WECK bringin local back

Welcome To the Boys Dorm

Welcome, amfmgirl. Let me get the "usual suspects" ready for you...

HEY, GUYS. GIRL ON THE FLOOR!

Stop scratching yourself and put a shirt on, please. Close your door if you haven't cleaned in a while - or ever.

Re: My hands are where they should be!

;)Thanks for the welcome. Rest assured my hands are on the keyboard and I'm amply clothed as the temperature is about 20 right now.

It seems as if this board gets rather dirty despite where one's hand are from time to time. I'll chime in when you guys are getting to surly and your ready to reach out to your feminine side!

Pleasure to meet you all!

???

What happened to the rule about no ladies on the floor? And how did this dorm get a Women RA?

Re: Welcome To the Boys Dorm

Brad Riter?

Is having him on 6-9PM really going to amount to anything?

WGR is so identified with sports AND they are the Sabres station.

How can he compete?

Brad is a pretty engaging host and I think he did a more than respectable job at WGR. IMHO, Brad starts at WECK at a perfect time as WGR had been floating people in-and-out of the 7pm+ shift since he was fired, and now ex-WIVB-TV sports guy Dennis Williams has been moonlighting in that slot at WGR now fairly regularly.

Competition is a good thing and yes WGR is THE Sabres station, but there is more to sports than just covering the Sabres, and unfortunately their season may just come to an end rather shortly.

Here's where somebody doing a show that features high school sports might create some talk. Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Depew, JFK, Williamsville NS&W, Amherst and West Seneca all fall into WECK's daytime and nighttime contours. With a host as young as Brad Riter (30 something, I'm guessing) WECK might attract some younger demos.

Tuned in just now and they are up and running as of 12am. Rather uneventful switch...started with a music bumper then the top-of-the hour ID for "Hometown 1230, WECK"...(BTW, my prediction about them using Fox News Radio was on the mark :))
Best of luck to everyone involved with the station...

That's probably because only radio geeks would be clustered around the radio at midnight to hear the killer format change promo/announcement/I.D.

His mugshot isn't on their (new and improved!) website yet, but Williams officially has the 7-9pm slot at GR. Hasn't had much of a chance to build an audience in between Sabres broadcasts, though.

And for someone like me, more interested in football than hockey, Riter could draw my attention by having Bills/NFL-related guests on opposite those last few games on GR. (Of course, since I live south of Olean, I doubt I'll be able to pick it up anyway...)

Great to hear WECK this morning! I was so tired of the sensational sounding news (talk?) on WBEN in the morning. I mean talk about beating stories to death!! It tires the ears and mind.

Tom and Harv are a pleasure to listen to and I am sure many listeners will agree.

The format flip was anticlimatic. The satellite county feed was cut in midsong, some nondescript music played, then a couple of periods of silence due to some technical glitch, then a station ID and FOX News. At 5:30 am, they clipped Fox Sports Radio to start the Donahue and Moore show at 5:30am, I expected a little more fanfare/energy but it was a little exciting to hear the rebirth of this station, especially now that it is back in local hands. Tom and Harv have good chemistry but boy oh boy do they need some content for this show. It seemed Harvey was struggling for things to talk about throughout the morning. At least Tom had news to talk about. Of course it was just rip and read stuff...no reporters, no sound...just internet and newspaper. They need content...what happened to Paul Harvey?

And how do you start a call in show like Tradio when virtually nobody is listening and zero promotion? It was comical listening to nobody calling in. Perhaps a simultcast of WLVL's version should have been considered...maybe with Harvey cohosting with their host for maybe a week or so.

Let he who has never made a programming mistake.....cast the first stone.......

Give these guys a chance.........

Putting together a news-talk radio station to compete with WBEN, WBFO, WNED-AM and even WWKB, can be an overwhelming mission. All of the points made thus far, pro and con, have validity. I too, might have considered simulcasting WLVL's Tradio. There was a lack of actualities in morning drive, but Tom Schuh was used an actuality in the PM drive newscast that I heard.

I was surprised at the number of PSA's that aired (strokes, animal cruelty, etc.) Couldn't WLVL have given their valued clients the option to buy WECK airtime at a special introductory discount? For example, a client whose commercials air on WLVL could have been offered a 30 day run on WECK for an additional 50%. Such an offer would have contributed a few more dollars to Culver's bottom line and would have made WECK sound more robust from a sales perspective.

There's a valid argument to be made that more attention could be given to talking about the possibility of governor Spitzer's resignation and others topical news items such as the parking crunch at Buffalo-Niagara International Airport... which is just down the street from the WECK studios. As a spoof, they might have run an impromptu contest offering a parking space in the station parking lot and transportation to the airport to a lucky winner.

Give the station some time to gell and for the talent and management to get their sea legs, heading and coordinates.

Day Old WECK

I had limited time to listen this morning, but it was good to hear Donahue and Moore back on the air. They sounded like they were having fun while they worked through some real technical issues. It sounded to me like Harv's mic was overdriving the processing, and the little bit of Tradio that I heard indicated that he was breaking up with callers.

Later I heard some spots playing over each other and some other glitches during the syndicated programming. It sounds like things are a long ways from settled on Genesee street, and I'm guessing that they didn't have an unlimited budget to work with.

Despite the techical problems, I think that they have some quality talent to work with, and that things will get better fast. I hope that they have some money to promote the product and make people aware that they exist.

I'd like to hear better imaging on the station that makes more of a statement. The content is fine but the liners don't stand out enough.

I have a couple of programming observations pro and con, but I thought I would give it a few days and make sure I hear all of the dayparts first before commenting.

:)

Dear Tom, Dick and Harvey ...

and Tom, Scott, Brad, 'Bob, Ted, Carol and Alice', 'Dancer, Prancer, Blitzen and Rudolph' ...

After 2 days, you've created exactly what you said you would create and it's sounding good. Sounds like you have ironed out the minor technical glitches nicely, the station sounds like Hometown Radio and it's a welcome change!

I especially enjoyed Scott getting callers today (sounded like he enjoyed it too!) and being able to hear everyone at equal audio levels. The station already sounds like it's always been doing Hometown radio. Nice feel and it's coming across.

Of course, it's easy for us radio board geeks to complain, nitpick and have a comment on everything... and all us programmers here on the board, either real or imagined, probably each have a hundred 'suggestions' on how to 'improve things' but I for one, like what I hear.

You guys sound like you're enjoying yourselves! That is the key to Hometown Radio... real folks on (hosts) and off (listeners) the radio. How long has it been since anyone on the radio actually sounded like they were enjoying themselves and their jobs? Bravo! Nice job!

Where do I begin? We are enjoying ourselves, working through the glitches (which were expected; we're on the air from a studio that's still being built!)

I appreciate that listeners on and off the board seem to get what we're trying to do. There's still an enormous amount of work to do, and I hope you'll all keep listening and commenting.

I agree on the imaging. We wrote and cut up a quick intro package, but the processing needs to be tweaked and more cuts added. It's on the way...

Finally, I want to congratulate our live hosts on an unbelievable job under battle conditions. Thank you Harv, Tom, Scott and Brad.
