBS radio has any debt after paying ridiculous sky-high prices for properties in the 1990s, is astonishing.

The Wall Street Journal and others have written about the debt problem with (especially) Clear Channel, CBS radio and others. Both Clear Channel and CBS are slashing staffs and spinning properties. If you think that this is because the current model is working and they simply want to be more efficient, you are mistaken. The 1990s acquisition chickens have come home to roost, the numbers are not working, and they need to chuck baggage FAST.

Where do you think all of the acquisition money came from? Mel and Lowrey's mattress?

This is mostly about bank debt, believe me.

CBS has more money than God.

If they have debt...it's to their own "CBS Capital" division....paying themselves back with interest.

It's all about "revenue growth"....and the justification of invidual assets.

Again, go back and read earliercomments and scenario re: WCRB....

Live on the South Shore and am having a hard time getting clear reception on the new WCRB frequency 99.5.

They are now licensed to Lowell. So, if you are not in the Merrimac Valley what do you do.

WCRB cannot be a commercial success in the future unless it improves its reception in the Boston area.

This was well established, and discussed by everyone, that the signal would be weaker in much of Boston after the swtich. So why are you so suprised by this now?

I might have said it in this thread or another, i can pick up 99.5 in my car down on the bottom of Cape Cod.

I've been checking it out whenever I've been driving around all over the greater Boston area. On an average, decent quality digital-tuning car stereo, it's really pretty good most everywhere. A little noise in spots in the high intermodulation areas near the Pru and FM-128, and maybe a little multipath when in the shadow of a hill, but even still listenable in all those places. I'm wondering if a lot of the complainers are trying to listen to 99.5 on poor quality tuners, or receivers with poor/no antennas.

It certainly comes in well in North Reading where I work; a friend asked for an aircheck so I brought my portable recordable cass. Walkman in, etc. Stick in Andover not far away.

Having read the post previously I focused on both 99.5 and 102.5 on a ride to Western MA. My car radio is ave at best and lost 99.5 between Sturbridge and Springfield but 102.5 was very strong down to about the Springfield city limits on I-291. Then poof.

Live in the Providence, RI area, can not pick up the signal anymore. No other classical stations in the area? Are the new owners of 102.5 from Texas?

The fringe signals of WCRI 95.9 Block Island, RI or WFCC 107.5 Chatham, MA (Cape Cod) might come in in Providence for classical.

The new owner of 102.5 is Greater Media in Boston, who also own WMJX (AC), WBOS (AAA), WROR (Classic Hits) and WTKK (Talk).
