WCTC to Flip?

Friend of mine who used to work at WCTC is saying WCTC is done, done, done.

They just got rid of their midday woman Maggie Glynn who is currently replaced by Lauren Pressley. This is just to buy themselves some time before they flip to some type of music programming.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Im not surprised considering all the bad changes they've made and not made the last 5 years.

why to music? i doubt in this day and age anyone is going to put music on an AM. although i think it'd be cool if some little fringe station picked up smooth jazz outside of cities where smooth jazz has recently been dumped.

Could it be flipping to sports talk? They still have a contract with Rutgers for football and basketball.
It would be nice to get an AM oldies station. WCTC only goes 15 miles during the day and 5 miles at night, so it doesn't have a big signal.

WCTC would make a nice outlet for Country music in Central NJ. For years and years there was always WKMB 1070 which did well, why not fill that void? Rutgers sports would fit nicely with this format.

Historically, CTC always enjoyed its greatest, most consistent success by being a full-service local station with high-profile personalities. The names Jack Ellery, John Taylor, Jack Shreve, Mike Jarmus, Steve Tapper, Happy Bernie and even Carol Kaiser still ring in the ears. Of course, they found their meal ticket years ago with Rutgers sports. Local news voices and coverage -- superior in all forms -- a veritable smorgasboard of local politics -- yum-yum-yum!

I know that I'm leaving a whole slew of co-workers from those times out of this (and I sincerely apologise), but there are ways to make serious bread with a local signal, and CTC has been one of the greatest success stories in the region over the years.

Add some uptown country and tasty oldies to this mix? -- well, you might just have something to keep 'em listening.

Let's wait and see.

I don't see hiring Lauren Pressley as an indication of buying time before a flip. Lauren has been known to do talk radio in the past also.

I can imagine how the locals feel. First WBUD, and now this...

Perhaps a non-spoken word format would be the best option since it appears nobody can compete with NJ 101.5...

i do not know her. i just know a guy who knows her, and he used to be on the radio there.

whatever the case may be, they have done a horrible job programming that station for the last 4-5 years, at the very least.

they had decent ratings a few years ago, and now they're in the tank.

i doubt it's sports talk because from what i am told they do not pay enough money to anyone or make enough money either. paying sports people to compete against wfan and espn radio would not be good for them. it has to be something cheap i would think.

If it was going to play music country would make sense since there is a void in that format.

I even remember you on WCTC, Rich! Also, what about Michael Jay, Ron Miskoff, Bob Thomas and Nick Hutak amongst others? Even the newscasters were great: Walt Sodie, Lee Shirvanian, Fred Fishkin, etc. I am surprised you did not mention all of these dynamic personalities.

All of these are heavyweight names who worked at a terrific local radio station in central NJ during a wonderful era to listen! What great listening memories!

Dear Cal & Radio-Info friends,

How kind of you, Cal, to remember my WCTC exploits! Your comments should teach me once and for all not to try writing at a time of day/night when I should stick to reading and listening - that’s what leads to omitting important people, and you’ve mentioned some greats. I was hired on as Chief Writer in the early ‘70s and did highly anonymous commercial voice-over work for the station. Interesting that you should mention Nick, for I was first heard live on the station filling in for Nick on “The Muse.” I am pleased to see you bring back the names of WCTC News greats. Don’t forget Ron Reisman and his twisted sense of humour, Karen Stamm and the remarkable News Director who was in place when I came on board -- Edmund Scott, who, indeed, was one of Murrow’s Boys! There were GIANTS in those days! Every once in awhile, Eddie would let me sit in and read a 5-minute summary for him. As my British friends would say, I was “dead chuffed!” I’ll never forget the night that I was mooned, live on the air from the next studio by a newsreader, and I flatly refuse to admit who it was; but, I searched my record files and played “There’s A Moon Out Tonight,” immediately with an appropriate dedication! Anybody out there remember the remarkable Bob Huse, (a great air talent and big band aficionado) one-time WCTC P.D., who was a polio survivor and would climb up those treacherous flights of stairs to the 3rd floor of 385 George Street every night on aluminium crutches carrying a satchel full of LPs? The story is fondly remembered of the night Bob was followed up the stairs by a couple of young punks who cornered him at his desk, then turned tail and ran when Bob pinned one of the little SOBs to the wall with his crutch! Then, there was the fiercely talented Michael Jay whom I always thought I would see credited as writer/creator of a top-notch sitcom somewhere. What a funny man! Of course, Ron M. and Bob T. and countless other great talents along with our wonderful listening audience and clients are fondly remembered, too; and, let's not forget Archie the Roach, big enough to saddle-up and ride to Highland Park whom we finally trapped one night under an inverted drinking glass! The office staff’s screams the next morning were priceless!

WCTC is strong only in the towns that end in "Brunswick". The 1450 in Atlantic City has a much bigger signal, going up the Jersey shore and covering all of Long Island in the day.

regardless what people are saying 1450 wctc will not go country because in order for them to do that they have to have a very strong signal which 1450 wctc does not if wctc does anything in the near future it will be running satellite programing and pre recorder shows but for them to go country is completely out of the question

don't really know anything about the station but radio-locator's map has them putting out a pretty decent signal, even into NYC. But radio-locator's maps aren't always the most true:

I defy you to pick that station up on Rt. 1 in Brunswick, let alone NYC.

Blue is fringe.

In the daytime hours, WCTC comes in very well throughout most of Staten Island. Even in the southwestern part of Brooklyn, they're pretty listenable.

Believe it or not, their daytime signal goes pretty far in the northern direction. You can still get them up in parts of Sussex County, up near Franklin along Route 23.

you're probably right if the type of programming they're going to go with is the stuff theyve been putting out there the last few years.

NJ could use a good talk station but it looks like they're not going to be it.

I live in Jersey City and there is no hint of WCTC here. I used to live in New Brunswick and from my experience WCTC and WMGQ 98.3 have similar coverage areas and fade out quickly anywhere north of Linden.
