Does anyone else think they are toning down the harder stuff

They sound like they mostly did last year and earlier. Lots of B.J.Thomas, Anne Murray, Helen Reddy, some Sinatra, Manilow------but I haven't heard any Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel (except his softest stuff), Creedence, Al Green, any old school R&B except for stuff like Brooke Benton and Gladys Knight. I wonder if the tip toe into classic hits with Gerry Rafferty, Carlos Santana, Don Henley, Boy George, etc was a test to get listener feed back or a daring experiment by Cox that went terribly wrong. ???

Actually I thought the Dove was getting more interesting and it also seemed the Eagle was playing longer cuts and edging into classic rock. I thought the Dove was getting more current along with WPOI moving into the 90's.

Its all about trial and error. Radio stations test out different music all the time. A good example is WXGL venturing into Classic Rock. Which is change indeed considering being "Soft Rock" as 1073 The Bay. I remember a time eariler in the year when WPOI was playing "Jungle Life" by Tarzan. As well as "Puttin on the Ritz" and even " A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran. Only heard those songs last spring and not since. I uessing they didn't get good feedback with some of those songs.

I believe with WDUV being one of the Highest Rated stations in the South nothing will change too much. Cox has it down pat with WDUV. Heck Cox even released a similar "Easy Listening" station in Miami.

107.3 had John Mellencamp as the artist that sang "I need a Lover" on the RDS.

That station is sooooo beatable.

That is true. Our area needs a Classic Hits station that actually can lable the music it plays. One of the reasons our market needs a replacment. LOL I still miss Thunder 103.5. Played a lot of good Classic Rock. The Bone wasn't too bad before they went Grunge.

Could the short lived foray into classic hits be over on WDUV in order that Cox can use the same music on WDUV and Easy 93.1 in Miami?

I see a time when a station in Tampa and co-owned in Miami and Orlando, will have a playlist that will be simulcast. The computer can be programmed in San Antonio and located in Wyoming.

It would be the musical equivalent to what the talk stations are doing.

I'm not certain it is not already happening.

Many religious broadcasters such as Bible Broadcasting Network and Moody Broadcasting Network ARE already doing just that with their owned full powered stations, translators and satellators. Programming orginates from Charlotte for BBN and Chiicago for Moody with nothing local on any of the network owned stations.

And Clear Channel was doing it for a while too. It caused a few stations to be de-listed from reporting status since the playlists were identical to other reporting sister stations. I don't think they're doing it now but the one in Florida that comes to mind was Z-100 Ft. Myers following the exact same playlist as 93.9 MIA in Miami. It wasn't a simulcast but the same playlist being loaded into the computer.

Why aren't any of the commercial stations doing it?

A few commercial operators are already engaged in this type operation.

By way of example, and on a much smaller scale than the BBN and Moody examples previously given, in the Ocala / Gainesville market there is WNDD-FM Ocala that provides 100% programming content to two additional stations - WNDT-FM Gainesville and WNDN-FM Chiefland. Neither WNDT nor WNDT provides any seperate or local programming to each respective community of license. All programming content originates from the flagship station - WNDD-FM.

Additionally, ESPN Radio affiliate WMOP-AM Ocala provides 100% programmingc content to co-owned WGGG-AM Gainesville.

By de-listing, I assume you mean by the record companies, not the ratings services.

There is "specialty" shows, Tom Kent, Delilah, countdowns, etc. But those are "baby sitter" shows.
Isn't the computer not capable of running a tight board? Or is it the consistency of spot timing.
Is it that not all spot loads are the same? Is it just the logistics don't work in practice? Or is it the 6th sense, picked up by the listener, where the real problem is?

I have not heard Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Santana, The Eagles, or any of the classic hits stuff they were playing before Christmas. Does anybody really know what Cox is doing ?

oops

I heard Wilson Picketts "Midnight Hour" a couple of days ago, right after their VO guy delivered his liner in a style that should be reserved for funeral home announcements. Just a little shock to the system.....
