Wellington out

Format flip coming?

How much longer until PPMs are the standard in Boston? I can't see the more-conservative (as in not taking as many chances) CBS Radio flipping the station. And with O&A recently renewed for use on WBCN (among other places) I suggest no flip is coming.

Anyway, will T&R be bragging about "running the station" in a few days when this is public?

Would flipping to all talk be that radical a change ? Not that I am for it.
They would need just one or two shows in between O & A and T & R and maybe one show after T & R.

oedipus is not walking thru that door anytime soon....

i could see 'bcn doing sports(p-b-p and talk) at night. they have the pats and could possibly move the bruins from 'bz in the fall. the way t+r have been shoving b's down everyone's throat all winter and spring, you'd think wbcn was the bruins flagship not 'bz. plus, 'bz would love not to have b's pre-emptions on weeknights.

i'd keep music from 9 to 3, though. adam 12 is a fantastic jock.

Wow... we were just talking about him a few days ago in the Congrats T&R post...

Although I disagreed with most of his decisions, he has been proven in other markets. He won't be a free agent for long... wish him the best of luck.

He was also the one who stripped all the personality from WBCN aka the firing of Juanita, Hamilton, Shred, Robby Roadsteamer. It's about time. Goodbye Isiah Thomas.

FYI...Juanita and Hamilton still work at WBCN. Next time check something before you write it.

I don't think Boston ever got a "Free-FM" station two years ago... and I don't think Dan Mason is going to give them one now!

it's difficult to judge Dave's time here at WBCN...I mean WBCN losing both Oedipus and Howard Stern basically at once (I'm not good with timeline stuff, so cut me some slack) and Wellington coming in to take over would be like whatever coach comes in after Belichick and losing Brady at the same time...it's just difficult to succeed when you lose 2 big names like that at a station...I remember listening to his old station out in Vegas and it was and still is one of the best stations in the country.

Shred left on his own accord, wasn't fired.

I wish Dave the best of luck.

I always thought Mark Hamilton was one of the best jocks in Boston along with Adam. I never really cared for Juanita but I think running automation on overnights is a mistake. I wonder how a new GM is going to affect the Toucher and Rich show? I hope they don't send in someone with an axe to grind who is going to screw up this show, I think with a little more time and the ppm change we are going to see a big difference in the ratings. I hope some new GM with his own "favorite" show or whatever won't screw with T and R!

I bet the ZLX PD gets both stations. Seems to be the way these days.

Perhaps Carter Alan could be the guy?

TravisWMLN: I understand your Pats analogy, but not only did Belichick leave, and Brady be injured, he decided to drop Bruschi and Moss, in order to bring in other players. Agreed, he was kind of in a really hard place with Stern and Oedipus leaving, but I think he made things harder for himself completely changing everything about the station minus Adam12 (thank God he kept him, btw...he is Wakefield's finest).

a) Wherever Wellington lands, he'll be fine. The Boston market is just kind of fickle about change (i.e. non-Bostonians/market main-stays hitting the air)
b) They will NOT flip to talk. Luckily for all involved, Dan Mason is a radio guy, not a "guy with a hunch about a niche " like his predecessor.
c) I'm willing to bet the ZLX PD will at the least be offered/pressured to take the position. Definitely alot of dual-PD gigs at CBS nowadays...much better than ClearChannel piping in Seacrest in dayparts now.

well on the sales side, they milked howard's cow for years. howard's audience was huge and it always came from somewhere else. meanwhile, their core rock listenership kept slowly eroding. it became more obvious after howard moved on.

i thought wellington did a nice job with the playlist recently. going more retro but not putting in that lost 45's caliber crap that wfnx or wbos put on. and wbcn has very good music jocks but the station images itself thru talk shows : o&a and t+r. and that's where their issue lies. you can't sell itself as a rock station if both of your drivetimes are built around pesonality talk. it just doesn't work like that.

Some of me actually hopes they go a little bit more talk. I think hardy could put on a hell of an entertaining show if he played less music.

And lets face it there really isnt many true rock stations around anymore anyway. I dont know about anyone else but I could live without the same songs we have heard time and time again over and over again. green day, pearl jam, foo fighters and more green day.

See, I personally say "let someone else go Talk". Why does the city have to lose a heritage station, and flip to a completely unsuccessful "FreeFM-esque" sort of station.

I would love to see the next PD kind of give the station a little rebirth...return the old logo, the old style of imaging (beatmatching? on bcn? cmon.), and keep tweaking the music a little, although in the past few months especially they seemed to have been getting the music somewhat right.

I LOVE O&A...but they aren't the same show that I used to appointment listen to. My "dream ticket" is T&R in mornings. Great lead-in for the rest of the day considering the buzz they are getting now, and they could be live until 10a instead of 9.

I agree with this. Though I like the idea of Hardy doing less of a music show, WBCN flipping to talk just wouldn't sit right.
