WDAE now on FM

he's saying we(corporate radio) blocked an LPFM rollout. Actually "religion" did it before we ever could since they got most of the LPFM licenses that were out there years ago....

Easy answer Cedric, to block the roll-out of LPFM by corporate radio.

Uhhhh...the translator in question is owned by Clear Channel, so how does that apply?

Yeah, CC already owned those translators, so they were already blocking other companies. All I'm saying is that they're cluttering the dial with formats that are already well served in the market. I admire Rig's passion and exuberance for broadcasting, but how can you be so proud of a corporate behemoth using FCC loopholes to compete with another corporate behemoth, by playing a bunch of worn out music. How many different stations have to be broadcasting the same song at the same time before it's too damn much?

This translator experiment is simultaneously cool and distressing. It's cool to hear more signals on the dial, but it'd be nice if they were relaying an underserved format, or relaying a station that REALLY has serious signal issues. To me, this just seems like a bunch more of the same boring crap that is making people wanting to turn their radios off in the first place. If memory serves me correctly, before they flipped 95.3 to WDAE, wasn't it "relaying" WBTP which is on the same tower? Someone correct me on this if I'm mistaken.

It cracks me up when "consultants" like Kabrich et al. scratch their heads and wonder why terrestrial radio is dying... it's because the CC's and Cox's in this country have fired all the jocks, and let some guy like Riggy automate all the stations. Then they add a bunch of translators to make the broadcast band even more redundant and stupid, and cheap out the playlist to a handful of songs that people won't turn their radios on to hear. Let it not be said that we weren't warned, Bob Lassiter told us this would happen almost 20 years ago.

it's was a religious station on that translator. "let some guy like riggy automate the stations"..that's a good one. I'm NOT automating anything I am simply putting forth my efforts to make it a better & unique station. I'm not here to make a bunch of "board posters" happy about anything. We're playing plenty of stuff the Eagle, & Q105 aren't playing around here. The Ramones, Grateful Dead (more than just one song) and others we're platooning in all the time. By most of the post I see here most of you clearly don't listen to anything for prolonged periods and you just rail against it cause you're not a part of it. This business is also a game and I am here to win. I'll use whatever tools I/we can get our hands on to make us broader and stronger period. If you wouldn't..that might be why you ride the pine.

Now back to our regularly scheduled bitch and moan fest.... :p

They were all religious translators obviously. Radio-locator has been listing 95.3 as one of the Beat's translators for awhile now, that's what I was going by.

You're right, you're not automating it. It's already automated and you and some people in NY voicetrack it. If you really have any creative control, then I'd like to hear you get on there and play ONE SONG I haven't already heard ten thousand times. For what it's worth, most of the people who post here either work in, or have worked in the market. The reason why they have a "bitch and moan" fest is because they've obviously already spent prolonged periods of time listening, and it's prompted them to bitch.

well for one I just played "I like to Rock" from April Wine just a couple of nights ago. Change of Heart from Tom Petty which I couldn't tell you the last time I ever played that. If you have worked in radio for any amount of time, I shouldn't have to say this, of course you'd be tired of the product. You listen day in and day out to the same old thing..duh. Spend some time with your audience and learn how they use you and you'll understand why we play a power 40 times a week. We're a part of their life. They use us off and on throughout their day/week. They don't listen for hours upon hours. There may be a few passionate P1's that will try but the majority don't. Our business isn't about US..it's about them. My job is to make sure when they are spending time with radio it's with US.

I won't rain on Rigger's parade since I'm outside the listening range off all three of CC's offshoots. I will side with the folks that believe that LPFM's should be for community or neighborhood radio that isn't able to break through or be represented by the corporate stations. Let the formats featuring an extra Tom Petty or Grateful Dead tune be displayed on the HD spectrum.

I would much prefer hearing ***any*** of these commercial operations vs. Reach and the like gospel huxter/clown translators spewing forth their false beliefs. And that it's a "unique" feed vs. a simulcast, and commercial-free is a plus. I leave Thunder on when I'm at work for the dog (he used to listen to 970 WFLA but was becoming increasingly cynical, bitter Right Winger, demanding I vet shop Oxy's, and schedule him on flights to the Dominican Republic to meet other younger dogs of the same sex). So, Thunder works well in this transition therapy. The Starkey Rd. translator booms in at my home, which is between Clearwater and Larghetto.

My only beef is wanting to hear more deep cuts. I just heard "Dreamboat Annie" (title track from said album) by Heart (when Heart were good, penned most of their own songs, and Ann wasn't phat) on S-XM Deep Tracks, for instance. I played it to death in '76 and '77 on my wax copy, but can't say I've heard it terrestrial since probably the late '70's.

Suppose I should have clarified, by neighborhood or local I meant information, maybe tines if you can afford the rights fees, high school sports etc., not snake oil or doom and gloom prophets.

Ok, leaving downtown Clearwater tonight I was unable to hear any of these translators until I got to the Bayside Bridge. All three stations were getting blasted out by tropo. Even after I could see the big freestanding tower on Gandy, 95.3 was still getting crushed by the tropo. Meanwhile 620 came in crystal clear all the way home... whatever.

I'll say it again. It makes no sense whatsoever to retransmit WDAE on 95.3 without at least putting it on one of the full power HD2s. I would like Big Rig to tell me why 103.5 HD2 is still operating as Thunder while 100.7 HD2 is clearly the driver for 94.5 and 105.9. I'm not understanding the logic. Do us HD radio people a favor and put WDAE on 103.5 HD2 before some community translator.

I live in Manatee County and having any translator is a waste to me.... I can p/u WDAE, WHNZ and most of the time WFLA (Although I used to pick it up better before their so called upgrade..). I realize that none of the so called Tampa Bay area stations really give a damn about us to the south, but let me remind you all, that Manatee County DOES have direct contact with Tampa Bay itself and is closer and more Tampa Bay area than Polk , Pasco or Hernando Counties....

Bill you will see shortly why there is still thunder on the 1035. am not allowed to discuss that here.

There have been signs out there that CC may be getting ready to do some pretty significant realignment in some markets. One of the factors might be that conservative talk has been in a ratings free-fall since the election. Moving and reinventing news/talk formats could produce chain reactions as they come up with new ways to balance their 18-34 and 25-54 targeted formats.

I see DAE adding the other translators when 98.7 further grows in the ratings. However the question is what is more important to cc....Rock or sports...

I think you're right about the translators.

Ponder this though. What if 98.7 isn't going to grow that much more in the ratings? 98.7 was pulling 2's with an adult CHR format. What if this incarnation of 98.7 fails to achieve that? You'd think with all the money they're spending on promotions, they'd be beating 620 by now...

Another thought. Since this is all about $$$, I have to assume CBS thought they'd make more money with sports than with chick music. I don't know if I agree, especially considering the ratings so far. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of their sales office right now.

First, you are not seeing men 25-54, which is the only number that really matters in this case. That's closer than the 6+ because DAE has more 55+ listeners right now. Also, The DAE 6+ numbers benefit from long time spent listening to the Rays games, cume is closer.

Second, sports makes more money than music, with or without ratings, and you pay no music royalties, which saves up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are so many small sponsorship opportunities that aren't there in music formats, plus typically more remote options as well. Plus it's after a whole different demo. There's a lot less competition for men in the market (Eagle, Bone, 98 Rock, DAE) than for women (Dove, Magic, Mix, FLZ, Q105, Hot, the Beat, Wild). FLA and Country are more balanced male-female. But you're going to make more money as the 5th station in Men (because a lot of agency buys are 5 stations deep) than you are as the 9th station in women.
