WECK/Breeze

I generally tune in once in a while out of pure amazement and curiosity. I heard a promo with TWO whole callers demanding that the breeze "stay the same and not change a thing"! I wondered if that was a weeks worth of solicited responses.

In all seriousness, how many actual people, outside of office staff, are listening to this station at any given time during the day?

I no longer live in the area but listen a fair amount in the morning via the internet stream.

Nice to hear Tom Donahue - he does a good job - and the music is a bit different. I hear stuff I haven't heard in a while which is nice for a change.

The FM translator must help them with the "music on AM" bias even though on a decent radio AM sounds fine.

I find myself tuning in to the Breeze more than I do WHTT because WECK has a wider playlist then WHTT and more variety. However, the Breeze signal on 102.9 is extreemly poor and localized. It depends on where I am in the area. Sometimes I pick up WECK and other times it is CKLH out of Hamilton.

Except in Cheektowaga, Depew, Buffalo's east side and Snyder, the AM might as well be a daytimer. WECK gets eaten alive at night in east Lancaster. North of Sheridan drive, the FM translator signal gets swamped by K-Lite in Hamilton. If the FCC ever approves the app to move the 102.7 translator to the top of the HSBC building in Buffalo, it's sure to be highly directional away from Hamilton. Forget about reaching the population centers in the North Towns. The music mix may be different, but different only accounts for so much on those signals. Now, if the music mix was on a Class B, maybe heads would turn and ears would open. If. Maybe. Couldawouldashoulda.

More than are listening to HD radio.
Therefore the projected total number of listeners could be anywhere between 17 and 35?

Be big, be a builder.

"The Breeze" is an alternative for me, when nobody else is playing anything interesting. The music is more than "all over the road". It's not even sure what road it's on. It sounds like the music programming is coming from the GM and his social circle. You know, golf buddies & their wives, client input, and "oh, wow" songs from satellite streams. They make "The Lake" seem like it was focused.

Let's just say that I might hang around for a song or two, but they'll be so far afield by song #3 that I'll be back on the hunt if I'm driving. If I'm not driving, they ain't makin' the cut on the antenna built-in to my tuner.

I appreciate that we're a topic of discussion again on the board. Honest criticism is always welcome. The more pointed and specific, the better. And no, I'm not kidding. Have at it!

How much money would it take to get Howard Stern to give up everything else and come to do a local morning show for WECK?

Of course you'd have to figure Robin, Fred and Gary into the budget.

Responding to your invitation: It seems that between WHLD and WHTT, there's a format void in Buffalo. It's tight. It's increasingly upper demo. It won't last forever. But it exists now. WHTT reverted to Classic Hits because Mix, as well as it was programmed and executed, couldn't break through Buffalo's AC log jam. Teachable moment? Swing 1270 gets a 1.7; WHTT gets a 6.5 Persons 12+. Imagine getting the default listeners of WHLD and WHTT. Perhaps a 2-3 share Persons 12+. Yes, much of that would be in the 55-64 demo. Given your expertise and the experience of your morning personality, it seems a logical format and revenue fit. Just my buck tree 80.

Tom..how about a "Beef on WECK" weekend..with meaty music from the most requested artists all weekend? You could station Donahue on the roof of the building giving away roast beef sandwiches.."BEEF on WECK"

you could "beef up the music" and "Roll" the forgotten favorites all weekend..and even give away little jars of horseradish with custom printed labels..

SLAP ME!

Congratulations to Ron Dombrowski. His Sunday morning polka show on WECK was the only daypart that showed among the top 20 stations in the Winter book, Person 25-54.

Has anyone noticed the new signal, (a powerful translator on top of HSBC?) at 102.9FM in Buffalo? Sounds good and has RDS as WECK. It is even in stereo! Hmmm, does the AM at 1230 broadcast in stereo? If I didn't know better I would say that the AM is now just a simulcast of the FM not the other way around. It has been about 3 weeks or so and it has not been mentioned. Just wondering if it can be received in the Northtowns any better? Possible that the antenna is directional pointed away from Canada?

It has to be somewhat directional; so as not to cut into CKLH (102.9) Hamilton.

I've been listening more since the announcement that they purchased the translator. I must say it sounds a bit weird on FM, can't put my finger on it. Need to listen more in the house vs. car.

The processing is marginal. Some of the songs sound as if they were dubbed from mp3 files or vinyl. There's not much stereo separation. It's directional, null to the north-northwest. Other than that, it's not bad. Be big, be a translator.

Just noticed being able to pick up the FM signal in N.Tonawanda areas, but not in Sanborn or Niagara Falls. Love the music though!

I've enjoyed hearing Kevin O'Connell on the Breeze over the last year - after so many years away from music. His commentary and personal stories relating to the music made a real difference to this listener. I'd swear I heard him on air earlier this week. Hit the button in the car radio yesterday afternoon and Frank Miller? is doing the drive-time show. Anyone on the "inside" know what happened?

Kevin O'Connell told Alan Pergament that he was not renewing his contract with Dick Greene. Apparently, Kevin was looking for a salary increase that Dick was unwilling to meet. Too bad! It was great hearing a radio legend on the air again.

A reliable source reports: Winter 2012, Adults 25-54 and 35-64, M-F, 3-7 PM, WECK didn't make the top 20. Salary increase? Seriously?
