WDOK vs. The Wave

I've been listening to WDOK this week, and notice that they've been playing more hotter & harder tunes. For instance, they played "Forget You" from Cee-Lo Green before The J. Geils Band's "Centerfold." I've also heard "Let The Music Play" by Shannon before commercial. It seems that the once "soft rocker" has now gone in a different direction. So much I wouldn't call it Soft AC.

I'm thinking they're becoming more upbeat since The Wave is coming with a softer approach that WDOK once offered. I'm also wondering if the adjustment is made knowing a competitor is coming. I can see more people switching their offices from 'DOK to The Wave. This could be a rivalry to watch in 2012.

WDOK is becoming more of just an AC station, period.

They're picking up some stuff that got left behind when "Mix" turned into the "Lake", and that Q 104 is leaving behind since they're playing newer stuff to try to snag some "Kiss" ears.

With that, I don't think 102 will ever completely abandon their Soft AC heritage...you'll still hear Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, etc. But they're expanding the playlist a bit, so to call them a pure Soft AC would be misleading.

The Wave with their Smooth AC format (Soft AC with a little Urban AC) will get some ears that are looking for some soft stuff, but I don't think they'll overtake DOK.

I see what you mean. Hearing the selection of music did have a "Mix" feel to it. It just appears to be a different version than before. Sounds like WDOK is becoming Mainstream AC.

While The Wave won't overtake 'DOK, it might do better than most of 107.3's time as a AAA station, and pick up listeners turned off by 102.1's new approach. I won't mind both though.

A key word in this discussion might be "different". Different music -vs- softer or more like WDOK used to be. Not necessarily softer tempo/texture.

A previous poster is correct: WDOK began to "young up" a bit over a year ago....it's been a transition. WDOK has done with their core music what many traditional classic rock stations have done: changed music a bit to try to move their audience about one demo cell younger. Doing so has been a pretty common format modification all over the country in the past year or so.

Just noticed that the jocks on WDOK's page are missing, and they're not heard on the station this week either.

I'm wondering if changes really are being made...

Nancy Alden had been at WDOK since 1987... only WNCX's Bill Louis holds an equal record for longevity at one station.

I'm told other dominoes at both stations are likely set to fall at any moment. This is apparently a multi-market deal on CBS Corp.'s end... their San Diego stations might be suffering a similar fate.

Could it be that 923TheFan is expensive to run, and they had to find that $$$ somewhere in the cluster?

If 102 & 104 could cut staff....how safe are local hosts at WNCX?

Nathan is apparently correct. A guy I know of in San Diego at CBS was let go today...no replacement (VTing or network).

Trapper Jack will probably be the only live air personality left at 102.1 much like WKDD only has one live show as well. Live radio is dying for music formats.

Meanwhile, RCRG has "soft launched" the new Wave Smooth AC format tonight, presumably from West Market Street. I've heard a couple of Lynn Kelly tracks.

Could it be possible that some Q voices are headed to DOK, as it appears they're going to a "80s, 90s, and now" approach, while Q gets some younger talent as they're more "2K and today"?

I mean, it you're not renewing Nancy Alden while also dumping Delilah, that (to me any way) is a clear indication of 102 updating both their staff and "motif".

As a domino effect from this...any chance the Wave picks up Delilah?

Q is probably gearing up to go full-fledged CHR against Kiss. 'DOK already sounds more "conservative Hot AC" than AC these days.

Delilah on The Wave?

Why on earth would they want to do that????

Music-intensive formats are that way for a reason: that's what most listeners want....the, ahhhhh: MUSIC!

I seriously doubt millions and millions of Americans are sitting at home dreaming about listening to young, talented "air personalities". They wanna hear: MUSIC.

Want to hear people talking on the radio? Go to your nearest all-news, news-talk, talk, or sportstalk station. Bet you won't hear much music on those stations. Wonder why? Duh!

Delilah on WNWV is NOT happening, period. NOT happening. And it makes no sense for RCRG to pick her up.

Well, I guess she will be persona non-grata in Cleveland (unless someone else goes Soft AC or DOK has a change of heart).

Just looked at the comments on their web site and they are NOT ammused with the changes. They all seem to think that Trapper is gone. I didn't listen this morning so I don't know about that but they are mad!
