WELE 1380 Daytona Beach (Ormond Beach)

I have been told WELE 1380 has a new morning show. I haven't been able to check it out...for their signal has diminished over the years. I used to be able to listen to them in my home (I live in West Volusia) and haven't been able to pick them up in over a year even on my GE Super Radio or Grundig (nor my car radios). What happened to Greg? He was there for a long time! What is the story about that place? How is the new morning show? If you don't want to publish on the board...feel free to email me.

Doesn't surprise me you can't pick them up anymore...I think they have grounding issues and not much money is reinvested in the equipment...everything being ran as cheap as possible. The engineer to the place is the owners son...matter of fact his entire family works at the place http://www.wele1380.com/staff.html.

I don't know what happened to Greg...kind of curious myself...he had worked there for at least ten years.

The guy replacing him is Gary "Columbo" Triolo. In my opinion a hack. Sounds horrible...was out of radio for 40 years and in my opinion should have stayed out! During the past few years after returning to radio he bounced around at a couple of stations (find out more with own words at the link below). But, the owner in my opinion doesn't care how bad this host sounds...because the station is making tons of money selling other parts of the station.

When I first heard that new thing on the air...I swore it was a bad imitation of Tennessee Tuxedo! It actually hurt my ears to listen to him :( Even though ratings don't matter to WELE (they have a gold mine with the Travel Show in the afternoon) this new thing isn't a benefit.

I heard something yesterday...that Greg might be going on WROD to do the morning show!

Since the new WELE morning host aka mister nasal-sound has resorted to playing music on his "program"...I hope the owner (Doug Wilhite) is paying all the licenses fees (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC)...hate to see a repeat of his former Georgia station.

Interesting find about WELE. Searching the FCC database it shows they have a license that expired 2004.

http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/sta_det.pl?Facility_id=72937

Searching elsewhere on the site...a license granted is shown...but not when nor an expiration date. I have never seen that before.

Is WELE operating without a valid license?

I was there when it was wdat..what is killing the station is all those mobile homes..you see am signals travel on the ground and metal will reduce its signsl..try this yourself..put on say wdbo and drive by wele on nova road..see how wdbo signal gets reduced??..anyway its run like a bunch of kids..has absolutly NO ratings..see radio and records check ratings..type in daytona beach..than TRY finding wele..ps THE ORIGINAL welw was 1590..I mean come on a station that has bids on products..a fat jackass like Big John..gimme a break

I had a conversation with the owner last May and he proudly informed me that WELE was going to bring in 3 plus Million dollars for '08. Don't know if he was exaggerating or not...but, when I visited WELE the lobby was crammed with people bringing in cash to buy what they had bid on and the phone was ringing off the hook.

The signal has deteriorated. A few years back, I used to be able to get WELE in my house during the day on my Grundig and GE Super Radio...now I can't and can barely pick them up in the driveway in my cars (I live in West Volusia County).

You would indeed be CORRECT. Not the first time either.

Alan, thanks for the link. Fascinating read. I remember one guy in the lobby at WELE when I visited last May upset with the station and some other grumblings could be heard. The lobby was crammed with people as I made my way in the front door...this one guy looked at me and said, "This place is always screwed up like this." I believe he was making reference to how slow the line was moving. It was a strange visit...the owner's children working the front desk taking money and giving out the items bought on the air...a lot of chaos in a very small space. The owner came in shortly after I did and navigated his way unnoticed past the jammed lobby and didn't seem bothered to the chaos and some grumblings of customers. Twilight Zone kind of experience. Regardless if the billing amount he stated to me is true or not...he has long paid off the property (purchased for $175,000 according to the Central Florida Radio site) and with "family" making up most of the staff and the limited equipment upgrades he is operating on the plus side of the balance sheet.

Looks like the police are involved. Office is closed, but she's still on the air.

Put up $2 million and this puppy is yours.

Rick.Com,

Do you know for sure WELE is on the block for $2 million?

Although I would like to have the WELE license, there's NO WAY I would ever consider paying $2 million to gain it. The towers are falling down and need much repair. The ground radials are probably not much better. In fact, it would most likely be less expensive to simply pull up stakes and move the transmitter site to another location, especially with all the tin from the mobile home park directly behind the station. And, unless Wilhite updated the studio equipment, it's, in my opinion, in shambles, too. It's been over 20-years since I was in the 1380 building on Nova Road, and, if he is using the same equipment now that was there 20-years ago, WELE is using ancient artifacts from the Middle Ages. Most of what was there dates back to the era of Moses...

On the other hand, the license has value - just not $2 million worth considering what will have to be done with it to bring it up to date... I wouldn't go more than $250,000 AS IS...

Thanks for the updated information, Rick.Com...

I have it on good authority that the price is accurate, it includes the real estate.

Thanks for the information. I suspect it will be for sale for a very long time at that price, especially considering the current economic conditions. On the other hand, you never know when a sainted White Knight will come to the rescue and give 'em what he wants...

There is NO WAY they will get $2 million, even with the land included.

THe station has a BAD reputation for one thing and theres no way theyll get even half that!

It's a matter of public record that Wilhite only paid $175k for everything. I'd give him a fair cash price, but not $2 million.

Patrick,

Not all of those folks standing in line at WELE are happy customers. Read on:

http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/wele-radio-station-c72946.html

Closed Investigation
Complaints against WELE radio

Ormond Beach Police have concluded the criminal investigation of several recent reports filed against the WELE radio station. OBPD initiated numerous possible fraud cases after local media reported that the radio station had closed its doors and was no longer responding to complaints of those who were unhappy with their purchases from the station. The complaints focused on citizen’s belief that they were victims of fraud perpetrated by the station management who they felt knowingly sold worthless vacation packages or misrepresented the restrictions on those packages.

Ormond Beach police investigators, after consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, have determined that no criminal charges are warranted in any of the reported cases. For criminal charges to apply, police would have to prove that agents of the radio station knowingly sold packages that were worthless or knowingly misrepresented the packages which resulted in monetary gain to the business. No such proof was found in any of the cases. On the contrary, police determined that the radio station did in fact have business relationships with companies providing vacation accommodations or travel services and had good faith belief that the vacation packages were redeemable as advertised.

While there are still unsatisfied customers with unresolved grievances, police consider those to be civil matters between the station and its customers and not rising to the level of criminal activity. Station management has stated that they are making every effort to resolve the grievance of any of their customers not happy with their purchases.
