WFLA newscasts

OK, it's bad enough that WFLA-970 AM has effectively slashed the number of its local newscasts in half now -- good luck finding local radio news between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. weekdays, with an even larger blackout window on weekends -- but what's up with Don Richards these days? I haven't heard him on air in about three weeks. Anyone got the scoop? Why do I suspect yet another local radio veteran has been given a "ClearChannel holiday bonus"?

And, as an aside, how much worse can this once-proud station get? When 9 o'clock rolls around and "A.M. Tampa Bay" wraps up for the day, I flip on XM until the next morning. There's nothing on 'FLA anymore that I can't get somewhere else.

Thank God for satellite radio -- which ain't local, but at least it doesn't leave me depressed when I think about how good over-the-air radio used to be around here. It amazes me that 'FLA still ranks so highly in each book.

Rest assured, Don Richards is still with us. Personal illness has kept him from the airwaves recently.

All of us who have worked with or for Don, hope he comes back to work soon. Clear Channel justified the recent cutbacks by saying "research" showed people don't turn to radio for news anymore. The more they cut the news, the less the audience will be able to get their news from radio. I fully expect more cuts in 2008.

This afternoon @ 3 PM... straight Fox news, spot, wfla tv weather...

NOTHING LOCAL @ ALL...

ah... for the old days...

First off... get well wishes to Don. However, I can't help but point out the LONG list of jobs in James' signature. Perfect example of the state of radio amid all the cuts. I was wondering who was running things. Now we know!

Long list, but something I can be proud of. Not many 20 year olds can proudly name a list that I can. Radio is my passion, that's why I drive 53 miles south to do it each time... many people call me crazy - but I love what I do. I'll save my opinion on what's going on around me, but I will say I'm fighting to keep radio alive; and I will, one way or another. Getting others to take chances, is the hard part.

James! Who said you could stop to breathe! Get back to work!

be careful james, with all those titles clear channel might have to let you go because they can't afford the ink to print your business cards.

For those of us who don't want a few big companies deciding what we see, hear, and read in the news, it's a bad day. The Bush-appointed FCC just voted to loosen media ownership rules so media titans like Rupert Murdoch can swallow up more local news outlets. They did this despite a huge public outcry--when the FCC asked for public comments, 99% opposed media consolidation!

The last thing our democracy needs is fewer independent media voices and more corporate control. Congress has the power to reverse this rule change, and you can sign a petition asking your members of Congress to do that. This issue is very important. Please check out the link below:
