WEMP 101.9 FM NEW IS FINALLY ALL-NEWS

As of at least 4:00PM today, 101.9 FM has been doing news non-stop and using the slogan "It's not AM news on FM, it's FM News". Personalities have included have included former WINS anchor Catherine Smith, ABC News's Hiliarie Barsky, reporters like Bob Brown, Ginny Kosola, Kathleen Maloney, and Mike Barker doing traffic and weather. Its keeping the name "101.9 FM New" though. Now that it has officially started what do you guys think?

Probably not fair to judge in the first few hours. They clearly need to get settled into a comfortable routine, right now it sounds like they're struggling.

With that said, the "FM New" (as opposed to News) slogan sounds stupid. And speaking of stupid it sounds like they're talking to children.

I resent this new station. We already have 2 great all-news stations in New York, but FM music formats were already lacking compared to other cities. Now we have even one less. So unnecessary.

And still no web presence!
We are excluded from listening :(

I'll get back to you on that one, Taylor... Let me turn on 101.9 while I have that Chicago aircheck playing on my computer and listen simultaneously...

How can you launch a new prospect like this in Market #1 this day in age with no digital front?

With about $150 million + in Merlin's coffers, you'd think some online streams would be whipped up - you know - like magic...

I live in the same county as ai4i....in Florida....

I'm not in the radio biz, so this is opinyun.....

I do agree that "FM New" is indeed silly.....I'm sure though, it'll b "FM News" very shortly....after all, how long can something be "new"?

That being said, even tho' there are two top notch all-newsers in NYC, they are on AM. I think that the aim of this station (as long as it is serious news 'round the clock) is to try to bump off one or both of the AM's in the ratings. Sure, it'll take a long long time....but, AM is already dying out---that's why some talk and sports stations in the major cities are already moving to FM (or at least duplicating on an HD 2 or 3, not that the ratings are spectacular yet). This 101.9 must be the only all-news FM in the USA, correct?

I've noticed it's a little more 'talking about the news' than 'giving' the news like 1010 WINS.

Who was that famous DJ who, half a century ago, said,
"1010 WINS will be back with more music after the news"?

I've never been able to find confirmation that that particular line was said, but someone else (Scott Fybush?) may know better than I do.

I do know that the last DJ on the air at 1010 WINS on April 18, 1965 was Johnny Holliday, and according to his book the final song played on WINS was "Out in the Street" by the Shangri-La's.

Apparently the station is all news only during certain hours. I tuned in at 9 PM. They were playing music and stopped for traffic reports at the fives. There was one lifestyle report when I listened. There is a web site at http://www.1019fmnew.com/ . They ask for your contact information so they can send you some candy.

I was at a Real Estate meeting last Saturday in Largo, they were hawking a chocolate MLM. The same person was at a Ron LeGrand seminar in Tampa a week before.

Is this a growing trend?

Is 101.9 going to be need the calls WMLM, instead?

I am not fat enough. :)

Not sure if it's cryptic, but as of this hour, the most played song on 101.9 for the last week was Green Day's "Good Riddance".

FM News Had Soft Launch at 6 am Today

AllAccess reports that the soft launch of the news format on WEMP on 101.9 began this morning at 6 AM. They state that though there has not been an official announcement yet from Merlin Media, they have heard from "insiders" that the stunting has ended.
They have now added the final "s" to their name, and are calling themselves FM News.
The content sounds the same as over the past few days-A bit of news, lots of traffic, and plenty of light features and fluff. People looking for serious news coverage are likely to be disappointed. Perhaps more hard news will be added over time, since this is a soft launch.
The website evidently is still only the old one with details of a chocolate giveaway.

Perhaps instead of calling it "FM News" they should call it "FM Giggles" as there are more giggles by the anchors than actual news.

Harkens us back to the days of "Happy Talk" at the original Eyewitness News on WABC TV in the 60's.
