WEOK and WALL to drop Radio Disney

I just at work today and I found during lunchtime that the True Oldies Channel has just got started. Goodbye "Surfin' Bird" and hello to the oldies. Forget WBPM and Randy Turner, go check out the True Oldies Channel on WEOK and WALL, this will be a great move.

The signal is okay in Kingston and Saugerties area, but it low power at night but you can't hear us. I hope that 1390 AM needs to go up to either 10,000 or 50,000 watts, maybe in Lingston and in the HV listening area can hear us. This station plays a lot of oldies than the one you hear on CBS-FM, because WBPM is a godawful station playing nothing but "Classic Hits" that doesn't seem to fit the format with a 0.9 in the fall book. Thanks to Randy Turner to for screwing this up. If you don't WBPM, try the True Oldies Channel on 1390 AM.

It's true:

Cumulus Broadcasting of Poughkeepsie has announced the launch of the Hudson Valley True Oldies Channel. It can be found at 1340 AM WALL in Orange County and 1390 AM WEOK in Dutchess County.

The channel will primarily broadcast songs from 1964-79, but will also air songs from 1955-63. All Army sports will be broadcast on WALL and WEOK.

The channels recently hosted Radio Disney, but Cumulus Hudson Valley dropped that station.

Won't/Can't happen. 1390 in Syracuse and New Hampshire need protection.

It figures that we read about the flip in the middletown paper before it's in the poughkeepsie urinal. I was listening this am in fishkill, sounds great, and the drop in jingles /legal ID sound like the originating programming. Local folks who like the oldies will tune it IN. Good match for WEOK. Well executed. Can only be a value add for Cume-u-less and Penndell road. I have said for a while that the oldies format is up for grabs in the HV; glad someone took the opportunity to grab the brass ring>>>> Too bad the nighttime signal is so weak.

oldies4ever ;D

"...It figures that we read about the flip in the middletown paper before it's in the poughkeepsie urinal."

Probably because the Poughkeepsie paper's music writer is a regular contributor to--and guest on--a competing station, WDST. He reports and writes about WDST's on-air personalities, and programming, and featured artists, and sponsored-concerts, and other events quite extensively, to the exclusion of all other radio stations that may be listened to by his readers.

True Oldies is a good format. There is a wide variety of music to listen to. That said, it isn't going to change the fortunes of WEOK and WALL has been given up long ago for dead. There will be no resurrection here.

Also, I can't put it into words, but I know others share my opinion when I say you can take the format for a few hours at a time, then you have to come back to the real world.

Although I fully agree, this is the best available option.

I agree, While I love the oldies I don’t want to listen to them all the time. As far as WEOK/ WALL not being resurrected what did they have to loose? They have not shown up at all in the ratings over 10 years. Which is too bad because as far as AM stations go WEOK has one of the best daytime signals in the Hudson Valley. After many years of not listening to 1340 &1390 people are not just going to switch on the AM band to see what is up. The new format needs to be promoted via billboards and newspaper ads. But of course this costs money, something the big groups won’t do for an AM station. Perhaps they could try doing something the free way, advertise TOC on Cumulus Poughkeepsie’s other stations like WCZX. Properly promoted this could work giving WEOK/ WALL a 1 or2 share, which is more than they have now . WKIP was able to pull that much in with standards.
