Sorry I can only remember Sabrina Squire reporting and Bob Somers did some engineering Oldiesgal. Not sure if you read this earlier. I did address your WTVR-FM Country question. WTVR was Richmond's #1 Country Music station in the mid-80's. K95 was the up and coming Country Music station and in the process of upgrading their power, challenging WTVR. Roy H. Park (for some unknown reason lolol )dumped the country format on WTVR for what she currently is AC Lite98. Their GM Eddy Anderson once worked for WXGI. Their Morning Man Mike Allen was from North Dakota. Do you remember Evening Drive and Saturday Morning Bluegrass host Scott Powers on WXGI in the mid'80s. How about when WENZ had an Oldies + R&B Oldies format in the mid 80's. WENZ's morning show was the "Get up and Go Show with Louis Power and Jason Edwards". Do you remember them? They are brothers. Jason went over to Q94 '87-88 in their promotions department. He later left to be a key music buyer for Tower Records (worldwide music store chain opened here in Richmond) taking their singles department to #6 in sales in the world!!! I should know... He Ain't Heavy, _______(Hollies)! I was introduced On-Air as Scott Powers by then Morning DJ and Assistant.GM Ron Wayne(Dayle)at WXGI...

I think I remember the week-end WEZS flipped right after WGOE dropped AC for Gospel. The line-up was Bill Bevins, J.T., Sam Church, and Rafferty. Can't remember overnights. This was the first full time AC station since the old WRNL. As for WTVR, what I didn't understand was why they were going jockless from 7PM to 6AM when WKHK was live. And I think they went from country back to easy listening. They brought Dick Grant over from the defunct WQSF and then evolved to Lite 98. Dick Grant left and was replaced by Drew Phinney formerly of the first Oldies 106 . Drew Phinney made it clear while he was on Oldies 106 that he served in Viet Nam and was less than enthusiastic about the first Gulf War. However, when B-103.7 made the brilliant move of putting Bill Bevins in Midday, Bill jumped to Lite 98 and it took off under the direction of Scott Lindy and Reggie Jordan. This what I remember. B-103 still hasn't recovered from years of blundering and ruining a good station with constant tampering.

But then, why is my brain full of this stuff since I never worked in radio.

Wow... You're bringing them back for me too! Yes! Those are some of the DJ's. I was wrong on an earlier post... It was EZ Communications that owned WEZS EZ104... In fact, They preferred to have the EZ as part of their stations call sign. It was Benchmark that bought the station and turned her into B103. Bevins didn't jump to Lite 98. Bill was the PD @B103. I was in the studio with Bill the day he was let go!!![I remember that like it was yesterday...15 years ago] Bill was also doing the lottery draw show and Weekend Wx @Ch6. Later Lite98 picked him up. Bill has been #1 eleven years straight since.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember Bill going to 10AM on B. I also think it was Benchmark who bought WQSF and made it the DUCK, although Keymarket is still using Froggy and other such gimmmicks in Pa. I thought Jacor bought 98 who was then bought out by CC.

Oh, how can I forget you! Smack me and call me squirrelly... I love radio, but I must be suffering from Altzhiemers. Hell, I'm only 48 too! lolol Wasn't Rodney Woody AKA Dave Shannon there to before going over to Magic99. What you wrote on WROVHISTORY.com was a great read... I remember Q94's "Port-a-John Jump" and "The Great James River Raft Race". I didn't know you almost drowned in the damn thing. To this day, I think of them as the area's greatest radio promotional contests. It really set a mark. lol "I didn't know that turkeys couldn't fly"... kinda like that!lolol Good Clean Honest FUN!!! Who came up with those ideas? Also The story about Herman's Hermits on the WROV History site was a nightmare talk about promotionals.lolol
______________

I'm not sure who actually came up with the Portajohn jump idea. But I sure as hell remember the very first idea they had for it...to hang the portajohn from a hot air ballon!! I said "NO F****ING WAY!" Phil Goldman chimes in with "Aw come on Steve. We'll have the resque squad there just in case!"

While the Hermans Hermits story is a great one, the WOLFMAN JACK visit and pics to WROV is one of the best stories and pics on our site at www.wrovhistory.com

One of Pat Garretts pictures of WOLFMAN made it on a cover of Rolling Stone if I remember correctly.
______________

Does the title "McCarthy in the Morning" ring any bells? That's the morning show brought in from who knows where which did send Bill B to middays. And obviously, that one decision continues to reverberate throughout this market even until this day.

Oh, and I don't remember, except for Bill, the first jock line-up on EZ104, but I do remember the first song ever played...."America", by Neil Diamond.

As for the FM98 change.....Park's EZ listening station in New York City was doing big ratings at the time (WPAT-FM), so someone decided it would work in Richmond, too. QSF was doing well considering their signal really didn't cover the entire market (I know because I worked there), so maybe they were thinking they could go over the top with a better signal.

Instead, the gave the country format away to WKHK, who soon after that upgraded from 3kw to 25kw and the rest is history. But, it took several years for the "easy listening" WTVR-FM to finally evolve into the Lite 98 we know today. And that brings us back to "McCarthy in the Morning".

What is this, six degrees of separation?

Benchmark, never owned 103.7. Benchmark (WVGO) bought 96.5 from Keymarket in 1994, if I remember correctly, after Keymarket had already switched it to WDCK, the Duck from WQSF several years earlier.
Benchmark then changed the calls to WLEE and did the greatest hits of the 70's, until both 106.5 WVGO and 96.5 WLEE were sold to ABS in 1996.
The rest is, shall we say....history.

Hello there Guy! You are correct. It was Liberty that owned B103.7. With all of the riggammiroe back then..., and I did apply at both WVGO and B103 around the same time. But I thought there was a big turn around of stations with Benchmark being a key player...actually buying B103 and then spinning her over to someone else...(Would you like Boardwalk or Park Place for your hotels... I hear Marvin Gardens is a real great deal... Would you like to trade?! lol!) Ken Brown, ABS, W-LEE FM. My eyes were always stuck in B&C mag...fates & fortunes, and changing hands. I'm trying to remember if we've ever met. I'm thinking Richmond Broadcasters Hall of Fame Luncheon about 5-6 years ago with Max Gibson. When WLEE FM was On-Air. I was baptized into radio via BIG LEE, Shane and all of you, Good Guys...Harvey Hudson with that White Tower morning coffee. The Freakish Five...even followed Max to WKBW... I loved all of W-LEE...then Q, when they came along...! oh, and you probably worked with Billy Smith in '77 at W-LEE. I'd really love to tag up with him!!! Courtyard by Marriott.....Why Lord...? It just doesn't look right! I have a pic of Bob Mills on the mic '83ish...and other W-LEE nicnaks. Now I know I'm gonna blow you away with this one... Woodman Terrace...Nasselle Lane. OKAY!!!! Time to straighten out all the misinformation that's been going on here.First,WGOE was OLDIES,not A/C,It had switched to Oldies in 1980,and later was the vehicle that gave rise to Steve Leonard and Beach fame(I WORKED THERE,I KNOW),Ragan Henry actually brought WEZS from EZ Comunications in 1987(and changed it to WMXB/B103.7),Benchmark didn't even enter the market until 1991,buying 106.5 from Daytona Group and flipping it from Oldies to AAA.Bill was never an official PD at WEZS/WMBX.He did serve as APD and acting PD on several occasions, but he was never an official full time PD.AND,Bill was NEVER EVER FIRED,HE RESIGNED ON HIS OWN!!!,He told the RTD himself when he made switch that his goal was always to do mornings in his hometown, when that was taken away(when McCarthy was hired and he moved to middays),he decided to make the change. He as smart enough to realize that Lite 98 was a "rocket ship, ready to take off".He made them a SuperNova. One thing I DO know,WMXB would NEVER have fired Bill, under ANY circumstances,I was there when all that was going on (and I don't know who YOU were ("standing in the studio when he was fired")but I know firing Bill is one thing that they would NEVER do,and if you worked there at the time you would know that too.I knew when Bill switched we would take a hit,and we did(Boy! did we take a hit,in the ratings and revenue, with Lite98 reaping all the benefits). They at least knew how valuable Bill was (and STILL is,even more so,now to Lite 98.Having known Bill off and on for many years,.seeing how great a talent he was early on and knowing how hard he worked to get to where is he is now,I feel that he deserves evey allocade, award, and prop he's ever gotten,I can tell you, that guy REALLY did "work his way up".He worked very hard over the years, and really did earn his position in the market.Hats off to you Bill).Benchmark NEVER OWNED WMXB(It tried to buy it but Liberty wouldn't sell).it did own 106.5 WVGO and 96.5 WDCK(later WLEE-FM),and later sold it to Kenny Brown's ABS Broadcasting.SFX Broadcasting brought WMXB in late 1996,then turned around and brought Kenny Brown's ABS stations (95.3 K95,Then alternative WBZU/106.5 The Buzz, which had been moved to the stronger 106.5 signal after ABS brought the old WVGO and blew up the AAA format, and 104.7/Oldies 104.7 (which had been where the Buzz had been, and was preceded by Country The Bear/WKIK,and before that the Old WSVS-FM/Crewe)in 1998 SFX sold off the 104.7 frequency(to comply with FCC regs) to minority owners(it's now the gospel station).a few months later they blew up the Buzz and replaced it with WRCL/Oldies Cool 106.5,During that time,SFX morphed into Capstar, then AMFM,then the combo was broken up in the CC/AMFM Merger.with Cox getting The Planet,B103 (now Mix 103.7) and K95,and CC keeping Cool 106.5,later switching it to Urban as The Beat/WBTJ.Also during that time,Cox purchased Alternative WDYL 101.1 from Radio One and moved it into Morefield and the now vacant WRCL studios.WLEE-FM started as All-70s in 1995,then eventually evolved into Classic Rock and changing calls to WKLR.And Matt started at WHAP in Hopewell in 1977.Ok? everybody straight now?

Ency... hey I posted a correction Liberty/Benchmark ownership of 103.7 FM. The time frame was correct. There may have been a hint of a possible buyout...with no deal. All I could remember was the name Benchmark. As for "B" letting Bill go... YES, I was with Bill, when he told me... "THEY LET HIM GO". The reverberations are still being felt to this day... so much so, Hell, they tried but failed to carboncopy the man in the change over from B103 to Mix 103.7FM. Even taking away the slogan "Most Music Morning". Cox has copyrights on it. As for Bill, I see him practically everyday of the week, and I have the utmost respect for him. I was bouncing back in forth from TV to radio/or both, when Bill almost hired me at B103. That was the day they let him go. Another Dj I felt was done wrong was Hank Matthews... and you've had your wings clipped a few times M.N.! Another one on me. I too, tried getting on at WHAP low and behold... (and the good Lord must be trying to tell me something) not long after the interview with the man. Bruce Cannon commits suicide. Later
______________
