WELI - Not Local

Didn't see a topic about this. But I radio on fybush.com that WELI doesn't have a local newsroom anymore and all their news comes from national Fox News Radio. Good thing we got WTIC 1080 for local news, weather, and traffic.

Corporate radio strikes again. We're going to get 'local' New Haven news from Syracuse, NY. Is that rediculous or what?

Great article by Steve Kalb.
I cannot understand why anyone wouldn't find this CC move anything but outrageous. They do deserve to have their licenses pulled. In my opinion

I guess aside from being a decent reporter, which what Mr. Kalb is, he also happens to be a liberal--typical of newsrooms these days--Clear Channel owned or not. I mean this quote sums it up for me about Mr. Kalb:

"By the way, the winner of my previous column’s “Worst of the Year” award was “Faux (Fox) News” for crimes against journalism for its anything but impartial reporting."

EARTH TO KALB, WELI IS A FOX NEWS RADIO AFFILIATE--the only one in CT. I prefer them over CBS and ABC Radio and I'm saying that as I watch Fox News Channel, which has the top five cable programs for news. He is just like all the other whining leftists out there--AFRAID OF SOME COMPETITION TAKING ON THE LIBERAL SLANT OF THE CORPORATE MEDIA!

This like anything else is a business and when a sinking ship is taking on water, abandon it ASAP! I'll bet Kalb had the same professors where he went to school who taught him to belittle capitalism, promote socialism and Marxism and read Utopia as I went through. From his columns Pacifica would work for him if he could withstand the whine of Amy Goodman!

To a leftist like Kalb, it could be worse, Michael Savage could be on WELI. And since when does UCONN Storrs teach broadcast journalism? IT SURE WASN'T OFFERED TO ME TEN YEARS AGO WHEN I WENT THERE NOR IN STAMFORD! But I digress.

To his credit, Kalb mentioned WICC, WCBS, WINS and 'TIC along with WQUN--which has become if I may quote something from WELI's past New Haven's News Haven.

WGCH here in Greenwich is committed to local news despite being owned by a corporate entity in Business Talk Radio. BTR is moving to Stamford, while WGCH moves out of its Dayton Avenue digs for something closer to downtown Greenwich. I am not mentioning WSTC/WNLK as I may have a job with them doing board operations. Went in for an interview and they have a strict policy about talking about radio from within on boards like this.

Why no local news on WELI

Budget cuts ordered by Clear Channel corporate. If Steve Kalb was fired for his political views he's got grounds for a lawsuit.

Now as for our Fox News Channel groupie, let's look at your beloved Liberal Media:

ABC -- only hires right-wing hosts on radio and TV. Owned by Disney.

CBS -- owned by Viacom, whose chairman endorsed Bush for re-election.

CNN -- owned by Time Warner, whose outlets are all pro-government/pro-Bush.

Fox -- only hires right-wing and fascist hosts. Owned by News Corp., whose chairman is an Australian-born fascist.

NBC -- owned by General Electric, military contractor/war profiteer/major Bush supporter.

This topic really got hijacked, didn't it? It's not about political views. It's about what was once the dominant adult local station - "the Sound of New Haven" - now without a local news department and with local talk only in morning drive. Jerry Kristafer's their only remaining New Haven connection now. No, WELI's not 50K, but its signal handily beats any other local AM. Meanwhile, a 1000-watt standards station owned by Quinninpiac University becomes the last outlet in town to offer locally-based coverage.

WELI used to have a total news news hour at 5 p.m. and even local evening talk. They were the source for storm cancellations. Did it have to come down to this? Is it any great loss, or am I just being nostalgic?

I think it's disgrageful. Sure, it was never a WINS or WCBS, or even a WTIC for that matter. But, WELI was New Haven's own news/information station. And now, any "local news" is being fed through SYRACUSE!
Yes, people may say Clear Channel has the right to make money, and I would agree. But, I would also say that the public have the right to a service that will provide them with updated, local information.
It's a good thing we do still have WINS, et. al. They serve New Haven as well as WELI is ever going to now....

Since I wrote the original article and coincidentally I was the one who got the bullet it seemed appropriate I should add some additional thoughts.

#1: I didn't vote "Faux" (Fox) news the worst. Respondents to my column did. I just happen to agree with them.

#2: Competition is always a good thing. Making money is too. Unfortunately some of the latt generation of broadcasters and owners have forgotten that stations are granted a license to serve the public interest. they should also make great money but the "renters" of the license have a public responsibility. CC seems to take a slightly dim view of the need for localism and fulfilling their requirement to serve the public. One hopes there are many license challenges in the near future.

#3: I still find it astounding that a once major market souding radio station with an award winning program lineup and news department has been reduced to virtually nothing because it was unable to make "enough" money. Clearly someone failed to communicate to this latest batch of programmers and salespeople that if you are an advertiser it makes no sense to advertise on a station in New Haven that has virtually the identical satellite delivered programming to one in new york. Sure it may cost more but there are lots more sets of ears available. If I were an advertiser why would I want to advertise on Hanity when just up the dial there is a local guy talking about local stuff that my clients and potential clients might be interested in. That says nothing about the local guy reading the local commercial!

#4: First and foremost I am and always will be a reporter. I've covered everything from plane crashes to executions to heads of state to local mayors charged with having sex with infants and children. From my personal persepctive there is no other way I could have lived what has turned out to be a fairly interesting life. But the most importnat thing, now lost to listeners of WELI and the marketplace in general is the responsibility we have to tell people what they need to know. An anchor in Syracuse has no idea (and no opportunity to cover) a breaking story in the market. When the hurricane hits Connecticut (we're due sooner or later) who is going to tell listeners when the power will come back on? Who is going to tell them wherer to go for safety? Who is going to tell them what the Governor just decided when the news from Syracuse is taped hours earlier. One of the great things of being what we call an instructor at UCONN is I get to teach thoughtful minds how to be good broadcast journalists. The classes are always filled and it is an honor to teach them what I know.

Best Regards,
Steven D. Kalb
