WDBJ

It's like pretty much all of the small to mid market CBS affiliates in the Southeast: A heritage station with a folksy, non-offensive, all about God, country & mom delivery. Not that it's a bad thing: if it works, why mess with it?

I don't find WDBJ to be particularly folksy or non-offensive, but I do think their news department is way over-rated. It seems to me they have too many anchors (who NEVER report) and too few reporters. It is amazing to me the percentage of stories on their newscasts that are nothing but read copy--not even any pictures. WDBJ has a lot of sparkle (beautiful news set, pretty anchors) but little substance. WSLS, on the other hand, is much more aggressive in the field, but can never win with their terrible news set, and somebody really should do something with the anchors' hair. WSET is not even worth talking about--truly small market TV in a medium market and yes, all about God and country. BTW, WDBJ is not the heritage station, having come on third, several years after WSET and WSLS. And how is TV news in large market (#36) upstate SC?

As a New York Yankees shirt I bought a friend of mine once said "SCOREBOARD"...I can use that to describe WDBJ's news in the ratings. Somewhere around 30 years of dominance, and WSLS/WSET changing the set and it's anchors won't matter at all. DBJ's product has always looked local...not like every other cast in the country. Folksy isn't the term I'd use, I'd say DBJ knows what works for it's audience and doesn't change it after every down book.

BTW: DBJ (and) SLS both have new News Direcotrs, but I'm sure the results will be the same. Let's have this discussion again in 30 years.

'DBJ may have been the last VHF on in the market (WSLS was the first), but with a CBS affiliation, they soon came to dominate the local news race. And, it wasn't all that long ago that WLVA/WSET's signal was not on a par with 7 & 10, as they broadcast at the time from Johnson Mtn on the Bedford-Campbell county line.

As big as the Roanoke-Lynchburg market is, well area wise anyway, I am surprised that at least one of them hasn't gone the chopper route yet. To me that is a bit odd.

After all many much smaller markets have at least one station that uses them.

Their new ND Amy Morris seems to be cleaning things up. Still can't get Leo Hirsbrunner to say "meteorologist" or his own name correctly, but the morning 'casts seem to be pretty tight.
