WEST MICHIGAN AM BCB LOGS

Here are some recent logs from the West Michigan area. I will add to this thread when I catch something new or unusual to keep it timely. Feel welcome to comment in between logs.

I've been having a blast during sunrise skip the last few days, these are all new ones for me:

560 KLZ Denver, CO. - 1100 UTC 9/10/2012 - Poor under dominant WIND with website mention "560thesource.com" (KLZ's website) and partial call letter IDs.

710 WTPR Paris, TN. - 1025 UTC 9/8/2012 - With oldies music and frequent IDs between songs as WENK/WTPR, live local DJ between songs! Dominant signal.

740 KATK Carlsbad, NM. - 1100 UTC 9/6/2012 - Easy listening music then nice TOH ID with call letters, city and "America's Best Music" followed by ABC News.

740 KVOX Fargo, ND. - 1059 UTC 9/9/2012 - TOH ID with "740 The Fan" slogan and FOX Sports, mixing with WVLN (who is usually heard here at this time).

790 KFGO Fargo, ND. - 1100 UTC 9/8/2012 - Good TOH ID and into CBS News over WBBM IBOC.

810 KLVZ Brighton, CO. - 1100 UTC 9/9/2012 - With very weak TOH ID and into religious program.

810 KGO San Francisco, CA. - 1059 UTC 9/10/2012 - Faint but clear and on top of the channel with local weather forecast and legal ID at TOH.

1010 KXXT Tolleson, AZ. - 1100 UTC 9/9/2012 - With local religious programming and interview, Phoenix area churches mentioned with addresses, spots for "familyvaluesradio.net" which directs to KXXT's website. Promo for new show "Arizona At Work" with a couple of nice call letter IDs. Very good signal for about 10 minutes.

1210 WSBI Static, TN. (city name is fitting) - 1059 UTC 9/10/2012 - Spanish language ID at TOH, with city and state, call letters read in English, poor.

1230 KWSN Sioux Falls, SD. - 1059 UTC 9/9/2012 - Poor, with FOX Sports Radio, TOH ID and mention of Sioux Falls and Backyard Broadcasting (owner).

Wow Kilokat, I'm impressed by KGO. They throw one hell of a null this way. I would think you would hear Kansas City instead. That's what I've always heard at sunrise in the Chicago area.

Good work!

RE: 810 - at this time of morning, 810 is usually dominated by WDMP with WHB under them. For whatever reason, neither were present and KGO slipped through the crack. KGO wasn't strong like I've heard KFI/KNX/KNBR during this time, but the IDs were nice and clear. I'm excited with this log to say the least!

I wouldn't expect KGO to be strong, but at least you got it. Good catch!

You're in much more of KGO's null than I am, so that's a great catch.

I never gave a serious effort to hear KGO here in Tampa because I thought the null even here was too great and because of the splatter from WWBA but I should make a more concerted effort now.

I can pretty much null out the splatter of WWBA but the radio is facing more NW than the exact direction of San Francisco but the good thing is that the frequency is not full of other stations like 680 and 740.

Also, I recently heard that KGO is now an all news format, so that may make it stick out more than a talk format.

KGO is an AMAZING catch anywhere E of the Intermountain West! Great work!

I've also heard KVOX/740 Fargo on those great eastern winter nights. 940w sure goes a long ways with only KCBS, CBX and a tentative CFZM in the way!

Great catch! And a very good signal too.

About how long did you have to listen to 740 night after night until you finally got this?

Sometimes I can get KBHB-810 Sturgis, SD around an hr before sunrise, but I don't get that midwest skip like you (kilokat7) and others get. I get KKOH at sunrise on 780, and no WBBM.

Took me a few weeks of monitoring the lower end of the dial to catch it. I've been spending a lot of time between 540 and 950 KHz during my local sunrise each morning looking for Western DX.

Your next shot is KBOI-670. Or did you log it already?

WSCR would have to go off the air before I had any shot at KBOI. In fact, WSCR did go off the air earlier in the year and KBOI ran a DX test with tones, CW, etc. during Chicago's downtime but I couldn't hear it. Unfortunately conditions were auroral that night and favored stations to the south.

New ones heard this morning:

660 CFFR Calgary, AB. - Fair and mostly dominant over KCRO with Canadian news and "6-60 News" slogans, regional weather and into TOH ID.

690 Tentative CBU Vancouver with distinct CBC Radio One music at TOH, but nothing more. I can't really count this since there are several low powered CBC Radio One transmitters on this frequency according to one of my go-to databases.

770 XEIH Fresnillo, Zac., Mexico - WBBM's IBOC was off allowing 770 to be DXed. I caught XEIH here with Mexican music and a call letter ID with slogan "La Única" just before TOH, dominant for about 10 minutes right up to 1100 UTC TOH.

New last night:

1030 KFAY Farmington, AR. - 0035 UTC - Good during brief fade-up with "Newstalk 10-30" slogan and IDs under phase-nulled WBZ.

Not to hijack kilokat7's thread, but I managed KNBR 680 San Francisco, CA yesterday morning shortly after 7:15 with a spot for a local show and a (925) area code. It had a weak signal, but was alone on the frequency. This was heard 1,984 miles away in Coldwater, MI, about 100 miles or so south-southeast of kilo's location and is now my record distance, beating out my 1,890 mile reception of KNX in 2010. Next stop, KCBS or KGO!
