WEMP 101.9 FM NEW IS FINALLY ALL-NEWS

It is clumsy, it sounds like "ninetime" rhymes with "chime time".

WNWS did quite poorly in the New York ratings. It was too national while WINS and WCBS were all about New York. Then as now, live and local always beats syndicated.

Also important to note, in the mid 70s, FM hadn't quite overtaken AM. In 1976, news on FM was an idea way ahead of its time. :)

And sometimes they'll say "FM News 101.9 Time" and forget to say the time! "101 9 FM New" actually had a better ring to it.

I wonder if Mitch Lebe has any old tapes from WNWS...what I remember of it was,
them playing a lot of bumber music going to and from the network.....some joked, they played more music then WABC...You're right what you said about FM VS AM in the 70's>>
I did 7 to 10 on an FM station from late 60's to 70's... people would say who listens to FM..

A press release has been issued for FM News 101.9.
Some excerpts from some of the key players-
Randy Michaels, Merlin C.E.O.: "Now is the time to put spoken word on the band most people use. Our content... will focus on interesting, real-time information."
C.O.O. Walter Sabo: "Spoken word, since the beginning of radio, has consistently been the top billing format in the world... FM News 101.9 is offering a format that's truly one-of-a-kind, and by broadcasting on the FM band, we'll reach a large demographic that's hungry for this type of content."
V.P. of Programming Liz Aiello: "In developing our strategy for FM NEWS 101.9, we really wanted to create a unique environment that presents inspiring, relatable, pleasant and fun content that comes to you just as it would from a friend... That's how our listeners want to share and consume news and information because that's how it actually happens in our daily lives."
The press release also provides the backgrounds of some of the new station's staff members.

The station still doesn't know its own name! The hourly IDs and all the on-air promos for the chocolate giveaway on their web site still say "101-9 FM New", instead of "FM News 101.9".
 
The best I can offer up to hear an example of the old NBC News and Information Service from the 70's is this aircheck from Rick Kelly's Northeast Airchecks of affiliate WEAN 790 Providence. Most of the 'check is local news, but you'll hear segments of the NIS as it was heard on WNWS. There was a lot of bumper music to stations to drop in and out as they needed to for local news.

I liked "101.9 FM New Time", it would have sounded more natural just to say "101.9 FM News Time"

That survey is seriously flawed.

On the New Jersey Board, someone who is either a very big fan of Walter Sabo or Walter Sabo himself kept criticising the programming on WKXW, the station Walter worked at in NJ.

Funny thing is, their hosts reference "New Jersey 101.5" (which is what the station is known as) many times during the day when referring to news, traffic and weather and it comes across for the most part very natural.

"FM News 101 point 9 time is..." sounds like an attempt to copy something that was already done before. I know the frequency is just a coincidence.

Figured we would let an NY'er answer this one, but were we in our favorite city, none of the choices would fit us.
Especially the radio question, these NYC stations are among our Winamp presets: WFUV 1 & 2 & WQXR 1 & Q2.
Of course, we have been around for way too long, but we still LUV chocolate, especially dark and minty!
 
I like 101.9's 2-3 minute traffic and weather reports, they can say a lot more traffic than WCBS's 1 minute traffic and weather report. Especially on a rainy day like today when a lot more people crash their cars and a lot of roads are flooded. There are just so many roads in the NYC metro that it's hard to report every incident.

It's much easier to decide between the Holland and Lincoln tunnels when you hear how many minutes it'll take to get through each, rather than to see how long the red lines (that signify slow traffic) are on your phone, especially while driving. The source of the data is EZpass, which tracks how long it takes for a car to exit the NJ Turnpike and enter the Lincoln/Holland/GWB.

I do find the traffic and weather reports are a bit condescending. "There's an overturned tractor trailer in the Lincoln Tunnel so I implore you to take the Holland Tunnel" "Saturday is going to be a sun-tastic day so go fire up that barbecue or go to the beach"
 
I was in a store in Union, NJ on Monday afternoon and when I walked in they were playing FM News 101.9 over the speakers... for about the first 10 minutes I was there, then I heard someone tuning up the dial (it was an analog tuner) until they landed on, you guessed it... Lite FM.

(This reminds me of a few years ago when some station's new format -- I forget which -- claimed themselves to be a runaway success, based on how many pizza parlors were reported to be playing them on the radio.)

Cabbies will be the first to do that because of signal. The AM's are too noisy while driving in and out of changing enviroments.

The station has not yet promoted itself via TV ads, billboards, etc. The only way that the average listener knows about it is through moving the dial and then check it out to satisfy one's curiosity. I assume that they are waiting to "get their act together" before promoting themselves.

I am not in the radio business, but I can not see how a regular listener to WINS or WCBS-AM will stay with WEMP.
