WDJO: Does anyone care anymore?

Sniff & the Tears on, Really?

The odd thing is, I really like the new playlist. It compares quite favorably w/Mary Peale on 'NKU. Moody Blues, Bob Marley, Joe Simon, etc. MUCH MUCH less Beach Boys.

LOTS of good music (Drowning in the Sea of Love) 'cause there aren't very many advertisers. I had a prof back at CCM who said if you can't make any money during an election year you're in real trouble.

I have to listen in the car or online, even tho' I work like 6 miles from the tower.

Is anyone else listening? Does anyone care? Is anyone aware of the RADICAL change in what they're playing?

Johnny I've seen numbers since Arbitron embargoed them and WDJO is doing better or just as well as they did playing the older stuff. They have better numbers than WSAI and WQRT.
So, yes. They do care and they are listening.

It's a shame they couldn't apply for a FM translator. I know we're probably maxed out here in the market so that won't happen.

Not necessarily true microbob. You'd be surprised at what can be squeezed in. Whether that's good or bad will be determined by the marketplace.

You need the money to buy a translator or put one up somewhere. I don't see any money here. If they had someone partner with them that had money a translator could be a good idea. But then I'd be really careful getting involved with WDJO. Just one man's opinion.

As a listener, I'm done with them. Their new playlist sounds like "classic oldies" on poor AM. They have lost many of their original listeners and if Rodger thinks he can compete with the big FM's then he is operating with the theory of confused thinking. The lawsuits, the loss of Dusty, and the bad PR has killed them with many devoted, former, listeners. Sad. I have no idea anymore what audience they are even targeting. Does anyone.

Yes, FRR they do know what audience they are targeting. It's not really that hard to figure out. The loss of a DJ hasn't hurt their numbers at all and only the geeks on this board know or care about the other stuff you mentioned. You can probably share with us some other oldies lovers who have stopped listening, but Arbitron tells a different story. Sounds a lot like all of the anger directed toward WGRR when they moved away from Oldies. And look at them now. Consistent Top 5 winner. The fact that WDJO continues to get numbers comparable to their "oldies" days proves they're doing the right thing and it's probably easier to sell.

Is Rodger even involved anymore?

'DJO-Does Anyone Care AnyMore-Part II

Probably not. Once again this morning, the IMUS signal was dropping out for one or two seconds, every 30 seconds. During the program and commericals. It's is like nobody is minding the store. And what has happened to Roger K? Has he given up on his radio station like so many other individuals within the past few years?

As an oldies fan I will always be true to 50s and 60s rock and pop...but (as much as I hate to say this) 50s and 60s teens now respectively in their 70s and 60s are no longer looked upon as a viable adverting target.

It's sad to see WDJO do such radical things as changing its logo and jingles, adding Imus after the departure of Peter Noone (who is much better off doing the oldies concert circuit)...and the loss of Dusty Rhodes, who was the station's biggest asset.

Not your fault Mr. Rhodes.

As have been stated before what part of "if it works, don't fix it" isn't english?

Dusty,we miss you on WDJO and the heart you have put into the music of our generation for so many decades....you WERE WDJO. We miss you on the air...therefore I am promoting your website hoping that many stations will continue to air your Christmas program (and hopefully more oldies-related projects) along with newer affilliates:

Keep rockin' Trusty Dusty!

What's next for 50s/60s/early 70s oldies now? ....Public radio?
(paging WNKU and repeaters....think about it NKU...please!)

I have a theory that 50s/60s music will soon replace the 40s big band/swing on little public stations like WMKV, WOBO, etc. WMKV is owned by a retirement community, in the next few years the rock and roll demographic will swell and demand for that music will grow accordingly. I don't think that music will disappear from the dial for a long time.

I mainly listen to internet-only radio sites and low power FM now, but I still tune in WDJO now and then. I never thought I'd see the day when Dayton was better for oldies than Cincinnati.

Hey I have to say I am very happy with Dan Allen on Iheart's Realoldies station. I have the chance to hear the old sounds just as I was so used to hearing them on 1480 WDJO. I have even enjoyed listening to Marty Thompson doing cartoons again at 5pm like he used to do on the FM station. I just hope that all of the old fans of this format please support it so it wont go away again, maybe forever. Thanks to Dan Allen, Marty Thompson and Bobby Leach for keeping the old sound going.

Don't get me wrong WDJO new music selection is different but I still prefer the older format.

I agree. I enjoy these fellows on Iheart and hope they stay around for a long time. I really don't care about WDJO and their "new format" or the fact that they seem to have lost direction. I think most of us "oldsters" that love this music will simply rely on their Ipods and MP3 players and forget about commercial radio.

I don't MIND it..after all, music from the 70s is forty years old now and if that ain't old I don't know what is. <I know, I know, but the average listener doesn't parse the definition of "oldies" the way we do>

Plus, as long as they've got Imus, they are my in-car station of choice.

I'm not really enjoying the obscure stoner crap but it's usually one song and then back to the hits. I can deal with it.

Listener preferences are always interesting to study. I still park the Sirius satellite on the 60's channel. The 70's one has too many Captain and Tennillee and Carpenters songs.... YUK.

Mythbuster, you talk about DJO's numbers as being "better or the same as" real oldies days. Since they never got above a 1.0 share, that ain't saying much. I like what they are playing, but you aren't going to sell ads with this "format". Since the music shift and the macho positioning, the ads are still the same four or five they have always had.

The change has more to do a legal dodge than any kind of concept shift.

Actually, back when we were buying the Arbitron and they were on 1160, we saw a couple of 1.2 and 1.1 overall ratings.
