Well, I guess I'm a podcaster now

A few of us went to dinner in my car last night and I had #13 playing on an mp3/FM modulator. When the inevitable "what station is that" question came, I told 'em it was some pirate station I found while scanning the dial. ;D

So what compressor did you end up with for x-mas? I think you mentioned it before, but I can's seem to find the post.

I noticed a bit of volume drop during the CBC piano 'dream sequence'-slow release setting, or something else?
I'm loving the sound. I wonder if you could make money by offering this as a mastering technique.

Great job all around.

TC electronics makes a nice compressor-the C-300. Designed for insert use on soundboards-different instrument settings, but also has a 'composite' setting which works well. I still prefer my 424 though.

Do you ever sell your old compression/processing stuff? I am looking for a unique box, like an audimax.

Well, a former pirate anyway, so I guess you were telling the truth.

I'd like to think the result sounds good enough to sell as a technique. The low level during the dreamy part was intentional, but
I agree that I should have brought the level up manually a bit more there.

The ART Pro VLA uses an opto-isolator to develop a gain control signal, and was supposedly designed with a good deal of input from musicians. The result is smooth compression with little pumping or clumping.

I don't think I've ever sold any equipment at all. I just keep piling up more, and save the old broken stuff to fix later or for parts.

I try to keep all my recordings up to a pretty high level such that clicks and pops can't be any louder than the intended signal.
This alone makes most of the recordings sound better than listening to the original.
Some very garbled files come out sounding 2-3 times better after broadcast with reverb.
I think the reverb decay time does a good job of smoothing "zizzlies" as heard on lower bitrate streams.

WFMU sounds incredible when I run the 128k stream over AM 1620.

Newest batch of vinyl, casette, aircheck added to server last weekend and mixed in.

#14 sounded good runnig live and indeed NEVER hit the red on the CD recorder, but it's too hot at at the modulator.
I did turn it down after a while. A lot less 10 khz whistle this time, much more like an extremely local listener.

I missed my opportunity to record some good open-frequency thunderstorm static yesterday, or you'd have that in the background.

The lightbulb picture is real, it ran three hours on an open filament.

No. 15 is out with music chosen to give the compressor a workout.

Also a few songs where I've worked on audio levels of the files, to see if they're better now.

I have tried a few times but not gotten the any more than 6 or 8 minutes to download.
I can see I got whole file uploaded.
Anyone having this issue?

I have some old WFMU tapes up-after all, what am I doing with these old tapes?

These sound pretty good. I have a nice dbx recording technology series encode/decode box. Thanks eBay.. I had a dbx record deck back then, and sometimes I used it. :

This should sound like an FM station, complete with AM noise. At points you can hear the compression working.

I enjoyed listening to the lower ones on the list, but by mid-week, had gotten too busy in Baton Rouge.
I will certainly enjoy the other ones up the list. Really nice tape results.

I ran across some old tapes of Haitian live "voodoo" singing from the 1950s.
Also uncovered a shelf of 78s and washed off a few of my favorites.

A friend brought over a "new" 2006 45 that I can't say enough good about.

Oh, More music- fewer commercials!

Still genuine AM radio reception.

Nos 20, 21 and 22 recently posted with some new live show music.

I'm slowly pushing the compressor to do more, and I'll think I'll stop about here. I like the sound as it is right here......

Recorded today ( update yesterday now past midnight ) using Breakaway Broadcast Processor and ART VLA 2:00 pm to 3:30 Chicago time.

Now trying 1962 Plymouth tube/transistor AM radio for receiving equipment.
Having some problems with RF pickup when recording direct to the computer from this radio, so output went a bit too hot.
There's some clipping but it is in the recording, not the AM transmission.
Still working on the method for recording from this radio.

Again, this is an aircheck of a Pt 15 station. Sorry that podomatic has cut my 192k file into 96.

A little clearer than the last episode. but still transcribed from 192k down to 96k.
At least there's no clipping in the recording.
The second cut is from the movie "How to stuff a Wild Bikini" , He's the Greatest on Madison Avenue" with Micky Rooney singing.
Two more new-old commercials from another aircheck dug up (1976 ?)

Several new episodes posted within the last two weeks.

No 31 has the best audio, but I'm about fed up with the down-conversion to 96k.
I may break down and pay for the higher level which would hopefully bring back at least 128k.

Well, I'm going to try posting this aircheck on Sendspace, as Pod-O-Matic continues to downgrade files to 96k.
This is 176 MB, two hours of AM 1620, mostly at random with one or two tweaks on the fly.
The recording was just a wee bit hot, but sounds pretty good.
AM radio doesn't have to sound like a bad phone line.

1962 Bendix car tube/transistor radio audio, straight into the computer:

I had kinda given up on this after Pod-O-Matic began downgrading my 128 files to 96.
Recently they gave me a tap on the shoulder, and I discover 128kbps files are back.
I makes a lot of difference to me.

So here is a "new" aircheck of AM 1620 from July 17th of this year.
The beach audio was not present in the original aircheck.
It was mixed in later, in stereo. With headphones it can be a bit disorienting.

The next one will probably be glorious mono.
