WFLZ-WMTX-WFUS Moving Antennas?

I just stumbled upon some construction permits granted in September that say the 3 CC FMs are moving from one Riverview area tower to another. It appears they're moving to the taller tower where WWRM and WPOI are located. With the move, you've got a slight reduction in power for FLZ and MTX and WFUS powering all the way down to 65kw. Looks as though WFUS also has approval for a translator on 89.3 in Pasco. What's this all about?

Imagine if the tower malfunctioned and they all went dark. Guess WSJT's numbers would skyrocket

A new Master antenna will be installed on the ATC tower in Riverview. When finished 88.5, 93.3, 94.9, 100.7, 101.5 & 103.5 will all share the same antenna.

Arent most of those stations currently on the Channel 8 TV tower? That is the huge tower in the Balm antenna farm with the large candleabra on top. I always thought the agreement for CH8 to use the WFLA call sign was contingent on free tower use on CH 8's tower. I think WFLA AM has the FCC rights to the call sign. Anyone else using the call sign has to have the permission of WFLA AM. I read in the Bradenton Herald that WMNF 88.5 is going to be off the air for an extended time frame in order to move to the new tower.

I recently got an e-mail from WMNF 88.5 that they will be on reduced power until mid-January.

WMNF is already on the ATC tower sharing an antenna with 94.9 and 101.5, but they dont have an auxiliary antenna, so WMNF will be operating on a temporary antenna while the old antenna is removed and the new antenna installed. The work has not been scheduled yet, but is hoped to be completed by mid January.

There is nothing showing that WFLZ or WMTX is powering down, yet.

WMTX shares frequency with Y-100 in Miami.

It is showing Ch#62's tower.

They are moving to the American Tower site in Riverview. The candelabra to the south in Riverview.
TV channels 22, 32, 62 & 66, LPTV's 30 & 31, FM's 88.5, 94.9 & 101.5 are on that tower now
LPTV's 18 & 45, FM's 93.3, 100.7 and 103.5 to come

Why?

Any news on this work being completed or in progress? I noticed today that the HD signals for 93.3, 94.9, 100.7, and 103.5 are all currently off air. However, 88.5 and 101.5 are currently on air.

Also on the subject of HD, it's worth noting that as of at least today, two of the Clear Channel stations to the South (WCTQ and WSRZ) are no longer broadcasting on HD-2. Not that many will notice or care. I was just curious if there was any inside information.

The new Master FM antenna is up, as is the new Master FM HD antenna. 88.5, 94.9 and 101.5 are currently broadcasting from the new FM antenna. Clear Channel is in the process of moving equipment to the new site, thats why their HD's are off.

Channel 10 is also moving to this tower from Holiday.

WTSP will probably ask for a COL change, soon.

I'm surprised WTSP was able to move. They are shoehorned in by Jacksonville and Miami both with TV's on Channel 10. It looks like only the religious station CH22 is left up there in the New Port Richey area

Actually, WCFL, actual channel 21, virtual 22 has already located its antenna to Riverview; not sure how long ago, but I'm one of the dozen or so people in the area that doesn't have cable and I've been able to receive channel 22 for at least a year, as well as all the other stations, including WWSB with antenna in Parrish. But if I position my antenna (indoors) to receive an on and off again reception of WTSP, then I can't receive anything else; so I suspected that channel 22 must be somewhere in the Riverview area or at least closer than Holiday and the FCC link shows it's antenna in the Riverview area.

I think you are still thinking analogue. The "10" is a not a real number and the co-channel thinking of yesterday will not apply today.

As I have tried to explain before, the COL's and actual transmitting frequencies are relevant only for FCC coordination, only. We don't even need to see the ID. It just has to be sent through the antenna. If we are seeing the channel on cable it may be a direct feed not affect by the OTA rules.

WTSP will not need to change COL as they will City Grade St. Petersburg. Their PSIP is channel 10, but they also operate on channel 10. Miami is no longer a problem as spacing requirements for digital are different than analog. Channel 10 was already close spaced to Jacksonville, moving to Riverview helps that problem.

Channel 22 (21) has been on the ATC tower for more tham 10 years now.

When everyting is finished, the ATC tower in Riverview will have TV channels 10(10)*, 22(21), 32(19), 62(25) & 66(42), LPTV's 18(18)", 30(28), 31(31), 45(45)* and FM's 88.5, 93.3*, 94.9, 100.7*, 101.5 & 103.5*. Stations marked with * are not currently on the air from the ATC tower. Channel 45 has been on the air but is off now.

Why are so many moving to that tower?
What is the advantage?

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

The advantage is a taller tower.
Many of the stations will lower their ERP.
Lower power = lower operating expense.

It's expensive to move. Is it worth it for a decent ROI? Or is it cheaper to do it, now. In a "bad" economy?
