WDBO Moves Clark Howard To Late Nights

From what I've always understood, the FCC LEGAL ID rule is that the call letters and city of license must be said together. You can say anything you want, before, or after, the call letters and city of license. For example, you could say "Central Florida's News/Talk Leader, FM 96.5 and AM 580 WDBO, Orlando!" or FM 96.5 WDBO, Orlando - Central Florida's News-Talk-Traffic and Weather Authority!" In any case, that's how I hear it being done.

Yes, Rush is on WOKV in Jacksonville, a Cox station. But it's a totally different situation in Orlando. Clear Channel operates a large News/Talk competitor in O-Town, while it doesn't in Jax. (At this point, the only AM they have here is 930 WFXJ, a Sports station). I'm sure someone will have the answer to this question: Was Rush EVER on WDBO? If he was, I would assume, that some time ago, Clear Channel in Orlando must have determined, it was in their best interest to have Rush on AM 540. And since Clear Channel owns Rush's distributor, Premier, that might have been a factor in their favor. Meanwhile in Jacksonville, WOKV has enjoyed a long association with Rush, they were one of his early affiliates, have maintained great ratings, and, I would suppose, excellent revenue, from that long standing relationship.

Rush was on WDBO from 1991 till about 1997 when 540 WFLF was born.

The letter of the law says you have to identify each station separately.

"WDBO, Orlando. WDBO-FM, Orlando."

In practice, the FCC has almost always turned a blind eye to "WDBO AM & FM, Orlando."

What's interesting is that with an extra hour of Boortz and the addition of Clark Howard as Rush's replacement, DBO still beat 540 pretty soundly.
 
Can't be any worse than Boston, where CC's "Rush Radio Talk 1200" has been beaten handily despite having Rush on their roster...

Anyone think 540's deficit to WDBO-AM/FM would look less bleak once they get their FM translator up and running?
 
The legal ID is always call letters followed by city of license with only two exceptions. The frequency and / or licensee name, as it appears on the station license, may be inserted between call letters and city of license.

Example: "WDBO 580 AM (in the case of an AM, the term "AM" comes after the frequency since the legal call letters are "WDBO" and not WDBO-AM" Note: AM stations never are issued any call letter combination with the suffic "AM") and WDBO-FM 96.5 (in this case where the call letters are shared, the legal call letters of the FM is "WDBO-FM" so in this case the frequency follows "FM") Orlando" or "WDBO-580 AM and WDBO-FM 96.5, Cox Radio, Inc., Orlando"

Aside from frequency and licensee name, the legal ID must be call letters immediately followed by COL with no other exceptions.
 
Obviously Mel just didn't work out. She was brash and trying to be local while broadcasting from Boston. Just doesn't work. Clark was a welcome break from all the political-bashing talk that Rush, Neil, Sean, etc., do. The only time I would listen to WDBO is for a while in the morning for the local news, etc., and Clark. The rest of the time I'm on SiriusXM 82.

I always liked working with Clark when he came to town to broadcast from the WDBO studio. He is a very likeable guy, and easy to work with. Clark's show is a great break from all the political talk of the day, and you actually learn useful information you can apply to your everyday life. :)

I'm happy WDBO is moving him back to where he belongs!
