Everyone is invited to the Buckeye Media Hut this weekend to sign our petition asking KFWhyEye never to use Barry Markson when the Nearly Bald One has a hangnail and can't do his 7-10am shift. blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah....even more annoying than our many of our posts on this list! Free bobble head dolls of the Middle Eastern Men of The Media to the first 100 people who show up with a KAZG bumper sticker!

Yes! I head a bit today and it was painful, Michelle is terrible and is even worse when Markson is on.

But, when I am driving, (in the east valley) my radio is stuck to 105.1 because its the best thing on the radio....

Oh, and I just heard that after many months of hard work, Matt Gerson is done with his book! He managed to keep his crayons sharp and colored inside the lines!

Okay folks, it's time to really get things going on the board. Most of you aren't nearly the visionary that I am and therefore I know that this topic will generate more response than ANYTHING.

On what date will the first 100° day of 2010 occur? By the way, I have dibs on May 11th. DISCUSS!

Paging Ed Phillips...

I'm going to have to go for a date even earlier than that. I'm thinking April 24th will be the 1st 100 degree day. Not only that, it will be 102 degrees that day all due to this high pressure system that will come up from Baja California and raise temperatures for the entire weekend!

Paging Gumpdusky insider catfish (with a "C"): do you have any Lumberyard 1440
bumper stickers you could part with? I'm sure Akbar will even accept remainders
from previous stock...KDOT...KOPA...KXAM...even KPOK or KWBY!

Don't forget Preston Westmoreland too!

If anyone is brave enough to create a KAZG bumper sticker, I'll take one! My starting bid is 51 cents. I can see the bumper sticker now, "KAZG Happens!"

The one Nurse Czarina Jeff and I like best is: KAZG Doesn't Keep You Up At Night!

Hey wait a minute....this thread is supposed to be about shaking things up and creating excitement. Let's take the design of the KAZG bumper sticker to "A Day In The Life Of A Lamptimer" and leave this topic to comments about those nifty KT'R billboards with Dave Ramsey saying "Act Your Wage"!

Lauren'll get there-sooner that later, I'm bettin'. Since I'm at work by 6:00 am,I can only listen to middle -of- the -road office type stuff like KEZ and KYOT, but they do seem to be jazzing THEM up a bit compared to a few months ago. Barry Young and Bill Handel ARE the bestshows on KFYI, KDM. I'm noticing something interesting on KTAR, Joe Crummey is loosening up A LOT-every other word he says is "man", he makes reference to his pot-smokin' days more, he's added a new "after hours" spot for when "family time" is over. He's almost starting to remind me in some ways of Duke Shirlaw, with a flip of a coin he can be like Roy Rogers or Hunter S. Thompson.

I'm probably going to check out KTAR again tod-MONDAY and see what's going on. I haven't listened for a long while, and I normally don't listen to talk radio on Fiesta Friday's.. or Saturday's. Actually I haven't listened to much radio in general this past week.

While we're still within topic of discussion, before I get back to "the exciting things", I have a strange question to ask; Does anyone have any clips of the 2002-2004 Newstalk 1010 news breaks when they did the names of the talk show hosts (Tony Snow*Neal Bortz*Terri Gilberg*Rusty Humphries*Michael Savage*NewsTalk 1010)? I know I'm missing that guy who did his show about coins or gold coins, but I can't remember his name. I believe he was between either Terri and Rusty or Neal and Terri. I doubt anyone would have a clip of this sort, but thought I'd ask anyway, just in case.

Since you brought up KT'R, and I'm guessing you're referring to snooze/talk
92/3 and not Sports Parking Lot 620...

Early this morning, channels 5 and then 10 had the "grocery strike averted"
story around 6:10, while channel 12 got around to it about 6:15. (I don't
know when 3 and 15 got on it.)

So what was KT'R doing?

At 6:16 (even though they said it was 6:15*) it was time for sports! Oooh...
I guess their PBP franchises are more important than "breaking news," or maybe
they just don't want to upset their format wheel.

Next at 6:20 ("a little past 6:19") it was Deputy Dan and whatever passes for
Mr. Ed these days with WX.

Finally at 6:22--the grocery strike story. On Arizona's news leader.

Whew! I'm surprised we didn't have to wait through Michael Dixon's movie
review and who knows what else before they aired the story. ::)

*: Closed circuit for Network Ned and Cosmic Connie...you're air signal is on
an 18-second delay from real time. Could you try to compensate for it
in your time checks? Or will that also upset the format wheel?

You can't text, google, IM, Tweet, stream......when you drive to work. Maybe there is tooo many niche stations. Maybe there is tooo many corporate whores more worried about ratings and debt service than the communities they service. Radio invented Arbitron, the FCC (to some extent), media buyers, listeners, broadcast manufacturers etc...
Nobody loved looking to see what Dr. Akbar, KDM7000 or The Jim Sharpe had to post more than me in the past but I have to force myself to look here once a month every now and than.
Commercial Radio has to re-invent itself NOW! I know we have all heard it before...I know it is never going to happen in Phx, NY, LA or DC first, but somebody(owner) is going to have to show some balls without worrying about his next 3 books. To think a PD would be ecstatic over a 2 share rating twenty years ago was unthinkable. I'm a conservative who can't stand Rush Limbaugh, Hannity or Beck. They BORE me. I'm a former CE who could write their copy today with yesterdays headlines. I know the current music scene sucks. When the sales manager at a mid to large market radio station has to clean the bathrooms at night before he goes home than it's time for a change. I have never felt like an old man until I posted this here! Stay of my Lawn.....

I will MOSTLY agree here. Terrestrial radio needs to reinvent itself in a very substantial way, unfortunately it just won't happen. Most people in middle and upper management in the radio business are too egocentric (or perhaps just in denial) to realize that their audiences are fading, their product has become mostly stale and people are rapidly seeking alternative media sources. I've talked about this dozens of times on this (and other) forum and I'm generally met with dismissive attitudes; "Oh, our data shows that cumes are in the ninety percentile range and that total-time-spent-listening is about what it was 20 years ago"... that's the architect of the Titanic telling you it can't sink.

The one minor point I'll disagree with is that a 2 share today isn't what a 2 share was 30 years ago. In Phoenix, for example, there were 1/4th the radio stations 30 years ago and a MUCH smaller population, therefore top rated stations had 10 or 15 shares... you'll never see that for a station's overall rating anymore here as there are just too many stations, mind you a 2-share isn't really acceptable to anyone except for maybe KPHX--I'm sure they would throw a victory parade down Central Avenue if they achieved such a triumph... Hell, if they pulled a 1-share they should consider themselves lucky!

This is beautiful! The truth inserted in here is just so beautiful to me! As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to have to print it out many copies and send them out as gifts this Holiday season so everyone could see how beautiful this is!

OH - and by the way, I'm most likely going to take this topic a bit further and dig deeper into this issue at a later time, so be on the lookout for more to come on this.

Well, It's pretty clear that nothing exciting is going on here, especially when I find myself in the Atlanta section wondering why their urbans and top 40's are playing George Jones..
http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=35&topic=157159.new;topicseen#new

As much as I wish for some excitement, I should keep in mind the old saying "be careful what you wish for" and be thankful that things in Phoenix are pretty much so stable that it all seems boring.

I guess the new sound of Movin, along with their new "attack ads" against Mix 96.9 are somewhat something to be interested in, but other than that, not much seems to be going on - other than the threat of Christmas music.

SOO!!!

Is anybody doing anything special for Thanksgiving? Any stations mixing? Going back in the day? Doing any special decade of music or "partying it up"? I sure hope we get something on radio that's more exciting than my Zune and Ipod!!!

What if we tried something different for a change?

What if a station that normally doesn't do stuff did something a bit unusual and exciting while working with what they've already got? For example: KPKX did a nonstop mixshow of "the best of everything" all mixed up.. KZZP did a party weekend, featuring the best top 40 hits from the past 20 years, while Mix 96.9 battled them by doing an all request mix weekend, where they'd have random quick mixes that could pop up anytime and people had to be a certain caller when the mix played to win a prize.. or something very unusual like KOOL doing a best of 1960-1990 (with 1985-1990 only being very very recognizable top 5 charting hits) all mixed up? How about two stations from the same company swapping dj's/on-airs/or a part of their staff with the other station and just.... having a little fun?

KMVA would sound very nice if they had an all mix holiday weekend.... playing a lot of uptempo hits & remixes.. along with some "Party" exclusives (if you know what I mean).

How about KNIX? What if KYOT did a chill out-smooth electronica session for a certain part of the holiday weekend, or some Jazzy mash-ups where they mixed Jazz instrumentals under different types of jazzed up hit music?

WOULDN'T IT BE KOOL IF:
KKFR and KZON battled each other out with an intense dj battle, or even more interesting, KOOL and KZON got down with KZON mixing in some good ol' oldies with today's hits, while KOOL mixed in some of today's hits with the old school/oldies beats and instrumentals? Could you imagine how lovely it could be? They could battle to see who'd be the champions... Who'd win.. And who's serves were red-hot!

What if it were just a huge Thanksgiving prize weekend, where some stations had many staff members (and even family) come in, get together, have fun, serve dinner, and just make it a funfilled, party atmosphere weekend with the hosts live on the air, all while doing the prize giveaways?

Anyone have any better fun ideas for ANY station, let me know. As you can see, These are just ideas off the top of my head to get the ideas rolling. I didn't put much thought into these ideas, but figured thinking of anything or something would be better than nothing.

Well... any thoughts and ideas for the Holidays? Say it. Any format change wishes? any wanted format tweaks? You never know which ideas may be seen on the boards and acted upon.

KTAR IS sounding pretty good, by the way. I've been listening.. great shows and topics.. was literally hooked on Mac & Gaydos a few times throughout the week, and there was Joe Crummey thinking outside of the box.

it seems that every example u use suggests some sort of mixshow, which is unheard of on the majority of the stations u mention. The reason stations like Mix969, the Peak and Kool do well in ratings is because they are consistant. Straying away from their format would only piss off their listeners as they don't care about any sort of mixshow. Even on CHR and Rhythmic stations, mixes are heard less which is sad, but people like us are not the majority.
