WEMP 101.9 FM NEW IS FINALLY ALL-NEWS

I run a company that advertises on NY radio and, in general, this format is a good one for us.

So I called looking to speak to a sales rep. NO ONE HAS CALLED BACK! THAT SORT OF INTERFERES WITH THE ABILITY TO SELL COMMERCIALS

There must be something in sales training manuals that instructs that a good sales rep will always be banging on the door of someone who likely won't buy rather than returning a call from someone who likely will.

Someone posted earlier that NY is the #1 Market....Nope!

L.A. is the #1 Market. More Ad dollars generated there then the Big Apple!

And just my opinion, but N.Y. has a surprisingly 2nd rate sounding radio dial/market...Has for a long time! Don't quite get that?

Many better sounding radio-markets across the U.S.!

As for 101.9...How do you launch a new radio station in the "2nd" biggest market, with a decidedly third-rate sound & identity? Really???

As of this morning, they've been doing all news and calling themselves "FM News 101.9" It's 11am, and I doubt they would have an 11am newscast if they were still stunting. Yesterday actually wasn't the launch, they still played music. Interesting how this is the launch of a brand new NYC station, yet it's launch was completely silent. No press release, or website, or web stream yet.
Dave Packer and Daniela Bilota have been anchoring this morning.

This is kinda the same way they Launched in Chicago on a Friday afternoon. I haven't listened yet today. I hope they sound better than the clip I'm sure everyone heard of the Chicago Launch were thew newscasters were tripping on their words and the news bed went for almost a minute before any of the newscasters said anything.

I love how the on-air hosts don't even know the name of their own station. Is it "101-9 FM New"? "FM News 101.9"? "FM 101.9 News"? Just "101.9 FM"? Or just "FM News"?

And why are there no pre-recorded liners or sounders? The AM news stations use these extensively to help keep the format sounding tightly executed and fast-paced while giving the anchors a few seconds to breathe between stories. On 101.9, you just get sloppy-sounding stretches of dead air, often with audible breathing, throat-clearing, and coughing (do the hosts not have a mute button on their mics?).

It's amazing to read these posts about how awful this station and the one
in Chicago sound. It's even more amazing that Randy Michaels would allow
it to happen. Isn't he supposed to be a "genius"? I can't listen to either since
no stream exists. He has said "spoken word" is his favorite format. That could
mean many things. Maybe he's trying to do something like FOX News, but without
the pictures? Maybe it's part of an elaborate stunt? He's the only one who really
knows. I also find it strange that some of his "buddies" from Jacor have yet to be
involved with these stations.

It's probably a good thing neither operation is streaming online at this time. Imagine the critique then... As for this mess y'all are hearing in NYC and Chicago, I'm stunned as well. It's not like they took ownership of the stations yesterday. Stunting... soft launch... whatever. Anyone who comes across the stations while they currently sound like a train wreck my never come back. Mind boggling that this coming from Michaels and his team. ???

Are you looking to start a fight? Think what you will, when it comes to broadcasting NYC is far and away the number one market (based on market population size).

http://www.radio-info.com/markets/

I suppose Radio Info is also wrong. NYC is the economic center of this country and has the highest population total of any other city in the United States. As Sinatra sang about NYC; If you can make it here you can make it anywhere!

Say what you will, you can't make up the facts to fit your dreams.

I believe it's time for David to step in between these two looking to start a fight because I'm sure he has the correct answer to the dispute! David the ball is in your court!

Anybody else notice that 101.9's "Entertainment Report" music bed is "The Chicken Dance"? Seriously!

Also it sounds like they've added a slight reverb to the audio.

Not looking to start a fight....Just stating fact!

Radio-Info is a "Forum"....It's rankings are indeed based on Population.

However, Advertisers and Advertising dollars generated are the driving force behind commercial radio Mr. Burns....L.A. is #1, by a comfortable margin!

And FYI....Unrelated to radio....Southern California (Ventura Co. to San Bernardino Co. to Orange County and points in between) encompasses more people than NYC and its surrounding burroughs, with a population of just under 17 million.

I listened to WEMP for about 20 minutes and couldn't take it! Merlin had a chance to land a body blow to WOR and WABC and blew it big time! WINS and WCBS-AM have nothing to worry about!

This might be a worse blunder than JACK-FM! ;D

Now ya got me wanting to hear it....!

(Maybe they are correct in not streaming....I suppose they don't wanna be a laughingstock outside of NYC?)

The on-air flubs and blunders continue to boggle my mind. Earlier in the afternoon, I heard them do a segment about Heather Locklear marrying Jack Wagner, and Paul Cavalconte played a little clip from Jack's song "All I Need", and everything went swell. Then in the evening, I heard another group of hosts on 101.9 try to play that same music clip, but they couldn't get it to work, and the resulting trainwreck came out sounding something like this... Host 1: "Jack was known for something else besides acting..." (long pause) "Let me play this clip..." (long pause) "Can you hear it?" (long pause) "No?" (long pause) Host 2: "Well, maybe next time. Let's just continue with the gossip..."

It's the worst sounding news station in the market. And they really should stream, it's much cheaper for them to stream since they don't have to pay music royalties. Even their stunting was unprofessional. It sounds like they just interviewed random people on the street asking if they love chocolate, and it sounded weird since they edited out the interviewer's voice. One of those segments even had a car honk during the interview, and that wasn't edited out. But I did enjoy the music, traffic reports, and people saying they love chocolate. The traffic reports are the best part of 101.9 FM New(s), but they shouldn't be reporting on accidents on exit 60 of the LIE or exit 7 of the Turnpike or exit 46 off I-95 in Connecticut, the signal is weak in those areas.
